If you crawl under the car, you see four exhaust pipes. The oval rings at the back are what Lexus is calling "Sound Resonators." Lexus swears that they are only there to improve the engine note.

Just to clarify, the exhaust tips are real. Edmunds drove a preproduction one. Autospies drove a later model and the exhaust tips are fully functional and connected:

Does it really matter if the those are the real pipes or if the real pipes tuck nicely behind what is shown? Performance is no different. As a driver, you won't see it. And as an owner, I'd imagine any exhaust and rear bumper issues are much less expensive to repair.

Complicated rear pipe setups like that are just a PITA waiting to happen. Imagine trying to get those pipes to meticulously line up afterwhile or the cost to replace them if you back into a curb. Anyway, the IS-F got amazing reviews here on Jalopnik so I'm sure it will be a great car despite having no soul.

@Number_Six: Correct me if I'm wrong, but I think that was only true of preproduction models. I remember reading a test somewhere (here?) in which a Lexus rep said they'd all be connected in the final production model.

That is one of the ugliest cars on the road today. Build quality aside, I rank it right there with Aztek. But I've rarely heard anyone else criticize it's appearance before.
