@Foo2rama: I'm completely with you on that. I have not driven the new M3, as I don't think they yet exist where I live. I have driven a 335i, and I liked it. A lot. But the M3 seems to have diverged from its roots to me.

The M3 was always a light, fast, powerful, small car. At least by North American standards. This is not light, nor small. I was a bit peeved that the E46 had become a little too big. If this is not actually physically bigger (I haven't measured, obviously), it certainly looks bigger. I don't feel the spirit there.

I do love the C63, because the spirit of AMG has always been, "what's the biggest engine we can fit?" The RS4 doesn't have a direct lineage, but it's further proof that there are some people at Audi who are more than a little nuts, and that's fine by me. The IS-F seems to me like a research group suggested the addition of 27.3% more "fun" to the IS, and the soulless Toyota robots complied. So perhaps the M3 still sits perfectly in its chosen niche. But for my money, if I had enough of it, it wouldn't be in my driveway.

BeerDearthair

I am very pleased to see the M3 sedan back again (as yet another E36 M3 sedan owner in the crowd). It has so much more of that wonderful sleeper appeal that the boy-racer M3 coupe, of any generation, seems to overtly lack.

That being said, I really wish the carbon fiber roof had carried over from the coupe -- it really is one of the most striking features about the E92 M3.

Finally, to just state the obvious for the sake of posterity -- anyone who compares the M3's S65B40 to the Corvette's LS3, or any of the other LS series engines, must remember this: the pushrod powered motor has more than two liters over the Bavarian's DOHC mill. That it will produce more torque is inevitable; that the difference in horsepower output between the two is negligible impresses on the Bimmer's part.

DragoonRaven

@tentacles: I'm now curious about what all of these manufacturers stated weights include. I'm sure there's no conspiracy afoot, but if the BMW engine weight includes the weight of the oil, or exhaust, or control electronics and the Audi stated weight doesn't, then it's a bit dishonest to compare the two. Also, I don't think you could replace the BMW V8 with the Audi V8 and have a car with better driving dynamics, so I think that aspect of the question is a moot point. The engine and the rest of the vehicle are two systems designed together to complement each other, and using a new engine would necessitate changes in the vehicle.

Now if you're asking me which engine I'd rather have in a theoretical custom car/kit car/whatever, I think I'd probably take the Audi engine over the BMW or LSX variant, although the LS7 with the dry sump is very tempting. I think if you took each engine to its maximum, the Audi engine would have a higher theoretical performance limit, though that's largely academic. Basically, though I'm impressed with what GM's done with the small block chevy platform, I'd rather build a car with the BMW or Audi engines.

elwood

I will say that, IMHO, the old M5 V8 (S62, in BMW-speak) was not noticeably better than the equally powerful V8s used in the CTS-V (the LS6 and LS2). All three of these engines pulled like freight trains with solid rocket boosters attached, sounded like the thunder of Thor's voice through the halls of Valhalla, and made the huge sedans they were embedded in do wicked, terrible things that family cars just shouldn't do.

Preferredcustomer

@elwood:

Meh. I am one of the bigger BMW fanbois you will find, but even I concede that the GM LSX engine architecture is superior in most ways to BMW's M powerplants. The pushrod LSX is a physically smaller package than the BMW's DOHC V8 (I don't know about weight; I haven't seen figures on the 4.0L), yet it provides the same or better power with much more torque and far greater tuning potential. Throw in the fact that it is much, much cheaper and you've got a winning argument.

The fact that BMW didn't design a pushrod cam-in-block seven liter V8 to make 500 hp and instead went with a DOHC V-10 (for the M5) has more to do with technological chauvinism than with any inherent superiority in the BMW design.

Preferredcustomer

I like the LS3, and it's great for GM cars and engine swaps alike, but the engine design created by BMW engineers is a result of the system dynamics they wanted to achieve.

elwood

And for those of you that haven't been doing your Jalopnik homework:

"Intelligent energy management featuring Brake Energy Regeneration likewise
serves to further enhance the efficiency of the V8 power unit in the
new BMW M3. In this case the power required for the on-board network is
generated specifically during overrun and during application of the brakes,
serving to charge the car's battery at exactly the right time without taking up
any of the energy contained in the car's fuel. As long as the engine is "pulling"
the car, therefore, the alternator generally remains disengaged. Apart from
particularly efficient generation of electric power, this also serves to provide
more drive power and traction for supreme acceleration at all times."

Wes Siler

I'm really interested in the disparity between the M's (comparatively) low torque and high horse power curves. I imagine the "low" torque helps the around town drivability, but do you notice it when driving spiritedly? Did you tend to keep the revs up to stay up in the higher HP curve?

cyclopticgaze

As to the question if the M3 is worth the extra cash over a 335i...YES. I have an '08 M3, and my sister purchased a 335i in '07. Having driven both, the M3 is an entirely different animal. The M has a better ride around town for normal driving (which was not the case with my E46 M3. That was liking riding an angry mule on a bumpy road), and has nearly endless grip for a RWD vehicle. If you can afford it, it's worth it. Only "downside" I've spotted so far is that when you really get on it and hoon it up you'll be getting 5mpg, but what do u expect from a 8200pgm V8?

brad-disaster

I can say from personal experience that anyone comparing the 335i to the M3 V8 has not driven both cars. The m3 I somehow got to test drive was much better than the 335. Like the reviewer says you can't detect any body roll. Cornering is so flat it is almost unbelievable. The car basically feels like some extension of your body when driving. I've heard other cars described as telepathic. They're not. This car is telepathic. The 335 is nice, and it's quick etc etc. But nothing can replace the feel, sound, and speed of this new M3. Anyone who denies it's superiority over the 335 just doesn't have enough money or balls to own one. With that said, I now can't drive any other car without wanting this one. I'm starting my savings plan so I can get it ASAP.

fjork_duf

@ConnorW: No LSD on the 335; in fact, the only BMW Group vehicles that have mechanical limited slip differentials are M cars and MINIs (where it is a $500 option).

The lack of an LSD is the 335's Achilles heel, especially in something like autocrossing. You just cannot put the (prodigious) power down. There are aftermarket solutions, but they are $$$$.

The conspiracy theorist in me believes that BMW does not offer LSDs either from the factory or as part of their "BMW Performance" line of Fast and Furious gear in order to drive up sales of the M cars.

Preferredcustomer

I can barely crack it open without getting into "your ass is going to prison, son" territory. It's a fantastic car in every way, with the speed of my old E46 M3 and the drivability/livability of my old 330i. A nearly perfect combination.

But then BMW had to go and build this. Which is like the 335, turned up to eleven. And while I almost never turn the 335 up to ten, how can I pass on one that goes to eleven?

Plus, with a real LSD, it will let me leave real, honest-to-god smoky burnouts, something that the peg-leg 335 can't really do. That's worth, what, 10 grand right there.

Preferredcustomer

The big question for me is not whether the M3 is spectacular, because I know it is. It's whether the M3 is enough better than the very impressive 335i to justify the 15-25 thousand dollar price bump.

I am afraid that the answer is yes.

Preferredcustomer

I had a chance to drive one at the GM Milford Proving Grounds a few months ago, and it was the best "Drivers Car" I have ever been in. It literally felt like the car knew what you were thinking and where you wanted it to go before you ever turned the steering wheel. I know everyone jokes about BMW drivers, but while we laugh at the "Pricks on the inside" lines, they are laughing at us because their driving experince is so much more enjoyable than ours. Bastards.

OldeEnglishD misses Polar
