@AndyDuncan: electric motors in the wheel makes perfect sense; best possible weight distribution and reduction of parts (especially moving parts) - lowest possible and on the 4 corners, motors can also function as brakes = further weight reduction.
More space, more flexibility in design....

that makes so much more sense than a NEV. Even though I live in a city, and most of trips are less than 40 miles, I still need to go on highways. The quicker this is on the market the better.

If you have one electric motor per wheel then there is no torque split - each motor delivers 100% of its available torque from standstill. I would also imagine that the usual issues with unsprung weight would be less of an issue on a superlight citycar with relatively low peformance - the space gains made from that type of packaging would be more than worth it.

@Kaneda: motors in/on the wheels/hubs are a bad idea because they're heavy. Unnecessary unsprung weight. Plus, you can only ever send 25% (or 50% in 2wd) of your torque to each wheel. Mechanical/electronic LSDs let you send more than 25% (or 50%) of torque to a wheel.

Can you imagine how much torque down low an STI would have with the help of small electric motors on each wheels? I would get two.

Subaru says it's supposed to convey the firm's aviation heritage, and this one does look a bit like a seaplane landing, with the, er flaps down.
