Well, they were more recent than Andretti. And I would argue Montoya was better than his results. But yeah, it's hard to see too many drivers going over in the near future. Maybe Marco, who would do about as well as his dad.

However, I think part of that is due to the IRL not being very highly regarded overseas. There may not be a Hamilton among them, but the top few Indycar guys are as good as most of the rest of the F1 pack.

I think that at this point, female drivers have proven that they have what it takes to be competitive. Yes, there are strength issues. A.J. But if physical strength and stamina were all that counted in motorsports, F1 would be filled with NFL linemen.

The main problem with F1 is, it might even be more of a good old boys network then NASCAR. But Seriously: Maybe it's a spacial relationship thing. My son could read a map better at age 10 than my wife could. If whatever that wiring difference is, it promotes better spacial relationship reasoning in men, that would also explain why women are pretty strong (relative to their participation numbers) in drag racing, but not that strong (relative to their numbers) in a non-physical motorsport like stock class autocrossing.

So there is certainly enough of a talent pool of women out there that we should see ladies winning open classes, or posting times that would win open classes had they chosen to run there instead of the ladies classes. But it just doesn't happen.

It's inescapable to conclude that it's on the mental side of the sport, but it pays to be careful how you say that...if my wife (5 ladies nat'l championships to her name, btw) were to read that, I'd be sleeping on the couch for a long time to come.

But again, there are women out there who are math wizzes, a traditionally male trait. And women like Shauna Marinus and Rita Wilsey, who *can* and do beat the men in SCCA, but they are exceedingly few and far between. I do think it's in the basic wiring. But it's not an insurmountable barrier, as Danica, Michelle Mouton, and others have proven.

As a similar debate, but kind of off topic, a friend and I once debated how a NCAA championship caliber womens basketball team would fare against a state championship caliber mens high school basketball team. I took the position that the women would wipe the floor with the men, but he took the position that the matchup would be even, with the advantage potentially going to the men. In the end, it was an interesting debate, but we didn't have a whole lot of data to directly compare between the two.

For example, in SCCA autocrossing, women have always been permitted to run in the "open" classes, and many have...but the first to win was in 1996 or so (Shauna Marinus, somebody tell me the year). And since then I think only one more has done it. These are 60 second runs, so endurance isn't it. Stock category cars hardly require strength, so that isn't it. I've theorized it's more "nurture" than "nature", and that little boys are just more naturally directed towards playing with toy cars, bikes, and eventually karts and cars...but I think that's a weak explanation. I've always been puzzled by this.

I dunno, I get that men and women are physiologically different and that has implications on sport performance - but given how well she's overcome the same disadvantages that give her an advantage in the "looking hot in a bikini" competition with regards to IRL... yeah, F1 and IRL require different skill-sets, but Indy Car drivers have performed well in F1 in the past. I think it's asinine to suggest that the leap from winning in IRL to being competitive in F1 is somehow greater than the leap from driving a car at normal, human, only-slightly-illegal speeds to winning in IRL. Which seems to be the leap a few people are making.

But feel free to yell at me to go back to Jezebel if I'm wrong.

2: Most F1 drivers are under 160lbs, you can't tell me that strength is that important. These guys are jockeys. Sure they have strong necks, but as strong as a female boxer's?

3: Despite the fact that F1 weighs the driver with the car, having a lighter driver lets you get the center of gravity down further and gives you more ballast to move around the car to fix handling issues, that's still a huge advantage for someone like Danica.

The gap may be large now, but that's at least partially down to the fact that the training programs are pretty far apart too. Everybody knows how to train effectively for a marathon if you're a man, but there's different conditioning for women, which just hasn't had the dollars put into it in the same way that male-dominated sports has.

Anyways, I think we both agree that despite the physical challenges inherent in F1, a woman with sufficient skill should be able to compete.

I don't see a woman winning in F1 though, the level of competition is just too high and the cars are too insane. The talent level of F1 drivers is miles above the talent level for IRL drivers.

It isn't a physical thing, women can work out and get the brute strength and endurance to be able to withstand a race (and to anyone who said that racing isn't a physical sport, why are the drivers always soaked in sweat after a race?) but due to the fact that there simply isn't enough women racing at the grassroots level of things.

To be a F1 driver, you need to have amazing natural, genetically derived driving skills (about 1 in 30 million), have been racing competitively since about age 5, and then to have progressed through about 10 different racing leagues (in each you should be miles ahead of the rest of the team), and have incredible luck to be able to find the right team. The essential problem at the moment is there just isn't enough people at the moment who are getting their 5 year old girls into racing at the moment. So a lot of the women in racing just don't have the natural skills to progress all the way to F1.

I could see a women as F1 champ, but not in the next fifty years. The only way I could see it happening would be if they coddled the crap out of a female driver and made sure she got a win or two in order to attract media attention.

Women will probably not be able to exceed men in sprinting because men have a slightly higher natural muscle density. However, I wouldn't be surprised to see women starting to win a few marathons as female-physiology training programs come along. Not only does female physiology seem to give an advantage to endurance sports, it would seem to me that women are a lot better at multi-tasking than men, which you would think would help with fuel/tire strategy.
