In the US, there are varying hoops to jump through depending on the state you live in. The fact that it's based on a car that was first produced in 1957 can be helpful. The Atom does not share this trait. In NJ, I had to put a full windshield on...though I think it may more difficult these days to register one in the Garden State due to some changes in laws. Best is to find one that is already registered as a 1960s Lotus...

Why? Many of us prefer the lines of the narrow cars and don't need the extra width. Note that the CSR is available with a 260 Duratec and probably the other go fast goodies mentioned above. Though you'd be hard pressed to make weight if you start with a "fat boy" chassis. There is only so much weight you can pare off.

When is someone going to take the RX-7 engine, replace the iron castings with the alum. ones from those guys doing the airplane engine conversions, and stuff one of those 95-pound, 200+ HP engines into a Se7en chassis?
That's my dream ... maybe I have to do it myself......

Se7en is the written form when referring to cars other than those by Lotus or Caterham. So we tend to use it in mixed marque company.

Pronounced the same way as "seven". For a while there in the UK, they were using "Badgerham" ...but that never really caught on over here. And I think they stopped using it there too.

Though I have had communication with the factory (back when I was putting together the US 50th Anniversary meet), I am not really that up on what they are doing these days.

After getting my car in 2005, I'm not that interested in investing too much more time/money in a modern Se7en...though I find an original Series 2 very tempting for reasons other than pure pace.

I love this car. I've driven a highly modded 7 that was 220hp, 1100 lbs, on race slicks, and it was brutal. But even on race slicks, it wouldn't pull these numbers. Now I haven't raced in 4 years, and I'm perhaps not up on the very latest compounds, but I'm seriously in doubt about this 0-60 time.

@6street: Tires with a coefficient of friction of 4? If that were true, F1 cars would be able to pull 12-16 lateral g's. (It's aero that creates 3-4X downforce than mass that makes an F1 pull 3-4g's lateral...but they still don't accelerate at 3-4g's.) It's just not so. Unless when you say "on certain surfaces", you are referring to something like a velcro track? Hmm. Now there's an idea...

Rear or mid-engined RWD cars on the stickiest DOT tires being produced today, on aggressive brushed concrete, still won't pull more than about 0.80g after the initial boom. There can be a momentary spike while the weight is in the process of transferring to the rear, but that certainly doesn't last 2.88 seconds--more like 0.1-0.2 second. I would be willing to bet that this number was sucked out of an engineer's thumb.

If anyone has some data acquisition showing something over 0.8g or so of acceleration in a RWD car on any kind of DOT tires, I'd love to see it. I used to have a strip from a 1980's F1 car...it could pull 0.75g accelerating...while already going 100mph! That's brutal. It clearly had the power to do anything it wanted to 0-60. But the tires are the limiting factor.

Furthermore Jeb (and also UDMAN), the ability to take just about anything off the line is pretty much standard with any hot Se7en. Unless of course, you live in an area with several Veyrons and Caparos. There are plenty of sub-4.0 second cars running around.

Pretty sure that's the narrow body.

A few bones to pick: a Stack brand electronic dash was standard on the old r500...these are similar to the numerous "datalogging" electronic gauge clusters you see advertised in the back of Grassroots Motorsports.

As for the CSR being the more brutal of the two Cats...although I've never driven/had a ride in a CSR, it is supposed to be the more refined car. It's based on the wider SV body and has a fully independent rear suspension, unlike the DeDion or live axle set ups you see in the narrow bodied cars. Note that the CSR also comes with a 200 hp engine compared to this 263 hp car.

I'm just sayin...

Also, I kind of hate the new dash. There is nothing like toggles that seemingly predate safety regs to make the whole "this is not like other cars" feeling complete.

Wow, I leave work a little early one day to attend a school function and I miss 1/3 of the fun.

Of course, I will never tire of Se7en coverage, so keep bringing it. And not just Caterham stuff please, I heard that Birkin's got a new US importer now...

As for 0-60 times, I know of at least 2 US based one-off cars that can break the 3 second barrier, but this is probs the first time the factory has claimed it. Launch control is appealing, but as someone mentioned, how much technology should a Se7en have? Pretty soon we'll see the Caparo Se7en...

I think the looks of the Seven appeal to people who like utilitarian things, if you're the sort of person who thinks a unimog is pretty because it's functional, who buys army surplus bags because you figure they're durable, who can look at the technical drawings of a Tiger II tanks gearbox and find the precise German engineering pleasing; if you're that sort of person the Seven will most likely appeal visually.

Surely you don't need wrinkle wall tires to be able to achieve this 0-60 time since rubber can achieve co-effecients of friction of up to 4 on certain surfaces, launch control should make sure you're not spinning the tyres very long and there isn't a great deal of momentum/moment of inertia to overcome when dumping the weight onto the back wheels during acceleration.

1115 pounds, 263 horsepower. I'd say that the extra 350 pounds for launch control is money well spent.

In other news, I just did the math, and the car will weigh twenty percent more with me in it--all pretty much right over the rear wheels. In other words, if I was driving the car, one-sixth of the car/driver weight would be inelegantly wedged into the driver's seat. Don't let any fatties ride in your Caterham R500, or you'll be dealing with a serious rearward weight bias and accompanying oversteer that would make an early 911 look tame.

Furthermore, Caterham is working on a version using the RS Performance supercharged V8, which produces 500 horsepower....but with a total weight increase of no more than 30 kg.

Physics Test--

Caterham claims the R500 will go 0-60mph in 2.88 seconds. This works out to 0.97 consistent g's of forward acceleration, in a RWD car. Is this because

A) Caterham thought it would be cool to make the claim based on wrinkle-wall drag tires.

B) Caterham has amazing downforce...see them wings?

C) The laws of physics are automatically revoked anytime a British vehicle makes it to 60mph without billowing smoke out of the engine, the transmission, or the wiring.

C) When Caterham makes a "claim" they don't necessarily feel compelled to back it up in the real world.
