Good God, I remember these things! My great aunts husband passed away. Harvey. Harvey (what other name would be driving this behemoth?) had a swamp green Newport two-door barge with the 440 (why I'll never know as he never drove it above 40mph in his lifetime). When he passed my Dad got the car to sell. For about a week I drove the thing for fun. What a blast, compared to my little '78 Rabbit it was a beast. Always kinda nervous as I couldn't believe the thing would "fit" on the road, and it turned like a aircraft carrier, long and forever. I truly believe the only reason the steering wheel was so big is so that you had something to hang on to in turns, as if that loonnggg bench seat was going to hold you anywhere in a turn...I think the truck could hold like 5 Honda Fits today...

gumbypiz

I mean, it's possible there's a second car just like it (this is Alameda after all) but unlikely. My Aunt Dutch (she's a whole 'nother story) did nearly the same thing in her razor nose 71 T-Bird chasing Uncle James , who was on foot. She went across their backyard, blasted the neighbor's backyard hedge, into the adjacent neighbor's back fence, over their gas meter and hit the the Buick 225 sitting under the car port. He didn't come home for 8 days! I miss her.

GTBruiser

I love the big ole C-bodies.

It reminds me of a time when I was just a youngster and flew a trip with my dad to Piqua, Ohio to see the factory where the new propellers for the King Air he was flying were being made.

The plant manager or someone at the company gave my dad a car exactly like this one (except brown) to drive instead of a rental. Wanting to know exactly what kind of car it was, I repeatedly would ask my father, "What kind of car is this?". He would reply every time with, "Its a Clunker."

Man, do I love big 70's cars. If only it were more affordable to drive them.

danio3834

So that's what I used to drive at my first job. Body shop I used to work for had one of those as a runabout. I nicknamed it the Carrier due to the akwardly flat surfaces on the top of the car, save for the superstructure. You wouldn't believe what you could fit in those things too. Ahh the memories. Ahh the cars of old, where a fender bender meant just that, some wrinkled sheetmetal, big chrome, bench seats and engine compartments that you could camp in.

Froggmann

Put some 12.5" disc brakes and 4-pot calipers on it, stiffen the ride just a bit, throw a set of 8" wide wheels on it... hmmmmmm.... Low pressure turbo?
