]]> <![CDATA[Commenter Of The Day: Wert Returns Edition]]> I love detroit.. spent a year there.. awesome architecture, but, the riots took their toll on the city and it hasn't really ever recovered. The fact the city leverages it's own income tax doesn't help it any.. all the major business moved to the burbs, and the population followed. Still remember the wild packs of dogs that roam the streets south of the bridge.. and the drivers who refuse to acknowledge red lights in that same neighbourhood.

There some awesome food to be had outside of the downtown core, assuming you don't mind ordering it through 12" thick bullet proof glass.

In the late 90's however, there were places in the middle of the day that still just weren't safe. Including businesses with private fenced parking lots.. remember one day walking out a 3:30pm to go home from a job and finding the thunderbird parked right next to me with the windows smashed out and the airbags stolen.

Detroit is the kinda place that reminds you your still alive.. and that life is worth living, just not there.

And yeah, the roads are probably some of the worst on earth considering the usage they get.

But there are many great places downtown to hang out. On a summer night you can walk to a nice bar in Foxtown or Greektown with no worries.

Detroit may have a bad rep, but in truth, it's probably no worse than most any other city its size.

I'll be optimistic and insist that the renaissance refers to GM itself. Although, I could see Detroit being a fantastic city if there was a huge influx of succesful industry.

I've been to the Detroit auto show a few times, and around COBO is okay. A couple of blocks from the casinos is worse (kind of like Atlantic City).

Unfortunately, automakers are having fewer and fewer reveals in Detroit. Even the Detroit automakers. Hell, last year (Jan, 07) Dodge didn't even bring the much-hyped-to-that-point-and-already-rev... Challenger to the show. I didn't go this year, but I assume they had it there this year.
