A $3 gallon of gasoline is 3.79 liters, with energy of 130 MegaJoules, which is 36 kiloWatt hours. At 12¢ a kWh, the same amount of energy from the electric company would cost you $4.32. So gasoline energy is cheaper.

But the key to an electric car is that it's far more efficient than blowing fuel up to make heat and a little forward motion. Battery charging is 90% efficient, electric motors are 90% efficient, so over 80% of the electricity you buy makes your electric car move. From the Jalopnik plug-in hybrid heater post a few days ago, only 25% of the gasoline's energy moves your car. Regenerative braking also makes the electric car more efficient, though the weight of its batteries hurts. I think that's why every legitimate analysis of electric vehicles I've seen shows them costing much less per mile, and why it sometimes gets translated into silly 100+ mpg! numbers.

Well it looks nice, and the performance is awesome. Toy cars like this don't get driven cross country, so the fillup time isn't bad since putting a 220v plug in the garage isn't a stretch, the circuit breaker box is usually there anyhow.

When I was in high school I couldn't understand why all the kids drove 94-98 mustang GT's other than that they sounded pretty nice with flowmasters. My '84 vette with straight pipes put em all to shame though. It was only a mid 14 second car back then, but races with those mustangs were over before they started. On about a weekly basis I would spank one of them in some late night street races we set up.

It was pretty sad that my friends LT1 T/A and my '84 Corvette were two of the quickest cars at school, because they were slow.

Why a Stang again? Maybe its because the log of steel holding the rear tires to the car can handle the immense torque this thing will generate. Why not a pickup? ALA typhoon/syclone? Cheaper than the stang, and plenty of room for batteries, and then there will be a nicely balanced vehicle, solid rear axle, with HD parts to choose from.

and it would prob be a few grand cheaper.

All this chicken little talk about the future of energy, and I still think it's something as simple as each household having one electric and one diesel. If I can stick with the un-PC image of the traditional family, dad takes the electric to work every day, while mom shuttles the kids around in the diesel (which is also used for long road trips). The vehicle usage mix can be modified based on energy price and personal needs. This could also create some excellent competitive pressures for the power company to lower/structure rates to appeal to electric drivers, as well as for employers to offer free charging as a benefit.

@Ashinine78: Add that option, and I'd buy one. Because really, with my 3 minute commute, I don't need long range, and the vast majority of the highway driving I do is about 3 hours, round trip.

I wonder, though, considering how trucking high my Hydro bill is, would the cost savings in gasoline just be translated to cost increases in your household electrical bill?

It's no worse to have an electric motor than it was to have a craptacular straight six in the original. I don't care if they design them to run on electricity, compressed air or cattle farts. All the more likely that we'll still have bad-ass 'stangs to drive when the oil gets too expensive.

I like everything about it except the Mustang platform.

I guess it's easiest to use an existing car, but it needs to be something that isn't known for that awesome "rumble".

I'd reccomend the boxter as the donor platform. Good handling but nobody expects this kind of speed, and I hate the the boxer engine's sound.

I am outraged. I would never own a 'Stang (I don't have a mullet), but I know that they need V8s. That is how it should be.

I can see how a car like the Tesla would appeal to a lot of commuters. Small, handles well, fast, and just charge it up overnight and you're ready for your commute. I just don't see people being interested in an $80k mustang. Except maybe at Barret-Jackson, but they overpay for everything there.

I love the idea of this, especially with a 4 second 0-60 time and a range good enough for most daily driving requirements, but...there had to be a but...$80,000 - $125,000. I'm not paying that for a Mustang, I don't care how fast it is. Actually, I'll just buy a regular Mustang for $25,000 and use the $55,000 I save to pay for all the gas.
