An additional X prize couldn't hurt because batteries are so crucial for cars and laptops and the BigDog robot, but I agree with others: batteries are good enough right now, even the EV1's batteries were good enough to meet current interest in an electric car.

Many years ago the government and auto manufacturers set up the US Advanced Battery Consortium. It's now part of USCAR and also getting funds from the FreedomCar initiative. The latter's Wikipedia page summarizes some of the research projects. A lot of stars and stripes and patriotic language, but meanwhile the Prius and Insight (RIP) have been sitting around as the most fuel-efficient new cars sold in America for years. Go Volt!

the idea that we need some miracle battery to have EVs is completely unfounded. car companies would have you believe this because they don't want to have produce these clean, efficient cars.

10 year old NiMH battery technology is proven to work in EVs. the 1999-2002 toyota rav4-ev, for example, gets over 100 miles per charge even after 100,000 miles of use in some cases. hundreds of these are still on the road in the hands of the public and electric utilities. check out [evnut.com]

any sensible president or other leader would simply require production of EVs NOW and let private companies do their own research if they feel they need a better battery.

@thebike45: What they are making is a supercapacitor, not a battery per se. There's no doubt that supercapacitors work as advertised in the controlled conditions of a lab, but they are very, very fragile and difficult to mass produce. The questions are: (1) can EEStor's product stand up to the rigors of the real world, and (2) can they mass produce it? Time will tell - I'm hopeful but skeptical.

Talk of 130 MPG for the Volt has no basis in fact, that I'm aware of. To calculate the gasoline used by such a vehicle requires stats on the distribution of trips. The only stats like that are from the DOT stats on commuter trips in the US. That data indicates that a Volt with 40 miles of electric range would achieve mileage of
285 MPG while commuting, in the average case. Obviously, those 80% of commuters that wouldn't need any gas would have an infinite MPG.

@WilliamG.: I don't think so. I think this is the plan GM has to steal the #1 'green' perception crown from Toyota.

The real meat is their two mode hybrid system which improves the fuel economy on the vehicles that need the most help... like the Cadilac Escalade.

Now all GM needs to do is mate a diesel to the two mode system and they might be close enough to 35mpg that they won't have to do any significant downsizing.

The BIG news is the EEStor battery, about to go into production and to be used for conversions this year. If Jalopnik had ambition, he would get in touch with ZENN Motors and ask to be on their list of early converters and give them a Civic/Corrolla/or whatever cars they will be converting and then publish a report. I'm amazed at how
unaware th auto mags are about this. Potentially this is the end of the gas engine if these things work, and I don't
honestly see, at this point, how anyone can be skeptical,
at least about their potential. The auto media seems wedded to 1905 technology - I guess it doesn't like the idea of so much of its technical knowledge suddenly becoming obsolete - so it pretends electrification of the auto is years away and buries its head in the sand. Unbelievable!!

I can't imagine anything more uninteresting than a video of an old Malibu with cami paint driivng around USING NiMH batteries. Despite the claims, that is not the first test mule with the real Volt system - they haven't been assembled yet. That mule is running on NiMH cells probably
recovered from an old EV-1. Those babies are, and always have been an obsolete means of EV propulsion and only have been used successfully in plain Jane hybrids, despite the transparent lies of Chris Paine and his silly film.

I'm encouraged by the concept - the comparison of the EV-1 battery to the current version is good info. I used to think GM would be dead & gone by 2017, but vehicles like the Malibu + Caddy + electric concepts + dealing realistically with the pensions & bennies may just keep the general alive.

volt battery pack is 1/3 size of ev1 but same power, not energy. big difference there. ev1 had epa-certified 140 mile range and volt specs call for 40, so 1/3 size sounds like a step backward to me. ev1 batteries worked perfectly fine, and gm even had a working serial hybrid version of it 15 years ago. so why all this hype and no delivery of a volt yet? stick those ev1 batteries in and sell some cars.

Sounds like a great day at the pony show. As they went through the various systems being engineered for the Volt I couldn't help but reflect on how it is going to be a well built competitor, in a system engineering sense, to the 2004 Prius using a higher energy density and capacity battery so that the setpoint between EV and ICE could be moved more toward EV. Kinda of like those guys in CA have done and are doing by modifying existing hybrids for plug-in use. If GM can keep their eye on the ball and produce a model that doesn't compromise efficiency and design coherence, I'd love to buy one.

I don't know if anyone else caught this, but did you notice the emphasis placed on the word 'average' when the narrator was talking about the need for GM vehicles to average 35 mpg? And then yesterday NPR had an excellent segment on the current dealer markup on hybrid SUVs, often around $5k. SO, does this mean they will continue making other vehicles that get shitty gas mileage, and then use the volt to cover themselves? And of course dealers will no doubt tack a nice markup on there too - so once again, a hybrid currently isn't worth it for most individuals.

My my, seems this Jeff fellow had a scripted list of questions, unrestricted access to the testing facility, and way beyond cell phone cam recording equipment.
Seems the General has issues with the traditional car boyz, yet wants to show how advanced they are with the Volt so get the message out there in this way.

Maybe the collective "told 'ya so" tone to the reports of '08 vs. '07 sales results were the straw that finally broke the General's back and prompted them to find, or invent someone who would give them good press.

Sad thing is no one wants to see this project fail after the EV1 debacle, alot of folks are pulling for the car to happen, like now.
