FYI: It is a wrap. The owner can pull off the vinyl at any time and return the car to Ferrari red. The vinyl stick-um does not harm the paint. Thus the owner can play James Dean by day, protect the finish in the supermarket parking lot and still be rich at re-sale time. I won't be so gauche as to post our Web site for more information (my company wraps cars in vinyl, but hasn't done a Ferrari yet!)but it is in my profile.

Comment on Matte Black Ferrari F430 Down On The Geneva Street I liked this at first and didn't know why. A designer by trade, I've have been wracking my brain over the reason... well my reason. The matte, especially with black (as in photos, television, electronics), works to brings the eyes squarely on the center of attention. In this case, no gloss, no glare, no reflection to subdue the lines and accents of what is already a SUPERhotCAR. I don't think your dads cadillac or ur moms subaru quite has the same esteem in matte anything.

From the people i've met at the track, the paint and color of the cars goes a long way to describe the owner. These paint jobs usually signify people that are gearheads, vs the shiny red cars owned by people who see them simply as status symbols.

@Elhigh: That's one of the coolest things about Swiss car culture; you see gear like that parked on the street in almost every city.

Can I ask, why do so many people do somersaults over these matt / satin paint treatments (or vinyl wraps as the case may be)? I personally think they look horrendous.

Incidentally, I think Ferrari has jumped the shark when it comes to the styling of their mid-engined cars. The F355 was the last pretty one, even if they do look a bit home-made when you meet them in person.

I've seen a lot of Ferraris with matte black finish, but not all of them are painted. A lot of owners choose to cover the car in a foil. A quality job will look like the car is painted matte black and it will protect the real paint underneath, yet is totally reversible at any time. I recall seeing a red F430 undergoing the process on Ferrarichat and it was pretty cool - really makes me want to do it to my car.

All of the red showing through at the front makes it look like an Earl Scheib $99 special. I would think that if you had the money for the car, you would have the money to have it painted correctly. Or better yet, pay the factory to do it for you when you order the car.

That being said, I always wanted a robin's egg blue matte finish on a Ferrari. I guess I better get back to work so that I can try to realize the dream.

Reminds me of the summer I spent in Italy. It was 1998, and being 100 years since Enzo Ferrari's birth, a local Ferrari club was doing some sort of meet or tour or something in Verona to commemorate the occasion. (I'm sketchy on the details, but bear with me. I drank a lot that summer, and the memory she ain't what she usta be.)
Anyway what I remember with utter clarity was the sight and sounds of dozens upon dozens of Ferraris, all types and vintages, just tearing down the Corso en masse. The snick-snick-snick of the trannies downshifting and the frantic, gutteral little "zzzzing-r-r-r-r" as the driver blipped the throttle. I still drool a little at the memory.

I love the way the light dances upon it, revealing intricacies to the bodylines all too often hidden by a freaking retina-killing reflection.

I think satin black looks great on hot rods, especially with some nice contrasting orange Von Dutch style striping. And I think satin black is good for hyper-expensive cars also, if they're going to be driven in an urban setting. However, I like to imagine myself piloting a car like this through the horseshoe curves of PCH (that's California Highway 1 - not eternal garage torment) for which I think a high gloss shimmering red paint job is more appropriate.

My first thought was how much I liked the look of the mesh in the big air intakes. Normally, I HATE the look of mesh (like on the current Caddilacs) but I thought the F430 looked weird with those great big gaping holes in the front. huh...it works. And I'm a fan of anyone that has a Ferrari that's not red.

The only reason that this car should be painted flat black is if someone put an Enzo or 599 engine in it in their garage/driveway. Flat black SHOULD say: "I've hot rodded the hell out of this car, but I don't really give a damn about how it looks, just how fast it goes."

The flat balck should be applied with rattle cans too.
