<P>I'm all too familiar with this <I>exact</I> radiator design, replaced one last fall, from the W126 chassis, and that overflow tube coming off the neck of the radiator...that thing is <B>ULTRA</B> fragile. I mean, don't look at it too hard or for too long, fragile.</P>
<P>Because said radiator doesn't have a cap, this is the only way to add coolant to the system.</P>
<P>I hope has the name Nissen, or something besides just the Mercedes star. If that one is OEM, it's already on borrowed time.</P>
<P>You might want to bring a combo of the correctly-sized machine threaded bolt to fit the hole, teflon tape, and JB Weld Qwik to plug it, should it crack.</P>
<P>Alternatively, find an extra rad...or 15 heater cores and a slew of hose.</P> <p>Kelly</p>]]></description>

		    <description><![CDATA[<p>Yep, I'll bet the main issue was airflow through the radiator. Every pusher fan setup I've been around reflects more air off the radiator than goes through it. I notice this same setup has been repeated.</p>
<p>And as for shearing the distributor drive pin, it's likely that the pump sucked up a bit of trash which stopped the pump rotors. Those gerotor pumps are not forgiving of debris. With a SBF the debris is usually hardened valve stem seal bits, although I have seen a few valve cover gasket spacers get sucked up. If you don't find what it was the problem WILL happen again</p> <p>Searcher</p>]]></description>

		    <description><![CDATA[<P>I did the electric water pump thang years and years ago with the Saab from hell, a '75 99 that suffered stripped water pump gears AND a stripped idler shaft (on the early Saab B-engines, it drives the water pump, distributor, oil pump, and on the carb'ed cars, the fuel pump). After way too much thought, a couple rounds of yanking the drivetrain and cursing from my then-not-soon-enough-to-be-ex-wife and a year's worth of the POS sitting next to my garage, the solution was a 12v coolant transfer pump, as used on school buses to move hot coolant to the auxilary heat system in the back of the bus. It worked slick, maybe even too well; getting heat out the vents was challenge after that.</P> <p>PaulE</p>]]></description>

		    <description><![CDATA[<P>The problem with your rear-mounted radiator was likely the fans and shroud: if you swapped that over the the other side (made them pullers instead of pushers) they would be 1)much more efficient, and 2) the shroud wouldn't block off so much of the core.</P>
<P>An electric pump would definitely help with water flow, as the stock pump was never intended to push the coolant that far (both uphill and away.)</P>

		    <description><![CDATA[<p>@<a href="#c5599373">Murilee Martin</a>: I think I know the issue, and yes it's aerodynamics. The design of cooling fans is incredibly sensitive I've learned. Even on the flex-fan blades of a SBC, the shroud is made to cover only a certain amount of the blade in order to maintain airflow. If that overlap is off, the blades can move next to no air through the radiator. Or, possible in your case with the electric fans, the shroud(s) for the front and rear fans cause some huge amounts of air turbulence... guessing the distance between the radiator and fans is the crucial bit here.</p>
<p>My dad was telling me how damn crazy some aspects can get with custom cooling systems a few weekends ago. Many years back he went to a seminar or something, when he was building up the badass '74 Camaro. Going through the same guess-and-hope-it-works stages with a 70s C10 shroud on my '69.</p>
<p>How much did the radiator cost? If by any chance a bigger one is needed for the next race... I've got a huge aluminum one from a last generation Escalade. Just has water spots from an acid wash... 		    <description><![CDATA[<p>@<a href="#c5598527">fiat22turbo</a>: We considered an additional water pump (actually, I wanted to get a SBC pump and rig it up with an electric motor, since I'm all about junkyard parts), but since we don't know <i>exactly</i> why the rear radiator setup wasn't working (and we're out of time for moving-car testing) we had no choice but to go for the setup we knew would- well, should- work (plus our poor alternator was already at capacity- or beyond- with the three electric fans, so we'd have had to make another junkyard run for a 100-amp unit).</p>
<p>Maybe it wasn't working because of cavitation in the lines... or maybe the cooling airflow isn't right at speed due to some kind of aerodynamic weirdness you'd need a wind tunnel to sort out... or maybe something we'd never figure out. Regardless, the car had to be ready to go.</p>
<p>That said, the front radiator setup is pretty well protected; the Volvo front bumper is a monster, we've got the crash bars in front of the radiator, and the front edge of the hood is just hanging there, so it's unlikely to get mashed into the radiator top tank.</p> <p><a href="http://www.murileemartin.com">Murilee Martin</a></p>]]></description>

		    <description><![CDATA[<p>I still don't see why the rear radiator wouldn't work, unless maybe there was an aerodynamic affect that had air pushing against the fans at speed negating the cooling.</p>
<p>You should build a cowl induction hood to cover the radiator.  It would have to have a low spot in the middle for that crazy air intake, but if you did some kind of wild v-shaped cowl induction hood it would look awesome.</p> <p>icntdrv</p>]]></description>

		    <description><![CDATA[<p>Oh, man, though.. that rear mounted radiator setup was a thing of beauty.  If this car survives to do another LeMons, tell your team mates that some random guy on Jalopnik said you should give it another go.  So you have that going for you.</p>
<p>Good job getting it put back together, though.  Sucks to have to pull an engine to do an oil pump swap.  I did mine (on a Ford 390) with a floor jack and some 2x4's, while the car was up on jack stands.  (wiggle that oil pan out!)</p> <p><a href="n/a">dculberson</a></p>]]></description>
