Actually, even bimodal polymers outgas on drying. If you don't believe me, try laying glass in a closed garage. Just make sure you get a buddy to call 911 when you pass out. Depending on the chemicals involved, this can be a small or large part of the pre-application weight of the two reactants

DoctorNineTenths

It makes alot more sense as a sort of permanent bra, where it's going to do the most good. Hit the rockerpanels and you're good to go.

Look around and you'll find a shop in your area that uses elastomers in a wider range of uses than truckbeds. They'll have colors, different textures, and will be able to spray it much thinner than a bed liner. I fantasized about spraying the interior and underside of my Bug with it.

A few steps from the house I lived at in high school in Montana is this joint:
Can you see it? Of course not. It's clear!

regarding non-traditional paint alternatives, when I was at UVM at the dawn of the 1990s, I used to see a Volvo 164 around town (Burlington, VT) regularly that was entirely covered in blue Astroturf. Done really nicely, too - all of the chrome trim strips, badging, etc had been retained, placed over or cut into the 'turf. Must have added an awful lot of weight, esp in the rain. Can't imagine it did much for the already brickish aerodynamics, either.

dead_elvis

@beercheck: It's a Polyurethane Elastomer that is applied in a two part "epoxy like" fashion, so evaporation will not be a part of making this thing lighter. I have found no information on the weight of Hardline (rhino's bedliner) but you know Polyurethane Elastomers from such films as "that tough rubbery stuff with a sticky back that you use as rubber bumpers for things". I assume that there is a higher level of epoxy type material in this mixture to allow it to be harder. Ok so yeah 300lbs is totally possible and that's a whole lot of weight no matter where it goes (if you are talking racing). Golf ball dimples, by the way, create lift to encourage a longer flight pattern. They also create drag. Both of those things are bad for fast cars. On a Jeep GC from the 90's it won't really make a difference.

A3rd.Zero

And exactly would 200lbs of "paint" affect the car? Its as evenly distributed as it possibly be... so overall no affects on the car? Like having an extra person on board? Would the extra weight of the panels make the spot welds fatigue prematurely? I wonder if its quieter?

been there, done that.

buddy in highschool had a jacked-up 2500 chevy shortbed. bright yellow paint, with gunmetal gray rhino done on all the rockers, panels, and underbody.

he called it the bee, or stinger, or something to that effect. for 4-wheeling in rock country it is fantastic. the rhino takes almost all the abuse and leaves the body panels looking great. easy to clean, and externely durable. he didn't give a rats ass if he scraped on boulders, cause it didn't matter.

great concept if you have a heavily abused exterior, or potentially heavy abuse.

cyanics
