compression ratios in passenger diesels have been falling for years in an effort to meet tightening NOx emissions. Values of 16.5-18 are common these days. The relatively low value used here may be due to high boost pressures or, to a desire to keep engine weight within reason. It is a V12, after all.

Diesel engines for commercial vehicles, locomotives and ships all feature higher compression ratios (for efficiency) and lower hp/kg (for longevity).

@racerx: diesels use high compression, not spark plugs, to ignite fuel. i think 16:1 might be a little low for a diesel, actually...

@ivision actually that was a gti and wasn't a diesel, and was also (as you said) a concept car thus making actual priusownage beyond reach.

Now this is sweet! In the Q7 it was ridiculous, but in a R8 it is an instant classic. One that will hopefully help changing the old fashioned views on Diesel people have in the US.

New roof treatment, cool. New spoiler, cool. New rear ducting, cool. New front? Hideous! And for God's sake, why would anyone want a heavier, less sporting, diesel powered "Supercar? Cutting weight from the original design would increase performance, improve handling, and improve fuel-economy/eco-groovyness without resorting the clatter and splutter of compression ignnition. I love the idea of ncreased diesel usage as a way of offsetting some of the carbon numbers in the US, but this isn't the way forward.

I typically don't get all that worked up about supercars. It's relatively easy to drop a 600hp V10/12 into a light mid-engine chassis and get 9mpg for several hundreds of thousands of dollars.

But for this? My heart quickens just looking at it.

+1 for the JFG...but only after someone on the Jalop staff drives it...preferably coast to coast.

1) I fucking love it but hope other colors will be possible.. red is teh suck to me.

2) ever since the post of the concept car, I've had something to think about (courtesy of ym girlfriend, whom somehow came up with the practical question): Do you get water in your engine when washing it??

3) no mention of Fuel stats or price?? The TDI concept sported respectable numbe rofr a supercar... just curious about that and how many hold ups, couches to search, purses to nab, kidneys/other organs to pawn off, piggy banks to smash, etc etc

In Murilee's comparison between his Honda and the V8 R8, he cited the Honda's towing capacity as an advantage. Clearly Audi sought to rectify the situation.
