ok, maybe my first response was a bit simplistic. i am continually astounded, however, by the fact that americans have come to regard thought as an inconvenience (i'm supposing that this is a phenomenon exclusive to americans, but i don't really spend enough time out of the country to confirm this.) every new invention that gets reported on almost always has to do with making a task or experience less thought intensive. rarely does it have anything to do with making our lives more efficient, or more satisfying or otherwise measurably better, only with enabling us to go through the day using less of our brains. i'm beginning to wonder if the decline of physical work and increasingly cerebral nature of industry in the US is making people resent being forced to think if they're not being paid. of course, it could just be that we all watch too much tv... in any case, i would like to think in my free time and i'm continually frustrated by all these products that assume i would rather not. beyond just enabling idiocy, i think they're actually encouraging it.
