For you people that say that Ford has "copied someone", I hate to hurt your feelings but this is totally an "in house project." Matter of fact, if you go to the link at the bottom: you will find out Mullaly if aiming towards a global car! If you still don't follow me, I'll tell you plain and simple. This is the North American version Ford Falcon. Yes that's right it's coming to America! the only big diff. from the pic I notice is the front clip. But if you notice the grill and the ground effect. You know that this is truely the Ford Falcon with a little tweaking.

I think that the styling is a vast improvement over the current Taurus which is dull and very unrefined. It seems that there is a much better attempt to refine the detailing - something that the original Taurus excelled in back in 1986. But I can't help thinking it looks remarkably like the Hyundai Sonata. The current ad for the Sonata (the one with Adam Smith), show's the Sonata from the exact same perspective. The cars look very similar.

Way back in 1986, I remember reading a comment by one of the designers on the Taurus. They were most proud of the detailing on the car. Indeed, it was the detailing that made the original Taurus special. That was a lesson that Ford didn't learn. Despite the success of the original Taurus, over the years Ford has cheapened the details of every car more and more to the point where the cars are boring and undesirable. What we can't see in the shaky picture is the hard plastic, square unrefined details, and cheap plastic metals that Fords in the US always have. Unless that has changed, then this Ford will be yet another Ford failure.

This car is going to look good sitting next to my 08 Roush 428R and 90 Kenny Brown SC T-Bird. I got wind of this car a month ago, we had an 08 Limited Taurus on order since Nov 07, the same day we bought the Roush, over 4 months later and no Taurus we cancelled, my wife is so glad we did as this car is nice, and we were hoping for a Falcon clone and here it is, my dealer knows what color and options we want, everything and Limited. Get my wife her car Ford her 03 Explorer Eddie V8 is killing us on gas.

I had a '92 SHO, white on white & I kick myself every day that I didn't buy it at the end of the lease. It was the last year of the manual trans only.
I'm a 58 year old woman who loves speed & there hasn't been an American car since who has excited me like that car did. It was slow off the line, but hang on when the torque kicked in in 2nd gear.

If Ford has FINALLY awakened to what I really want to buy and IF this car is anywhere near that SHO, then count me in as a serious buyer.

I believe Ford has had many home run concept cars and trucks, also I believe there powertrains when they were all Ford left little to be desired I think most folks would agree that when this company wants to do something right and take a chance they usually come out ahead. I am asking Alan Mullaly directly to please concider this when he plans the new Taurus as we believe in Ford to innovate and to bring their A-game to the mat which will by far beat the foriegn competition hands down. Put the money into the product take a chance. There are those of us who want to buy AMERICAN give us an ALL-FORD BUILT SEDAN make it befitting of an AMERICAN ... we'll buy it in droves you'll see.

I like the looks of the 500 and the new Taurus. The new Taurus kind of had to grow on me though. It only took seeing the new Taurus on the road a few times. I wish the back had changed more from the 500, but man does it look distinct compared to other cars.

This new 2010 Taurus concept, if this image is genuine, appears to be what everyone wants in looks. After reading the above comments it appears Ford is on the right track. I do like it as well, but in appearance it wont be as distinct as the current Taurus.

Here's hoping for Ford!

By the way, where was this photo supposedly taken?

@ranwhenparked: That's exactly it. I've said that about every ChryCo vehicle from the last five years too - Magnums, 300s, and Chargers look decent with alloys, but they look like shit with grey hubcaps. GM's even worse about it...

At least most of the Tauri I see around have alloys, at least the new-gen ones.

I agree that I like the looks of this very much. I do see a bit of the Mondeo influence in the front end, which is quite attractive. Even a hint of a Hyundai Sonata in the front end as some have also said. What I also thought I noticed, that nobody has commented on, is the whole greenhouse, from the A-pillars on back, sure seems to bear a striking resemblance to the Volvo S80. While I don't own any Ford products, I think Ford is on the right track as I have liked the Fusion and even the 500/Taurus. Have actually driven a Focus several years ago and found it to be a great little car. Especially looking forward to the next, all-new Focus - you know, because gas prices aren't likely to be getting any cheaper.

Man, quite not-bad for a Taurus. The pre-Five Hundred Taurus I didn't think was *bad* looking, rather, inoffensive in every way; boring. Then the Fusion came out and I thought "Damn! an edged Tempo looks good!" (The Tempo being one of the ugliest cars ever)

I'd personally like to see this look a little more aggressive - lean it toward the CTS in proportion, the Fusion would inspire styling that would make that work, but the Mondeo is a nice inspiration as well... Maybe inject a little Interceptor heft to the fenders...

Not that I'm a car-styling guru, but it's been a long time since I've seen a Ford that made me want to buy it. The new cars being rolled out have *potential*, but something always ends up still so "yawn, Ford" about them. I'm hopeful for the Flex, was intrigued by the Interceptor, and fell in love with the MK-Z; but have been somewhat disappointed by the Edge, new Mustang, and the late Thunderbird upon actual driving.

