I have two and a half of these--one mightily abused 7AFE in the Corolla and one performance-rebuilt 7AGE (16V worked head, 264 cams, GSX-R 750 ITBs with adapter plate) in the MIL's garage. The 4AFE that powered a sedan of my boyhood survived years of abusive neglect at the hands of old folk, only needed one motor mount to keep it attached to the frame (experimentally tested for over a year) and still returned excellent mileage. Hurray for the A engines! They may not be pu**y magnets like the JZ, M, or R series, and they sure as heck get outflowed by the B-series Honda engines, but if it went on one A engine, it'll go on another, and they really do last forever, minus pesky valve seal/piston ring issues.

Piloter

I have great fondness for the little A-block... had an '84 Corolla Sport SR5, which for those not in the know is an AE86 Corolla with a carbureted single cam. Incredibly fun car, and one I miss ever since I sold it. That thing would do everything but go fast, and get 30mpg doing it. Factory 3.90s in the rear didn't hurt, either.

ReverendDexter

I was wondering when this series of toyota engines would get the recognition it deserves!

The last sports variant, a 20 valve 1.6L dohc 4 banger came with individual throttle bodies from the factory. Induction sounds are WONDERFUL when the plenum is ditched and open stacks are utilized. I'm using it in my corolla!

One gentleman from Japan spent $100,000+ transforming his Corolla Levin (ae86) into the "ultimate" street driven corolla and used a similar engine. I say similar cause most of it was built using one off competition parts

Good stuff! the 4AG was good enough for my personal track car, our 24 hours of lemons car, and even the formula atlantic series for many years. Jalopnik, you're making thousands of Filipinos and Puertoricans proud today (funny though, I am neither).

chohdog

One for parts and second really nice one (500 miles on a rebuilt, dual weber carbs, etc) installed in my Lotus Seven clone.

Great motor. The 20 valve versions are even better - drove an MR2 with one - the sound is glorious.

Dave7

Sweet, another EOTD that I've owned. 4A-GE's are a lot of fun, and they returned good mileage back when gas was cheap enough not to care about such things. Fill up the MR2, throw in a pack of smokes, and still get change back from my $10. Good times.

smalleyxb122
