some people will buy them & track them - good on them, they seem to have been significant optimized for those conditions, within the context of stil being streetable. a lot will end up in climate-controlled garages & in parking lots at car shows & cruise nights - too bad for the cars since they won't get used as intended.

the parts which make it a KR are largely unique for the car & not available elsewhere (Shelby will not sell most of them w/o a VIN & proof of the original parts being damaged/destroyed) so cloning one will be difficult if not impossible, protecting values. the factory backing (& full warranty) on the modifications along with the collectability are worth it to some people.

the car will be a success for Shelby & Ford because of the limited volumes, even if it's not the choice for most of the rest of us.

if I had $700k to spend on a house for instance, I wouldn't buy a 4,000 sq ft mcmansion in the suburbs & would end up in something smaller & modern or giant & old school in downtown Detroit. my choice not being the conventional/right choice doesn't make it wrong, just different.

I wouldn't say that -- double the price of a GT500 (and triple that of a base GT) for....40 horsepower and a special hood? Like someone linked, a GT500 with that $8k supercharger from Roush makes MUCH more sense. (as well as 3.2 million cents)

I'm not a Mustang fan, but I find it hard to dislike anything with this much power.

From one perspective, you can't afford to hate this car. Let's say you're someone like cgates1, and you go around talking about how bad the car is and then one day you have to line up next to one at the track. Is anyone going to listen when you say "He spent $80 on that", or "It's still a Mustang"?

I sure wouldn't want to line up next to this thing.

Still...that Mustang is one pricey pony given what you can find in the aftermarket. But wait, try again to use the words "budget" when explaining to me why the GT500KR makes sense, would you? I only snorted half my diet coke out of my nose.

Yes, it has a proper drag-racing rear end and, unlike the GT-R and Corvette, looks quite good. It has a massive V8 with a bajillion pound-feet of torqe, and rear seats. It's a real old-school muscle car.

And that's a problem.

Even though the Corvette Z06 has a more sophisticated transmission less suitable for drag-racing, a normally aspirated engine, and a much lower pricetag, it will blow past the Mustang in a quarter mile - the hideous styling is the cost of excellent aerodynamics.

And then there's the GT-R. A car that's got all-wheel drive, the same seating configuration, more horsepower, better weight distribution, better handling, and a magazine-measured 0-60 time a FULL SECOND lower. All for $10,000 less.

The Mustang is a budget muscle car for people that want a real V8 without the pricetag of a high-performance vehicle. Trying to turn it into one is futile - it will never be as good as its bespoke competition.

I wonder how much money Ford makes on this rattletrap piece of garbage. It's not even a serious attempt at a car. Did you see what they said about a "revised chassis"? Stiffer springs? I suppose that counts...but come on, guys, for double the money at least pretend to put some effort into it.

The Z06 and the Viper are both so much more credible, which, when you think about, is astonishing.

I work with a kid who has a regular GT500, he is 18, the payments are like $1000 per month, and i think his mommey pays for it, and he pays insurance and gas. Well he got it impounded recently, 165 in a 70, he was racing. Some people shouldn't own faast cars

That's part of the point. You buy this when you have enough money you don't care that you are overpaying, that car X does the same for less, etc. You are buying what you want and its just a toy.

Just see what you get in a new boat for $80k, and put it in perspective as a toy.

It's an overly expensive piece of machinery that can be beat by a cheaper option in any category other than "Most expensive solid-axle mustang edition".

Wanna go faster in a straight? There are options.
Wanna go faster on the corners, too? There are options.
Wanna blow a wad of cash on a car? there are better options.
Wanna have an exotic vehicle worthy of raising your self-esteem and collector worth? There are definitively better options.

It's not that the car is, absolutely, objectively speaking, a bad car, or a lemon. It's just that there's a better value proposition irrespective of what your definition of "value" is.

You're right in pointing out no $80k sports car is all that great of a value proposition, given that you can take a 5-10 year old X, spend 1/3 the purchase price and a have a performance monster.

...but $80k is too much for this, not matter how you slice it.

Aside from what Saleen makes the GT500KR is the pinnacle of Mustangs (and modern muscle cars).

That is until GM unleashes their supercharged LSA Camaro on it.

2008 M3 coupe: ~$60,000
Supercharged to 500hp: ~$10,000
Easily beating the GT500KR in a straight line and molesting it on a track, with a luxurious interior and better build quality: Priceless (or ~$10,000)

Note: C&D has the 400hp Corvette beating the GT500 (not KR) in 0-60, 0-150, and 1/4-mile times, hence the lighter 500hp M3 easliy beating the heavier 540hp Mustang in a straight line, I think.
