I've been in motorcycle accidents and they are not fun, they never have a happy ending so my best wishes to him. If you've never been in even a minor one, imagine not paying the mafia for a gambling debt and that's about the same thing that happens to you during a motorcycle accident.
Just getting through one without having to say "Rosebud" is an accomplishment. Also if it happens, pressure the doctor for prescription pain killers, don't let him tell you to take three ibuporphin, that's a load of crap when you have broken bones. Also if you get a dislocated shoulder like I did, make sure the person putting it back has done it before. The person I got did it and it didn't hurt at all.

Thanks for all the kind words guys. They just let me out of hospital after recovering from surgery. I'm not sure what all got smashed, but they replaced most of my left forearm with titanium. I won't be riding or driving for a while, but I'll get back to posting next week. pics soon!

I stick to 4 wheels, not because of the additional wheels, but the cage of metal/glass/'glass surrounding me. I'm pretty sure I wouldn't be able to say I've never broken a bone in my body if I had ever owned a bike. I still want one badly, but my cousin was killed on one and I can't get over it. And I see how other drivers treat riders on the road :(

@Pope Dearthair the Awesometh: That's all well and good, but I'm really not up for the type of 'nationalized' medicine they've got in the UK where if it costs more than L35k per year the drug isn't even allowed in the country. i.e. even if you've got the money to pay, you can't get it without leaving and going to... the US.

Yup seriously.

Granted, that's a lot of scratch for some medicine, but it's better than dying, in my opinion. Don't get started on how much drugs cost either - I'm doing a contract stint at a pharma company. Roughly 1 in a million possibilities turns out to be a viable drug, and it costs approx $1.2 billion to bring a new drug to market. The research and red paper ain't cheap.

Up here, they recently decided there would be a service charge for your ambulance ride, because there were too many people getting stupidly drunk then relying on the ambulance to get them to someplace safe. It very briefly almost started a revolution, and it was all over a $75 service fee.

Why, oh why, don't you people stand up and demand health care? Good lord, you started killing Brits because they taxed your tea! (Or something. I have a degree in History, just not your History.) Oh, that's right, it's because the Republicans and Fox News have branded it "Socialized", to make it sound bad. Someone needs to re-brand it as "Normalized", since it's what the rest of the world has.

I'm reasonably confident Wes will be just fine; I know your doctors are excellent. I just hope he isn't screwed for life financially.

@Pope Dearthair the Awesometh: I have a friend that has mortgaged his paid-off home twice (2 mortgages) to pay off hospital bills. He wasn't on a motorcycle and he was self-paying insurance at around $1000 a month for his family when he got hurt.

And then he got MRSA while he was in the hospital and was out of work another 6 months. He was insured and he's near losing his home for the damn bills.

That should give you a baseline for our state of health care.

Same thing happens to smokers. I don't smoke, but as long as they are doing it away from me I don't see the need to tell them they really need to quit. We all take our chances on something in order to enjoy the things we do in life.

Most people seem to think that the risky things they do are logical and the risky things other people do are stupid. It's really short sighted and annoying.

So far all of my bike crashes have been the off-road variety. While almost none of them were fun, I managed to always come out with the same bone-count. So far the only time my road bike went down was off it's side-stand in an embarrassing gas station incident and in my driveway in an even more embarrassing u-turn attempt on my first street bike..

You can get hurt doing anything. You can fall off your ladder cleaning eves troughs.

Nothing pisses me off more than going to the hospital and having some nurse or doctor say "you need to stop riding those death machines" and then turn around and tell a horseback rider or skier they'll be back out and doing their thing in no time.

It's a double standard I tell ya.

He was on the way to trade it in and get an Explorer (can't talk him out of it), when he lost control in the rain (tires were bald) and hit a tree backwards at 60...
His jewish side (for real, he is actually Jewish... and I am for the jokes) kicked in when I spoke to him on Sunday... He said he was happy because he was going to get $6200 from the dealer for the trade in, but is now going to get $8100 from insurance, so he can put more towards the Explorer and lower his monthly payment... he said stop laughing because it was making him laugh, which actually was making him cry...

He was probably out there letting it all hang out trying to get the stench of "family car" off himself.

My best crash was out on the trails when I was still young enough to heal. I high sided my XR at about 40 and got flung to the ground.

For those that may not know, high siding is when you are leaned over taking a curve or corner then the tires catch excessive traction and flip you over the "high side" of the bike. Most of the force drives you straight into the ground. Not a lot of sliding about generally. Sort of like a trebuchet into the earth.

It's not the fall that hurts, it's the sudden stop.

So I'm riding the 15 miles of trails or so back to camp and every time I hit a bump or move wrong there's a blinding pain in my shoulder.

Ah put a little ice on it, drink some beer, you'll be okay nancy boy. I finish off the rest of the night partying at the camp site and at one point even go get 2 x 5 gallon containers of water because it's my turn.

I had to crawl out of my tent the next morning using my one good arm. My left was immobile and in searing pain. The kind that makes your ears ring. I waited about 90 minutes for someone else to wake up and take me to the hospital.

I had fractured my clavicle and 5 ribs. Kind of ruined the bike trip so we had to take our '67 2WD Chevy C-10 four-wheeling instead (standard w/no power steering natch). But that's another story.

I did that to my shoulder on the 4th of July, on a pedal bike... Went to leave one party to head to another (riding a bike was safer than driving drunk, yes alcohol was of course involved)... I went to do the whole "wheelie-start" to leave, twisted the bars at the top of the wheelie and never twisted them back... put them down, flipped over and heard my shoulder go CRUNCH, and then the back came over and hit me in the head... not good times, bad times...
Was back at work within a week and a half as a bartender... on the slow bar in the back of the club of course, but i was working...
