Land Rover Defender. Duh. And yes, it's all-wheel drive. All four wheels permanently driven through a centre differential.

Number two on the list is the Audi Ur-Quattro / Sport Quattro. An absolute beast of a car. There's a beautiful one on eBay just now. An early model with white paint, white Ronals, an analogue dash and no sunroof. Unfortunately I don't have a garage to keep it in.

I think cgarison may have already said it somewhat (too many comments to sift through), but the Jeep NV242 transfer case had a mode for an open center diff which effectively made an awd mode, you could leave it in all the time at all speeds. AWD and 4WD fun in one vehicle!

The one I'd most like to get my hands on would have to be the Sport Quattro S1 or a 959.

That I've actually driven? My dad's old '91 200TQ. About 300hp with the chip and whatnot, with an absolutely ridiculous amount of grip and TOTAL sleeper status. The degree to which it could decimate any other sedan of the day in stoplight racing was something else...and it ran to 220K on the original drivetrain (including clutch!). Insanely wonderful machine, except for the UFO brake rotors....

By far the AMC Eagle. It was the best of the breed. Actually it created the breed.

The Cherokee falls second with its unibody, car like construction and heavy use of the Eagle parts bins. Plus with the NP242 transfer case, it could outhandle a Z3 or Imprezza RS in stock configuration with small 15" 225 tires.

Well, the most EXCITING all-wheel drive I've ever experienced was my bicycle with clothesline wrapped around the tires back in the long-ago snows of Rector, Pa. But now I'll stick with what I have mentioned before: 1997 Land Cruiser (or LX 450) with those locking diffs. I know, I know; it's "four" instead of "all" but its the absolute best. @Maymar: I second the 1988-1989 Pontiac 6000 STE AWD. It's my favorite older AWD car. I go so far as to include it in my personal fantasy garage. (What? Someone's putting a GM A-body in his PFG! Yes, I am, and if you don't like it, piss off.)

The old A-bodies were respectable machines back in the day (I still have one in my fleet). The 6000 STE AWD was a step better—they fitted a modified S-10 rear-end to it for AWD. While its 3.1 L 60° V6 is anemic by today's standards, it was a Reagan-era firebreather that pounded the pavement with four wheels.

And complementing all that go-forward ability was a high-performance four-wheel ABS disc brake setup, which was at the time restricted only to the highest-performing of cars. This car wasn't designed with the old Detroit “we'll getcha movin’, you worry about the rest” mentality. It was made for serious motoring.

Saying that rear-end was a “modified S-10” design was a bit of an understatement. What they did was turn it into an independent rear suspension design. Sure, IRS was already showing up in some other mainstream FWD cars at the time, so GM made sure to make this setup special. They added a self-leveling rear air suspension to keep the car level, and they fitted vehicle-speed-sensitive struts to the front suspension. The car was more than just a linear motion machine—it could turn.

OK, so it has credible mechanicals—what about the interior? Well, it was awesome by 1988 standards. While it had a 1980s aesthetic, it was still nicer than most 2008 sedans. Digital doodads in the instrument cluster? Check. Bazillion-way power seats? Check. You name it. Check, it has it.

The STE-AWD was a true performer. During its run, it beat the BMW 3-series in the comparison tests. While GM has long marketed Pontiac as the “poor man's BMW”, the STE-AWD was the last car until the 2004 GTO that actually delivered the goods.

The only flaw was that GM used the THM-125C 3-speed transaxle for the AWD setup. I guess the old 440T4 couldn't handle the abuse of that “big” V6 and AWD.

OK, there's one more flaw. Despite being a 20-year old GM, parts are now made of sterling unobtanium.

The 24hrs of LeMons car that never was. Friend flipped it in the field the day these pictures were taken. Was an 87 GL Sedan FWD, had the suspension, transmission, clutch, and rear end from a GL-10 Wagon. Painstakingly installed in the garage in the first picture. Suprisingly, the welds held on the rear subframe pins and the diff carrier and rear suspesnion was in tact after the flip. The roof was crushed beyond repair.

1. the audi coupe gt was fwd not awd. you're thinking of the ur-quattro, awd, I-5, coupe.

2. AWD IS NOT THE SAME AS 4WD: [en.wikipedia.org]

3. the greatest awd car of all time, without question, is the audi sport quattro - the short wheelbase version of the ur-quattro.

GMC Typhoon over the Syclone for me as I like my storage area less vulnerable to the outside world, but solid call. 1st choice would be an Audi Allroad 2.7 manual. I know they just tarted up an A6 with an adjustable suspension and plastic cladding, but plastic cladding speaks to me.

first obvious answer: Audi 5000 CS Quattro Turbo. Locking front, center and rear diffs with defeatable ABS for dirt road hotness, a 5-speed and a turbocharged 10v 2.2L 5-banger that sounds completely glorious. Fun car.

Second choice: GMC Syclone. 'Nuff said.

Third choice: Subaru Legacy wagon + 5 speed + turbo = epic win

1986-1989 Toyota Van 4x4 conversion van. Go anywhere, have toyota reliability, and a plush (for the 80s) interior w/ an ice maker.

The non-US Hiace/Townace with a turbo diesel would be wonderful. Our Canuck friends up north get access to these.

Those 4x4 Tercel Wagons were pretty cool too!
