Only around borders... 401 coming into windsor, qew coming into Ft. Erie. The bigger issue is cruising at 130 (nice middle lane speed anywhere outside the GTA), then coming into a construction zone, limited to 80 (even where workers are not present) and promptly losing your car.

I'm glad this is a relatively recent law. The last time I drove to Toronto, I started matching speed with other cars and maxed out my comfort level at 208kph on the QEW (100 kph limit). I got passed by five cars at that speed. I guess things have calmed down some, speed wise?

I remember a visit from the firehouse at school. We tried to pin them down on a top speed for the fire engine. He didn't want to answer but then said listen we can only go as fast as we can safely stop --about 55 mph. I guess if they were Canadian he would have said abooot 88 kph.

This is the kind of crap that's been happening ever since the introduction of the new street racing law.

The media branded any kind of accident that involved a car going too fast for conditions a street racing crash. So for a while all you heard about was street racing accidents, when in most cases nobody was actually racing (people in Toronto get very scared easily, they were the first in North America to ban dancing a few years back, then they all saw the fast and the furious and got scared of street racing, now they're onto being terrified of gun crime.) So then the politicians made an anti-street racing law which encompasses any driving over 50 km/hour and has prison time, the automatic confiscation of your car, automatic loss of license and a huge fine.

The problem is that everyone routinely drives at 120 on the highway. It's dangerous to do less. This becomes a problem at certain stretches of the 401 (the major cross-province highway) where in a couple of places, without warning the speed limit drops to 60 through a town. The signs are not well posted, the highway does not change in any way (same number of lanes, etc) and are not very visible from the outside lane and the police officers sit there and catch people who didn't notice the sign immediatedly. The passing motorists traditionally would end up paying a huge fine. Now they get absolutely brutalized, and get their car stolen by the OPP.

The truck was cruising along the highway at the normal speed and got busted for street racing. Poor dude probably had no idea he was doing anything wrong and now his life is completely ruined. The government took that man's job, ruined any chance of him working in his field in the future, and then gave him a huge fine to boot.

Shame on Dalton McGuinty. If the other candidates weren't completely deplorable he wouldn't have gotten a single vote. For the second election in a row.

Y'know, as awesome as 112 in a garbage truck would be, anyone stupid enough to be doing 50 over in a 60 zone deserves to have the car impounded. At least in Alberta, 60 means you're in a city. If someone takes a slow turn or runs on to the road or whatever, you'll be in the next down before you can slow down enough to remove them from the forks.

What you have to keep in mind is that the default speed limit for a lot of empty rural canadian roads is 60 kph, so 110-or-so is not uncommon in these settings. Also, in areas like Goderich, speed limits are dropped from 80 to 60 on the edge of town, and cops hang out behind the sign.

Unless he was doing 112 around the Goderich Octagon, in which case, Cudos to the truck driver. I've never managed more than 107 there.

The local news has been putting up articles about how many people have gotten tagged with this new law every week.
Just read a article about a guy from Manitoba and another guy from new york. BOTH in Rental Cars driving down Hwy 401 in Ontario and now BOTH are stuck in the cities they got stopped in because there rental cars are impounded and licence suspended. They get the added bonus of having to continue paying for the rental cars and a hotel room for the week

My buddy bought a new charger and opened it up on the highway on his way home from the dealership. Got caught doing 155km/h in a 100 zone. So with this new Street Racing/Stuntdriving law.. His car was impounded, up to $5000 fine, licence suspended for a week, looses points on his licence, insurance goes up, has to make a court appearance and pay the impounding fees.
