Maybe that was the problem... no crumple zone anymore because the car was too reinforced in the front. The car crashed the way 1950s cars crashed... with no give and the person inside the car gets slammed around or gets exposed to higher and lethal g-forces than if the car had crumpled.

Very very sad.

Reading the headline, I got an eerie feeling but hoped it was just a tongue-in-cheek story about V8olvo laying down early. After scrolling through a couple hundred thumb strokes, I got past the Gawker ads that really don't translate to mobile browsing.... read the agonizing story.

I'm tremendously saddened for the driver and the family. I'm also saddened by my assumption that it'll forever change this serious yet slapstick race series, and not in a good way.

Part of the beauty of racing is always, always going to be its danger. You do what you can to make sure you approach your limits as safely and intelligently as possible, but racing is always dangerous.

A lot of the most worthwhile and meaningful things humans do are inherently dangerous, whether it's strapping someone to a rocket and pointing them at the moon, or driving around a track in a Gulf Oil beater 242.

I have a lot of respect for people who choose to do what they love knowing it might kill them some day. That takes a lot more guts and brains than doing something crazy without any recognition for the dangers involved.

Everyone deserves some hedonistic glory. RIP.

Professional auto racing is no fun to watch - whether NASCAR or F1, everyone just jumps in their car, gets in line, and starts driving around the track.

Lemons is the last vestige of the original Targa Florio and Le Mans races of long, long ago. Drivers had wildly differing vehicles, making competition chaotic. Vehicles were made in an era where one could not simply go out to the store; everything was made ad-hoc by a group of expert mechanics, making the cars themselves as interesting as the race.

If there is a heaven, all the great racing drivers of history will be there to welcome him as he flies through the pearly gates in his chariot of turbocharged Sweedish steel.

Reports indicate that he was going much faster than the 75 speed limit, but it was totally unclear how it happened, it was early in the morning, there was little traffic...yeah sure, it was tragic, the guy was only 26, but ever since the entire country has been treating him like a hero, while basically he was violating the law.
Late last year, a big break speeding far above the limit crashed into a VW Polo, coming from the right at a traffic junction. The occupants, a mother and her daughter and two friends were killed and last week the husband of the woman driver committed suicide because he couldn't bear it anymore. I don't think that's exactly right.

Maybe it's because I'm a car nut and couldn't care less about anything soccer that I find the LeMons crash way more tragic than what happened to the soccer player, because he was just going fast on a public road. Fine by me, just don't come whimpering when it all goes to hell. the police believe the crash might even have occurred because he had to evade a slower-moving vehicle.

The Driver however, died pursuing his passion. He could've just stayed at home, occasionally checking Jalopnik for updates on the race and gone on with his life on Monday. But he didn't, he stepped in that Volvo and went for it, and that's why have so much respect for him and all you guys out there. Even makes me wonder once again what I'd like to do with my life...people like this are much more an inspiration to me than any over-sponsored F1 glamourboy.

This brought a tear to my eye, which I've needed after digesting it for 12 hours.

The Altamont death brought back many a painful memory of my own life.

My wife and I used to compete in motorcycle long-distance riding, and by LD, I mean at least 1300 miles in 24 hours. You weren't merely on vacation.

You 'win' bragging rights and a small trophy or plaque. Just like LeMons, you do it 'cause you love it.

Our personal two-up record is 1,626 in 26 hours.

Tough to explain to some how you can go through a set of tires in a weekend, yet weren't on a track.

After we had a particularly nasty bike accident, not LD-ride-related, I knew I had to give it up, not because I couldn't physically do it, though it'd be tough, but because I knew there was a risk of me doubting my gut instinct when my life, and wife's life, depended on soley on what I chose. Hesitate...you die.

I couldn't live knowing I might 'freeze'.

Looking at the post-accident pics, and it doesn't look like a wreck, it was accidental, the hood appears to be in excellent condition, so I can't imagine the impact being the cause of death.

Again, at least he died doing something he had a passion and a love for. He was living life to HIS fullest, not somebody elses. There is no fault with this, period.

This is tragic. I just finished Zanardi's memoirs and after a day of kart racing I come home to find this? It's hard to imagine that such a light-hearted event could bring such a horrible outcome. But we know that racing is a dangerous sport. There is no way to justify the loss of a life on the track. LeMons has, for me, been the epitome of what hoonage should be. Real enthusiasts doing what they love for cheap in an environment designed for the sport. These men and women are out there because they know better than to plow their $500 beaters into pedestrians on public roads. This must be a reminder. Hoonage is always hoonage. Inexcusably, we love it, in part, because it is dangerous. Let's all take that into account and do everything we can to be as safe as possible. LeMons has provided an outlet for the everyman hoon. One of my greatest fears is that one day the New World Order will force us all to drive Camrys and Priuses (Prii?). Let us stand together in the face of oppression and remain organized and safe so that we may continue to enjoy forced induction Swedish beaters and malaise American iron to the fullest extent.

