What I like about this car is that it's not a generic looking supercar like many others that showed up in recent years nor is it a retro imaginationless stuff like Ford GT which would have been great if there has never been an original GT40 in the first place (which looks better BTW).

I never liked the original M1. At least not in its civil version. The racing version on the other hand looks fantastic. And this homage looks more like it.

Also looks a bit like Pantera but that may be because a day or so ago I stumbled upon this.

Put in that 5.0 V10 from the M5/6, fine tune it and it's a wrap for the Gallardo. If it weighs in on the light side, it would be virtually identical spec-wise to the Gallardo at a lower price point (not that it would matter much to those who can afford it or those that can only dream of one).

I think it pushes the aesthetic of modern hypercars in a different enough direction to make it stand out as being a BMW. As an M1, however, I feel it falls short of the mark. The M1 was subtle, discreet... like a beige Volvo 240... you'd never notice it unless you were looking for it (or, if like me, you think BMW stopped designing real BMWs in the 1980s).

To get a little nitpicky, I'm not so sure the wheels work, necessarily. It's a personal choice, naturally, but I've never been a fan of chromed wheels... a little too drug-dealery for me.

Also, what's wrong with including retractable headlamps on a modern car? Why have they gone away? Engineers and aerodynamicists will say that they produces too much wind resistance, but honestly, does that really matter? Headlights are for driving at night -- who's doing 340kph in the pitch darkness of the night?! I think they look cool, and I'd have liked to have seen some on this M1 concept.

Nothing I see in this "Homage" is a total dealbreaker for me. The designers had to integrate some modern design elements while maintaining some of the M1's cues (unusual roundel distribution, the wedge shape, and rear-window louvres versus no pop-up headlights or narrow vertical grill "kidneys" these days, gotta feed the engine some air so it needs side vents). This is an interesting resolution of that challange.

As some have noted the M1 was not a spectacular performer, but rather more noteworthy for being BMW's only mid-engine design. I say this design wouldn't look so flat if they hadn't made it so wide. Lovely paint though.

Where I think the design really falls is in the completely overdone section just before the rear wheels and the side profile in all. But then, I think the M1 looks great, but the Turbo concept looks terrible. Maybe when this gets toned down for production, it'll all even out.

Unfortunately, too many key areas are botched--the grille, the side vents, the rear fenders, the rear deck, the taillights, the rear diffuser.
