@@kfdave: I'm only 20 years old and i REALLY love 1970's cars before they went small due to the emissions control standerds in the U.S. I know all about the old caddy's and Lincolns but, my most above favorite car is a 1975-76 Caprice b4 they went to the boxy ones, although i do also like the box ones. But anyway, This Eldorado is way better than todays eldorado and i think Cadillac and Lincoln should go back to making these big beasts(or boats). Especially since they have the technology for the engines to be fuel efficiant than it was back in the 70's. Today's cars are not like this anymore because all it is today is cheap fiber stuff that makes the car look like a car but, really is not a car. Altough, Lincoln with todays Town Cars and other Ford Body-on-frame cars that are still being built today by the ford company still have that original 1970's thing to it. And one thing 2 words; SUPER FLY. Check out the movie with the customized Eldorado in it, in fact i'll post it on this website!

MercMarauder

I had a '71 Caddy Fleetwood 75 factory limo that i drove for five years. Big, smooth, fast sumbitch. Called it the Bluesmobile. 472. Great engine, but mine never ran right. Went through starters and batteries like nobody's business. Utah winters killed the starter, yeah I replaced the alternator and regulator. Seated nine with the jumpseats, hauled band equipment and looked great at gigs. That Caddy big block got up and shit when you buried your foot in the Quadrajet. Had a rear-end that is identical to a Chevy one-ton, but not full-floating. Hated/loved that car. Three miles of decaying wiring, and yards of vacuum line was a nightmare. Still, old Caddies are a serious danger to me.

CptSevere

@kfdave:

There really is nothing like piloting a big old landyacht. My Fleetwood is a good 2+ feet shorter than your Continental, but at 18.75ft, no one's going to mistake it for a Civic.

I love being able to stretch my legs out and sprawl on the big bench seat like a living room couch. The near-chair height seats, pillow soft ride (a huge plus in Pennsylvania, with our notoriously pot holed and pockmarked roads), and the overassisted steering makes the 2.5 ton behemoth as easy to maneuver as a Miata.

I recently had the opportunity to drive by brother's 2003 3-Series- man, what a difference. Steering wheel mashed down into my lap, knees almost touching the dashboard, climbing up out of the car rather than just stepping out, etc.

I never really understood when old people complained about cars being hard to get in/out of, but after living with the Cadillac so long, I get it. I'm only 22, but spending some time in the discomfort of the BMW made me feel embarrassingly old.

Big cars really are just more comfortable to drive and live with on a daily basis, maybe not as fun, but with stop and go traffic, bad roads, and congestion, you can't really enjoy a fun car anyway. Might as well just be comfortable.

ranwhenparked

OK Elwood, let me try to put this in perspective.I live in the Sierra, there's nothing more fun than slinging a sports (or even just sporty) car down my local roads. On the other hand,my '79 Continental is just an absolute joy to drive for completely different reasons.21 feet of of good ol' 'merican excess, slide into that leather, fire up that big old V-8 (as opposed to that anemic Corolla I usually drive) and head that 5000 pound behemoth down the road down the road with one finger on the steering wheel.Pop in an 8-track and cruise, trust me,these things are fun to drive, just in a different way.

I owned a '73 Coupe deVille for a few years in the early-90's. This was the 472 engine.

I still miss that car. It was quite literally like driving your living room. The steering wheel was kinda connected to directional control. The pedals were similarly connected to moving and stopping. It was an awesome long-distance machine, and could seat 7 in relative comfort. Was about an inch longer than a Suburblan, IIRC.

Still, even though I have a '89 420 SEL, which is the European equivalent to such a land yacht, even though it's much more capable, the Caddy has a spot in my heart. I don't like the thought of filling a 27 gallon gasoline tank, weekly, getting all of 8 MPG. Even being driven ultra-gently, 5,200 lbs. + non-lockup 3 speed auto = slave to OPEC.

I have taken four working horns off one of these, and plan to improve the Mercedes's 'road presence'.

Kelly

A couple friends and I got the hare-brained scheme to put a big block Chevy into a '78 Impala. Trolling the junkyards we find a 500 in a Coupe DeVille and the light went off, more cubes than a 454, easier to find, should drop right it!

After a sawzall, lots of cussing, massing the firewall, converting it to a floor shift, clearancing the A/C suitcase and some fuel system work, it ran. And run it did! after being liberated from a 5,000 pound coupe, to a 3500 B-body complete with 2.73 rear end, had no trouble breaking the tires loose at will, never have clocked it, but I do believe it's the fastest B-body on whitewalls around.

texan01

When I think of competency, I think of numbers like 0-60 times, skidpad ratings, chassis stiffness, power/weight ratio and the like. And I think in most all circumstances, even the confused Accord would have one over the Eldorado.

@Spasticteapot: Unfortunately, I can't afford to own an S2000 or an Elise. And even if I could, it'd be tough for me to move myself to and from college in one. A sporty hatchback, however, is enjoyable to drive and big enough to carry what I need it to. And I would rather pick an enjoyable not-quite-sports car over a pure-of-purpose car whose purpose is to be cushy and large.

A buddy of mine had a '73 Eldorado convertible, red on white, handed down to him as his first car. It was his uncle's, had been garaged since new in Arizona, and only had 36,000 on the clock when he got ahold of it. Being seventeen, our first project was to slam the car on whitewalls, bolt up dual flowblasters, and install an absurd amount of sound equipment. Sadly Big Red just got all the wrong attention in greater boston so he ended up trading the old gal straight up for a CBR. Makes me sad a little bit remembering how much fun we used to have in that thing.

staaave

Back in the day, when I used to be friends with a certain son of a popular Chicago car dealer, he had an odd assortment of vehicles in the back garage. He had not one but TWO '71 Eldorado convertibles, both olive green one with white leather and the other with brown. The one with white leather was in slightly better condition than the other and one day I managed to convince him to get one of his mechanics to get the thing running. We took it for a cruise around the parking lot and it certainly moved around much better than its size implies. He was asking $1200 for it. I could've been KING with that car. Too bad I had no place (still don't) to store 40 feet of car.

1300ccsoffury

IIRC for most of GM two things occurred with the '71 model year:
1. A switch from SAE gross to SAE net for HP ratings
2. Adoption of low / no lead fuels.

Of course everything got generally bigger. The bodies from the early '70s were some of the largest GM ever built.

As for FWD in this car, the controls were so over assisted that driving was by remote control. Surely there was no physical connection between the steering wheel and the tires.

Where their "performance" truly stood out was in snow. Why wait for the snow plow? I have an Eldorado!

dfwguy
