In the 'burbs, I have no problems with them impounding cars. Way too many innocent bystanders around. Anybody who goes drag racing in Narre Warren, Lygon St or Chappel St (all well known and crowded places for hooning) is asking for their car to be impounded.

I'm not into causing injury, but I do love serving revenge in the same cup. I'd follow the cops from work, get the license plates of their family and friends and then "dob them in" for being hoons. Or just copy their license plates and run a bunch of red light / speed cameras. Preferably with somebody mooning from the passenger seat.

@danio3834: I don't know much about the Australian Constitution, but this HAS to be against it.

We have a constitution, but no bill of rights. Also, it wouldn't be the first time our government has done introduced laws that go against our constitution or existing statutes.

One interesting phenomenon is the conflict between the ADRs (Australian Design Rules for cars) and the law. The ADRs say that a vehicle is legal if the speedometer has 10% or less error. However, you can receive a fine and demerit points for going 3km/h over the speed limit in a 110km/h zone.

Now they've even started wearing camo on mountain roads so they can confiscate cars and bikes.

But when the government finds a way to make money off it, it becomes another cynical revenue raiser that's open to abuse. They target the wrong people. Targeting real car enthusiasts in meticulously built and cared for cars but ignoring the kid in the ratty VN Commodore with bald tyres and dodgy wing doing 120 in a 60 zone(I saw this happen in Wollongong). While people like yourself Robert may label the rest of us HOONS.

But what do they care? Their so called road safety campaign is plainly aimed at raising revenue and not driver safety, otherwise we would have better driver training requirements (including teaching better driving attitude) other than learning how to reverse park to pass a driving test.

I believe if some kid wants to do a few skids, Why not set up a place that's could be used 24hrs to do this? It doesn't have to be a supervised event. It's not like an off street drag race, high speed is not involved. There should be designated burnout pads that can be used at the driver's own risk that's free and away from danger that ensures public safety. And then there's no excuse for this sort of behaviour on the street.

But alas if the government gives them that sort of thing, they'll then lose a source of revenue and feel the need to augment that by finding another easy target. Smokers perhaps?

Even our so called motorist advocates group 'NRMA' (similar to AAA) have turned into just another greedy insurance company and are a toothless tiger. This 'hearsay' mechanism is particularly shocking. Basically, you could fall out with some dick and all they've got to do is shop you to the Feds three times for fictional offences and that's your car gone. That's bullshit.

What happens if you overcook it by mistake? I've a little diesel hatchback and it's surprisingly easy to get it to spin its wheels in wet weather or on loose surfaces. You don't need to accelerate excessively; it simply has a lot of torque for its relatively low weight and that's enough to unhook it. In Australia I could be hit with a ticket for pulling away uphill on a wet road.

Well, you probably should. Whenever you turn police work into a for-profit business, the result is never good. You have outcomes ranging all the way from small towns ticketing everyone with out of state plates for going more than 1 MPH over the speed limit all the way up to big city cops enriching themselves in the local drug trade. This is certainly not the sort of practice that should be given legal sanction.
