Where is all the X6-hate is coming from? Of course it's not an M3 in driving dynamics, but let's compare it with what's really on the road today. Other than Audi wagons, most other luxury utes resemble chrome-laden Frigidaires. The X6 is much more interesting and fun. Sure it doesn't have the cargo room that your Land Rover offers. But i can't remember the last time i saw a Land Rover or Escrapalade that was hauling more than three bags of groceries anyway.

Wouldn't you rather see an X6 on the road than the fat XXXL utes?

@Rabbi Dave: Hi dave, while I agree with you about how great the X6 is to drive, you're mistaken about it selling out. As i stated i the article, every vehicle scheduled to depart the factory in 2008 has been sold to a dealer.

I think the post is right about Cayenne buyers flocking to the new hotness X6.

It's wrong about selling out as others have said. We've got 200+ in our national inventory on Cars.com.

I drove it this week at road america. The smaller engine too, and it was AWESOME. Nothing stranger than being that high up and taking the carousel in the X6. Friggin great. And the brakes were magical.

And it is much better looking in person. Plus I got int he back and found it not too cramped. certainly not like the CLS.

FRom the German car magazine Auto Motor und Sport... BMW plans to build 40.000 X6 a year, 20.000 for the USA only... but this still doesn't give the correct amount... The first production year is normally less and also a few months short..

Subaru totally mishandled the upmarket for its customers by only offering them the minivan-like B9 Tribeca. I think this is the market that BMW is trying to reach with the X6.

It looks like a previous generation Legacy Outback sedan on steroids. Fugly yet badass. Twin turbo V8 does a lot for the looks of this thing.

That is exactly what I was thinking.

This vehicle would be merely offensive if it was just an X5 with no cargo area. But since it is a *four seat* X5 with no cargo area, it verges on the profane.

It's bad enough that BMW has been removing the possibility of using the center seating position in their coupes; what kind of slack jawed moron would buy a 4 door, four seat TRUCK?

I mean, can you imagine the conversation where your friends say, hey, let's take that giant freaking truck you bought, and you say, sorry, it only seats four. And I have to stop at the gas station on the way. To everywhere.

So...what we've got here is BMW's attempt at building a Subaru.

Except that you can get a Subaru with a bigger interior, more room in the trunk, a quite frankly glorious sunroof, and the sheer rock-like durability of any Fuji Heavy Industries product.

Yes, the WRX STi looks awful, and is horrible and plasticy on the inside. But when was the last time BMW won a WRC title?

I'm really sick of this beast, no not beast. It just so stupid. My ex-sister-in-law, Satan would drive one. That's how bad it is. I don't think there has ever been a vehicle posted here more that I cared for less. With my financial ineptitude it is not like I can consider buying one. But years from now when I could, I still wouldn't because it is absolutely useless. What is it's redeeming value? Obviously not style. Its like a Cayenne with no hauling capacity.

I just can't figure this out... it (the X6) seems to be an unattractive repackaging of an overpriced quasi-useful BMW X5, which is senseless in light of the 5-Series Touring (wagon). It seems that logic has been turned upside down. Granted, the X6 may have a better drivetrain, but why can't that be migrated to existing BMW body styles.

I'm lost here...

the reason it drives so well is the same reason that the Nissan GT-R does: torque vectoring. Audi, MB and just about every other manufacturer need to get their ass in gear and start putting torque vectoring differentials on their cars. I know Audi has one in development, but it hasn't made it onto any cars yet.

They have one in the baggage claim area of the Greenville Airport, about 5 minutes form the BMW plant. I was waiting for my rental car there recently (not a bimmer) and went to check it out. Front end, good, side profile, not too bad, then I went around to the back and..