I suspect the picture is actual. I agree that there seems to be knowledge that the 'bar' grilles are going out.
I find the new 'full size' Taurus very attractive. With the reported Twin-Force (eco-boost) package rumored being added to so many cars, I think Ford is fast tracking to some awesome drives!

Yes, I wonder what that clay car in the background is also..? Might not even be a Ford facility, could be an outside company (with less security :0).

I know what you mean about the MKS looking kinda rounded in pics. I haven't gotten in one yet, but got passed by a pre-production unit on the way home yesterday. I though it looked really good in person out on the street. Once that "Eco-boost" is out next year its worth checking out for sure. I would sincerely doubt the ride to be similar to the MKZ, which was stiffened from the Zephyr for "sportiness."

I too wish for the Interceptor.

I like this incarnation, and I think it deserves to have a proper formal wagon variant to accompany it.

I'd root for coupe, convertible, and Ranchero (i.e. two-door body) spinoffs as well, if it were not for the realities in today's marketplace that make such proliferation impractical. More's the pity...

Nevertheless, the 2010 4-dr. sedan is a handsome full-size sleigh that I'd consider buying.

@rlj676: Aw, you reminded me. I'm just not feeling the "Lincoln-ness" of the MKS enough. Too swoopy and jelly-bean-y. Still, that powertrain lineup is enough to make me head in there for a test-drive. Have you driven the MKS? The MKZed had a bit too... truck-like... ride, and I'm curious to know how they've improved on that.

Back to the Interceptor then. rlj676, inform your bosses that I'm waiting for the Lincolnized Interceptor. This is a move toward Ford of Europe's kinetic design, which means they will eventually be uniting the North American and European product lines like they've been saying. Why do people keep bringing up midsize cars? The Mondeo and the Malibu just aren't comparable. This is a full-size. It has the same problem as the fusion: small car styling cues on a gigantic vehicle.

The Fusion, seen without any scale indicators, looks like an early 90s Civic. The Taurus, in turn, looks like a mid-size sedan. If you actually get up close to them, they're considerably larger than their styling cues indicate.

When the Ford 500 came out the fan boys shouted, who cares if it looks dull. So does a Camry/Accord! People will love it!

But you don't get people's interest by being subtle, especially when the previous gen is so boring. Ford needs to generate the same excitement as Chrysler did with the 300 not too long ago. Even the previous Altima got people's attention. This Taurus looks nice and clean, like a larger Hyundai Sonata. And it will stand out and do just as well in the marketplace as its predecessor.

There are some Camry-esque lines in there, but compare the cars side by side and the Toyota is outclassed. This Ford is nice! Of course, the Camry is a real, reliable car, and this is just a figment of somebody's shaky cell phone camera. But there's hope!

Ford designers, if your reading I'm liking the hood cowl-induction scoopage, but the bodyline around the bottom of the windshield looks a bit tall.

Bear in mind that while the Malibu is a midsize, the current Taurus is actually a full-size car, and the new one will continue with those dimensions.

I'm not confirming nor denying this is the new Taurus.

But, I've seen the new Taurus, and it's nice, real nice. Interior especially.

There are also electric powered clay models that are drivable, but I don't think they would have super limo tint all around.

That's, uh, actually pretty nice-looking.

Now if they'd come out with a good SHO with all-wheel-drive and a nice little high-revving V8 or twin-turbo V6...

Or, better yet, make me an AWD high-po version with a Lincoln or Mercury styling treatment, I would buy that tomorrow. Personally, I just don't want the blue-oval badge.

Unless it's an Interceptor. Anyone heard any word on when that thing comes to market?

"NEW KIND OF RICE COMING OUT SOON" is significant not because rice is super interesting, but because it's a staple.

If Ford can't successfully sell a Taurus, they'll also never sell the Focus RS, Mustang, or any other car of theirs that is more in line with Jalopnik's proclivities.

Re: Malibu--I don't know if anyone can beat that design at the moment for the midsize non-luxury segment. Just personal preference, though.

Looks good in the shaky pic, but I think the actual execution will come off more like a current Camry. Doubly so if it sees widespread acceptance.

Also, doesn't it seem to be sitting very high off the ground? Maybe it just has black lower valances.

@OldeEnglishD: I thought the last one (Taurus/500) was not bad in a solid family-sedan kinda way. But yeah, this is actually kinda hot.

They dumped the Jaguar line fast enough so they could crib some of the design elements and not have to worry about competing against themselves.

I'm not in the market for this particular vehicle, but who wouldn't like to see this in a wagon? Anybody? Go on, raise your hands. It'll be easier to pick out the ones we need to shoot.

Damn..... I think the Malibu has been overthrown in the "Best Looking Mid-sized Car" category.

If the car looks that good in person, it'll prove that Honda and Toyota have totally lost the plot, design wise.

Assumings its priced about the same as the current Taurus, that would be one slick looking car for $23k.

The question is whether it will still look nearly as good with plastic wheel covers and most of the chrome gone, as will no doubt be the case on the base models.
