Volkswagen released photos and details on its new, European Golf GT, which offers an innovative 1.4-liter gas engine boosted by a supercharger, a turbocharger, a steam engine a Waring blender and a set of castinets. Right, just the first two, known as Twincharger. While the optional Twincharger motor will likely get most of the attention, VW wants you to know the standard 2.0 TDI mill is the most powerful diesel engine ever in a Golf. Both engines will produce 170 metric horsepower (around 168hp), but the company only released details on the diesel's performance: zero to 62 in 8.2 seconds top speed of 136 mph and 47.9 mpg. (They had to save some surprises for Frankfurt.)
Also standard is a six-speed manual, with VW's DSG direct-shift gearbox available early next year, along with stability control, traction nanny and 17-inch wheels. The GT will be slotted between the company's Sportline and GTI models, in price and performance.
