Speaking as a diver, if the driver took a breath in the car and headed for the surface from 150ft, the air in his lungs would expand, causing him to either explode on the way up or else hit the surface and float away into the clouds. Freedivers take a breath at the surface...air in the lungs compresses on the way down...expands again on the way up. Air only expands to the origional breath.
From the look of the wreck,maybe it's the wreck from Casino Royale, dumped into the lake to make a good story.
Wonder why there's been little attention in the media !

The passenger compartment looks a bit cramped. Maybe the engineers at Austin Martin, just have a different view of what is important? Use the impenetrable cockpit for the V12 engine, f- the driver. We can always get another driver, but these handmade V12's are irreplaceable, irreplaceable!

Didn't they just say there was only one car for this movie shoot, where did the second car that was wrecked come from? Is this car related to the Plymouth Fury in Steven King's Christine?!

If you need another one you can borrow this one, but I would like to pick the driver if you don't mind ;)

@pferde_schwanz: Well, what I said about a person being in a compressed state for a long time assumes that the person was breathing during this time, and the gas they are breathing (air) is compressed too. Didn't think I'd have to mention that part.

My point was the bends won't come into play when its a very fast down and up trip, as it takes some time for your bloodstream to absorb enough nitrogen for it to be an issue, and anyway, you aren't going to have enough nitrogen in one lungful.

And yes, I have heard of some highly trained freedivers going to 150 and more, using weights for rapid descent and whatnot. Also involves a long pre-dive period of hyperventilating, IIRC.

I don't think this guy, (who only had max 3-5 secs of hyperventilating :) had enough prep time to pull it off. Plus he was presumably wearing clothes, shoes and other hindrances to swimming up from 150.

sorry, but it's not. the bends results from gas - primarily nitrogen - buildup beyond the surface capacity of blood vessels. this only occurs when the gas is taken in at higher pressures (at depth) and not released. this is similar to the reason your lungs don't explode when you free-dive.

as for the depth, 150 feet may be in this case implausible, but it is well within the realm of possibility. free-divers can easily reach 150 feet.

Bullshit. I've been down that deep in scuba gear and I say no way. He got out of that car sometime within the first 40 feet or he's not coming back. Depending on your fat content, your body becomes more negatively buoyant the deeper you go.

@pferde_schwanz: Actually, for the bends, it's more a matter of how long you stay down, rather than how deep you go. The bends is caused by the too-quick release of inert gases from the blood after being in a compressed state over time. If you go down fast and come up fast it's not an issue. If you go down and stay down awhile, you have to come up slowly to give those gasses time to work their way out of the bloodstream.

@Fitty7lax: I'm not convinced he got fired. Look at the facts: He's 29, been with Aston Martin for 5 years, is an engineer, and his current (well, used to be) job for Aston Martin is driving the DBS to and from the set of a James Bond film in Italy. He's obviously doing something right to please upper management, and if this is the first car he's totaled for the company, he's fine. Maybe reprimanded, demoted to "only" driving around the Vantage or something.

As my coworker said: "He's young, an engineer for Aston Martin, and he's driving the DBS for James Bond in Italy? What marketing VP was too busy to take on that cushy assignment?"

Sad, so sad. I used to know that road pretty well (stationed nearby in the Army), it inspires heroic (insane) driving. Never put my '65 Malibu in the drink, but i did get it stuck between two buildings in one of the little villages along the lakeshore. Narrow street, pissed-off locals. At least I drove the Chevy away.
