Ijust found this site, and was really wondering how many of you actually get behind a wheel of any type of race car. I so happen race a 1934 Ford Truck Dwarf Car. On the tracks that I run on are all dirt, which if any of you checked out you may find out is alot different that running on on asphalt. I might suggest that any FOOL that says anything about the way Danica runs or races, has never been on the track before in thier whole born life and maybe really don't know or don't care. All of you that are down on Danica, MAYBE YOU SHOULD TRY IT AT LEAST ONCE,,, Then open up and spill your guts.

Eh. He's just saying that because he knows that he needs to attract more attention to his articles before CBS cans his azz. Well... Who am I to pass judgement on whether he's a good writer or not. But then again his statement is equivalent to me saying, "Doyle is in a JV league as well, because the A-Team would consist of Dan Rather, Tom Brokaw, Barbara Walters, Walter Cronkite, and Peter Jennings."

@manchuia: i totally agree. i think the racing all the racing series's need to go back to the basics and stop focusing on competitions of DRIVERS. dave dispain said something interesting last night concerning the rumors of irl getting a new car. he said something along the lines of opening up the restrictions to allow for innovation in the cars. he also said that the indy 500 nowadays is just another spec car race. when it comes to NASCAR they should stop calling them stock cars. touring cars are stock cars. i miss manufacturer battles. there is too much emphasis on drivers. also, congratulations to ashley force for winning the funny car division in the southern nationals in atlanta. a much better female driver.

How in fuck's sake can you make comments suggesting that crusing a stock car around a goddamn circle is harder than driving an indy car on a road course. I understand the unfortunate fact that Nascar IS america's #1 motorsport, but when it comes to the skill involved in each sport, I think Danica kicks serious ass regardless of the poppycock/rubbish said elsewhere.

There are is a lot of .. weird... assumptions going on in this thread:

1.) NASCAR goes to road an oval tracks, meaning the drivers turn left and right during the season. In the 10 race "playoff" that they have I believe 2 or 3 out of the 10 races are road tracks (depending on the season) so a driver has to do well at both to win a championship.

2.) IRL turns left and right and has a number of road coarses as well

3.) NASCAR cars are built from the ground up race machines and share nothing but a name and a shell painted to look like their road going counter parts.

4.) Someone stated that the best race series would have the most talented drivers drawn to it. NASCAR has IRL, Champ, F1, V8 Super car, and ALMS drivers / champions in it. Those other respective series can't claim the same diversity. As such, NASCAR has the best talent pool.

5.) Juan Pablo Montoya recently made the switch to NASCAR (2 years or so ago) and has admitted that while the courses and cars, in theory, don't seem that difficult in comparison to F1 (where he won races); the length of the races coupled with the frequency (twice the number of races than F1) makes it a very challenging series.

6.) IRL cars are not technologically advanced. That chassis is over 4 years old and in open wheel terms that is ancient. Even NASCAR has more advanced cars than this (even if the engines are pushrod V8s).

I fully understand that some drivers can be considered better drivers than others and that may sway your preference for a particular series over another, but to discount any racing series is just wrong. IRL has it's challenges and Doyel is a douche for completely writing it off, but you guys are no better for doing the same to NASCAR.

I do believe 50 races after being on the top tier teams for the last 3 - 4 seasons is a freaking long time and deserving of SOME criticism. I do believe WRC drivers are the best athletes in the world (try driving the acropolis rally in 100F heat after your power steering goes out, and you still have 3 more stages on before service), and I believe NASCAR is a series I will never really watch, but have to give it the respect it deserves for becoming one of the better leagues in the world.

Champ Car was the real deal. IRL is a lame excuse for it, but with reunification maybe open wheel will be as it was in the 80s/90s in a couple years. But Nascar drivers are talentless hillbilly bozos. Dale E junior spun out an ALMS Corvette on a PACE lap. Whenever Nascrap drives on a real road course the teams all bring in real drivers like Boris Said and Ron Fellows because their oval driving meathands can't shift and turn at the same time.
Seriously, Champ Car drivers- best and most versatile in the US, ALMS tied with them, IRL next best, Atlantics/IndyLights drivers next, then maybe the Nascrap drivers skill rates about 5th. In the US only. Foreign drivers are almost ALL better than the US drivers.

I don't personally find NASCAR that interesting to watch (OK, the 10+ car pileups are pretty cool), and have no interest in the large helping of "soaps for men" that accompanies it, but the drivers are clearly skilled at what they do.

People like to joke about only turning left, but driving any car at the limit for long periods with a pack of other cars takes both skill and guts.

Um, he's not far off. The IRL isn't a premier racing series worldwide (neither is NAPCAR). Robin Miller said it best (before Speed edited his article) when he lamented the next 2 years of watching "ugly, noisy IRL toilets". I'm not saying ChampCar was a better series but it had better circuits in a better car with a lot of innovation (push to pass and option tyres are both implemented/to be implemented in F1). Bottom line is that F1 is the pinacle of motorsports no matter how you cut it, driver salary, tv viewership, race attendance, ticket prices, team budgets. Hopefully Tony Cotman will institute some changes and they'll get rid of those crapwagons.

I missed the boat when we were discussing Pedro de la Rosa's comments on Danica's win, but I would have said what I'm going to say here. Why should this all be such a big deal? The lass is pretty good at what she does, so why the hell don't all these guys leave her alone to do it?

For the record, I think it'd be interesting to see how she'd get on in F1 if someone would give her a drive, although to be honest I think F1 is bollocks. I can't quite find the words to elaborate on this, but the money, the hype, the arrogance and the boredom all contribute. What I'd really like to see is Dancica taking a crack at the WRC. If Michele was tough enough, there's no reason why other women couldn't succeed.

Last year at the Indy 500, they had a couple of 2 seat cars (if I remember right, Canadian Club sponsorship was on one). They actually had them downtown, giving rides, the night before the 500. Anyway, on race day they were also giving various high end ticket holders, etc, some laps... I say let's strap Mr Doyel into the back, let him go sailin' into turn 1 at 220 mph, and when he gets out of the car (once he gets the seat cushion out of the crack of his ass), we'll see what this pee stained scribe has to say about racing....

Not to poke fun at Wert's analytical skills, but racin' ain't exactly in Mr. Doyel's wheelhouse. Although one of CBS's "Expert Columnists" (whatever that means), he is pretty much like every other sports columnist out there today. He just throws out random ideas and tries to inject as much hyperbole as possible to either make himself look smart or generate page views becuase of a controversial opinion. He's a decent writer, but he is prone to the occassional over-reaction or bout of nonsense. But, since he is an "Expert," I guess he figured he was qualified to throw out broad generalizations about gender and racing...

Logically, the most difficult racing league to compete in would be the one that has the best drivers. Assuming the drivers are rational, the best drivers would gravitate towards the league where they get paid the most. I think that means Nascar is the superior league, although I don't follow either sport enough to care.

Junior varsity as compared to what? Formula1, Nascar, DTM, American Le Mans?
Each series requires a different skill set and as has been shown time and time again, drivers from one series that is supposedly superior can't necessarily make the jump and be super competitive in an inferior series.
I think it is popular right now to jump on the "IRL is bush league" bandwagon and that is exactly what this writer did.
Further, I would bet Danica is more talented than F1 drivers who are ONLY there because they bought their way in, a prime example being Pedro de la Rosa himself (or am I the only one that remembers his first few seasons?)
