You can buy aftermarket soft tops for Land Rover 109 and 110 station wagons. This is a simple bolt on job since the roof comes right off. There is a 109 in the Portland OR area with one of these soft tops and the effect is similar to a Jeep Wrangler.

@maxforrest32: yes. They were called convertible sedans, to distinguish then from both convertible coupes (2 doors, duhhh) and phaetons, which were 4 door open cars with a folding top but no roll up windows ('37 Ford being the last of those that I can recall, and most makers discontinued them earlier).

Under that definition the VW Thing is technically a phaeton, not a convertible sedan (not to be confused with the VW Phaeton, haha).

All of the convertible sedans were discontinued around 1940-41. Even those makers whose 1946-48 cars were still using the 1940 or '41 body shell did not reintroduce the convertible sedan.

4 seat convertibles? Any country, any era? Like anyone's going to read this deep into the thread...

Mercedes Adenauer, as stated earlier. But there's also the 280SE and 280SE 3.5 Cabriolets from the late 60's to early 70's -- often considered the last hand-made Mercedes-Benz's. Before the Adenauer's were the 220S cabriolets, then the W136 170's before that (one of which is pretty unique -- the 170D OTP, a stripped four cylinder diesel, four seat convertible -- great car, and rare). Before the 170's were all the great pre-war cars, the 320's and some others.

(I hear he's still dead, by the way) I couldn't help but think that the Afrika Korps might have fared better if Rommel had a few of those bad boys instead of Panzers. Montgomery would have been cowed by the sheer awesomeness of the vehicle. Luckily, I'm sure Patton would have saved the day in his Dodge Command Car--basically a 4-door convertible version of the Power Wagon.

I doubt they did it when they were brand new but I have personally seen the doors overlap on a '65 Conti and not secure when trying to close them after having the top down and all four doors opened at once. The guy had to carefully jack up the car from the center line just enough to let the body stretch out and allow the doors to close. And this was a very nice original car. It's just fatigue that comes with time.

The only four door factory convertibles that I can think of that have been sold in the US since 1980 are the Hummer H1 and the new Jeep Wrangler, and both of those are definitely pushing the definition.

The ASC Helios had the most recent potential, since it has the Continental-like slab sides that really make the long convertible look work, it's too bad Chrysler didn't have the balls to take ASC up on it (they could have used the development money that was wasted on the Sebring and Compass).

@graverobber- Same great taste, new low price!: Very few things are cooler than a convertible Suburban with a trunk.

maxforrest32 had the right idea: What about every classic American car from the teens through the 1930's? It would be harder to name a marque that DIDN'T offer a four-door convertible during that time. Often referred to as a touring car (without roll up windows) or a cabriolet (with roll up windows). A small four door touring car was often called a phaeton. A landaulet only has a convertible roof over the rear passengers only, while a brougham was open in the front and enclosed in the back. And lets not forget alll those luscious dual-cowl touring cars...

My '73 Coupe deVille was flexible enough so that, and I tried this once to see how bad it really was, if you parked the RF tire on a normal-height curb, which was in a different ZIP code than the drivers's door, then opened either door, they'd open, but closing them made painful metal-on-metal sounds if you didn't lift them a little right where they latched. They'd close without touching them, but it was a good idea to help them and not just slam the 500 lb. slabs of metal/glass/upholstery.

In the '50s, Mercedes-Benz built the 300--also known as the "Adenauer" because the West German chancellor always rode around in them-- in a four-door "Cabriolet D" configuration. They cost three times as much as a top-of-the-line Caddy, and your obscene amount of money bought you an obscene amount of awesomeness. The 300 had the same running gear as the 300SL Gullwing, which gave impressive performance by '50s standards even in the big, heavy sedan. Incidentally, Mercedes solved the problem of structural rigidity in their typical style: They just made the frame really, really strong.

@maxforrest32: I just know I've read of those flexing issues from several different sources over the years and from other car buffs. But yeah I've never directly heard from a Lincoln owner. I think it would have to be an extremely uneven surface for this to even occur, a situation that the average owner would rarely experience. Could have been a nasty rumor started by Cadillac back in the day.

Peugeot presented the a concept four-door retractable hardtop convertible, the Peugeot 407 Macarena in 2006 -- by French coachbuilding specialist Heuliez, the Macarena's top folded in 60 seconds. The steel reinforcing beam behind the front seats had LCD screens for the rear passengers into the crossmember.

My grandfather had an Auburn Phaeton back in the late 30's/early 40's, which is I believe what the body style(4-door vert)used to be called. It was the exact same color and style as a local gangster(this was Chicago). The gangster's car had bulletproof windows though. He told me he would get pulled over a lot by the cops. I'm not aware of any 4-door convertibles since the 60's at least. I imagine the advent of good air conditioning killed that for the most part.

@Isetta: I've done a lot of research into those unibody Lincolns, and I have never heard of this issue...it couldn't have been that bad, or they wouldn't have made them from '61 through '67 without a massive recall...now if there was rust involved, thats a different story.

The problem with four door convertibles has always been how to achieve body integrity. The Lincoln pictured above when parked on uneven surfaces experienced body flex so extreme that its doors would actually bind to the point of being impossible to open. Not a good thing.

Cadillac designed and engineered a 4 door convertible in the mid-sixties as a response to the the Lincoln but sales of the Lincoln droped off and Ford announed the end of the line in '67 and Cadillac dropped plans to introduce their own 4 dr drop top. A retired GM engineer has the fully functional prototype Caddy and it's awesome.

Another Chrysler entry: 1997 Dual Cowl concept and 1940 Newport Dual Cowl. The Newport was used in a lot of parades and such.

In the 1930's Fisher body built any number of them on GM chassis, Caddys, Buicks and LaSalles in the main. Every once in a while one even pops up on the bay of e, for extraordinary amounts of money.

Comment on Four Door Convertibles? Jeep Touts the 4Dr Wrangler as a 4 door convertible. I know Mercedes had a concept car as a tribute to the 1950s 300 four-door cabriolet. I have always loved the early 1960s lincoln convertibles...something about convert. top, suicide doors, and a car long enough to play volleyball on.
