@Eldorado: Can't agree more. The Packards of the late thirties are legendary. Guy here in Tombstone had a '36 Roadster, and yeah it was completely silent. Another guy here has a beater '53 Caribbean, and we got it running one day and tried to balance nickels on the head of the straight eight while it idled. If the car had been parked level it would have worked. Studebakers were cool, but not when they were billed as Packards. Fun trivia fact- a Packard won the 1953 Carrera Panamericana.

CptSevere

This is without a doubt one of the saddest chunks of offal to ever roll on four tires. I lived through twighlight of the Packard and I remember vividly when this sad, grotesque, baroque, parody of an automobile came out. There was a lady who used to visit her daughter in the house across the road from us. She arrived in a Brewster green 1939 Packard phaeton with sidemounts and great white sidewalls that produced the only sound you could hear when the car was moving -- a discreet rushing sound of rubber against macadam. I would walk out and admire the gleaming chrome, the saddle leather seats, the separate radio controls in the back seat, all the while conscious of my reflection in the huge flat doors. In less than a decade we had come to THIS! I always imagined that Packard tried to pick up the spirits of their doomed workers by allowing each one to add a piece of trim from a big bin to these cars as they rolled down the assembly line. "Hey, let's try that ships wheel!" "All RI-I-IGHT!" This car is the note left at the site of a corporate suicide pact.

Eldorado