I have been involved in autosports of various degrees for a while now, so I know it CAN happen, but you never think it WILL happen. The LeMons guys have very strict saftey rules to prevent against things like this, but you can't prepare for everything. I was even considering entering the Vegas 24 Hours of Lemons event until recently, so that makes it even more real to me. Heres wishing the best to the family and friends along with all the Jalops.

One more thing: If I go out this way, know I was doing what I loved. Lets hope the departed feels the same.

Rumors were flying fast and furious for a full hour after the crash. We heard at least five but don't know any actual facts.

When Murilee and I left at about 7:00 pm there were several police cars on the track, doing an investigation. Until they say one way or the other, everything is complete and total speculation.

Our teammate Jesse was in fact directly behind the Gulf Volvo when he hit the wall. Obviously, we're all very shaken up, saddened, overly emotional, not thinking straight, etc. But, we're going to be back at the track at 8:00 am.

One more thing -- when the other site said that they were collecting transponders, all that means is that the race is over for the day. The transponders need to recharged for tomorrow.

@ViergangFuchs: Like I said, nobody who was there today is ever going to be quite the same... I can't even imagine how bad it would be if you had it on tape (such as it is).

Find out if they're going to continue tomorrow, if they are, you should go get a couple cans of blue and orange spray paint and make sure every car that's running has Gulf stripes. I know black is traditional but it's just not personal.

Hopefully what happened was he lost consciousness for some non-heart related reason, went into the wall, had some neck/back injury so they decided not to airlift him and he goes in the ambulance, stays at the hospital and makes a full recovery.

Even in that best case scenario it's still not good news.

If he's still alive, may he have a quick and full recovery... well, maybe a few scars with a really good story wouldn't be too bad, but functionally full recovery.

If he has died, well, that just plain sucks. But it's still better than having the same accident and only suffering massive brain damage in the part of the brain that controls motion, leaving him fully conscious but unable to move, speak, or do anything except rot away in a hospital bed for years.

[Note] I do not, in any way, mean to make light of this situation. Whatever happened has very serious implications for both the family of the driver and the future of LeMons, in that order. And if he has passed away (and not from natural causes prior to the accident) I think it's probably safe to say that no one in attendance will ever be quite the same, seeing someone die sort of changes your world view. But during times like this you just have to keep reminding yourself It could ALWAYS have been worse. I must also applaud Jalopnik for being responsible in how they are reporting this, at a time which must also be difficult for them. Through this site, LeMons racing has become close to the heart of many, including this guy away off in Ireland who would never have heard of it otherwise. LeMons epitomises what Jalopnik is about, and what a lot of us are passionate about, which makes the impact of what happened all the more difficult to believe. One would never think something of this gravity could happen in something which we read about every day, usually with a great deal of humour.

I know that the '$500 car' never included safety equipment. But the trouble with low-cost racing, is that there are folks that go cheap on everything. Driver safety comes from combined, compatible systems. Vehicle safety comes from well designed, competently maintained and inspected systems. Racecraft comes from coaching and experience.
Anybody that thinks I don't appreciate the effort some tams went thru are missing my point. It's the ones that think it's easy to build a safe car that hurt themselves and motorsports.

Many of these cars use rollcages designed for $25,000 race cars with razor-sharp handling and powerful engines, not $500 jalopies lucky to reach highway speed at all.

There is, however, one serious flaw with the popular 5-point harness: The inability for the driver to move in his seat. In an ordinary car, if the top or side of the car is collapsed the occupant is able to move away from the impact. However, in a harness, you are held in place as the metal crushes you.

Of course, if you have a rollcage, the chance of your vehicle becoming crushed is close to nil. However, an improperly constructed rollcage - one in which there was not a great big bar across the doors - makes it very dangerous indeed.

While this may be a severe problem in a Golf or CRX, this was a Volvo - Clarkson crashed one into a brick wall with no more damage than a sprained wrist. Although the pictures I have are not the best, there appears to be no damage at all on the driver's side door, making my hypothesis extremely unlikely.

Even without Team V8olvo's comments, the lack of apparent damage to this very safe vehicle lead one to wonder if some race-unrelated cause - perhaps a stroke? - caused the death.

Although tragic I hope this doesnt stop the Lemons. We are just as likely to die crossing the street as the track. Maybe the $500 dollar limit should be on the car and drivetrain and have not on safety equipment. (if that isn't already the case)
Events like this make racing accessible to everyday Joe Schmo and I hope some day I can participate. We all risk our lives by walking out the front door in the morning. I could think of no better way to go than doing something I loved.

The Gulf colors Volvo crashed hard into a wall, apparently with fatal results. A lifeflight helicopter was dispatched but turned away before landing. Police arrived on the scene and began an investigation into the incident. The race has been called off for at least the rest of the day and race organizers have collected the transponder units from the teams.
