Well, here I am in Delray Beach, Fla. for the winter thinking back over all the times I've been in ice and snow on treacherous roads back home in Pennsylvania in the mountains east of Pittsburgh. All kinds of exotic vehicles come to mind, and I think back to how we all learned to drive in the snow with whatever we had at hand because it was a matter of survival i.e getting to your job etc. because it would not be "called off on account of snow." I remember my Uncle George carefully negotiating the old Lincoln Highway and some scary sideroads in his 1946 Chrysler Windsor with Fluid Drive. Once you got the hang of it, that not-quite-automatic transmission could ease out of snow drifts and over black ice with memorable aplomb. But, I digress. My pick is a 1994 to 1997 Land Cruiser with those locking differentials and live axles front and rear and that amazingly smooth and powerful straight six. (If you will recall, Land Cruisers got a bit fat and soccer mommish after '97, with coil springs and less 4-wheel machismo.) I have had Land Cruisers (a 94 and now a 97)get me out of many a hairy and even mega-hairy situation. I recall particularly one late winter afternoon atop Laurel Mountain, driving a dirt road in five inches of snow. I took a turn onto what I thought was a timber road. It turned out to be a snowmobile trail. I was descending it down a hollow on what I judged to be about a 12 percent grade. I came to a boulder in the middle of the trail. I somehow did a K-turn, brushing a few small trees and the "Crusher" climbed back up the mountain and back to the road with an assurance that slowly drew all the tension out of my fingers gripped on the wheel. A buddy of mine who worked as a civil engineer in Sudan, agreed that the Land Cruiser was often literally a life-saver for him. His had a diesel engine and a front-mounted winch "great for pulling yourself out of quicksand." Definitely the Land Cruiser for me.

Eldorado

Honestly, I'd settle for a XR650L with aluminum panniers and an oversize tank. All I need is the panniers. Toyota got nothing on XR reliability. I've had 2 in 29 years and the first one still runs fine. I have kept a grueling maintenance schedule consisting of changing the oil once a year before storage and putting in a new spark plug every 2-3 years. Sometimes.

mytdawg

Middle 80's Toyota 4x4. Yes, it is an utterly uncool ride. But: the 22R engine defines reliability. It can be fixed by anyone who can find the pointy end of the screwdriver. Repair parts are everywhere. Everywhere. Mix-and-match from one Toy to another is like swapping Legos. It gets decent mileage. Diesels can be had, so you can brew fuel from the corpses of dead zombies. And there is no lack at all of aftermarket keep-from-dying equipment that fits the Toy.

I lived in a VW camper van (beat up 68 model) in the parking lot of my faculty for over a month back in college. It was a 1967 van that I bought for 300 Lira (about 250 dollars in todays exchange rate, 200 dollars at the exchange rate of the time). Bought some extra batteries, fixed up the engine (which I eventually swapped out for a diesel Golf engine), built the interior and it was ready to rock in 3 weeks. I was also working on a Triumph Spitfire so I had to make shortcuts (I used MDF for some interior panels for example rather than go for a nice oak finish). Being the only kid around with a camper van, actually taking camping trips to the beach became an enjoyable time as opposed to a strategic warfare plan.

But the survival part came at an odd time. I just parked the van in front of the school one day and never went home. I had my mini fridge, toaster and waffle machine, drew a power line with 4 extension cords from the school, used the school lavatories and showered in front of the van before anyone came to school. Hooked up my wifi, sat in the van at night with friends (occasionally of the opposite sex) watching movies until one day I woke up with a week of final exams and unfinished projects ahead of me. I survived the week with flying colors thanks to the van, which was transformed from a duct-tape solution to mobile entertainment into a connectivity and productivity palace. Two laptops furiously churning away trying to get video editing projects done in time needed my mini driver fan pointed at them to avoid overheating. The pull out table became a study desk of the likes noone has ever seen. So much information in such little space was like a living metaphor for the state of mind that I was in. I even had 'study groups' that would stay after school into the wee hours of the night cramming. It will suffice to say that on the last day of finals the study group ended up turning into something I am not at liberty to discuss.

Looking at events from the college student perspective, my camper van was more than just an ultimate survival vehicle. Sure it came with perks like ultimate social networking tool, ultimate mobile amusement park and ultimate mobile digital warehouse. The truth of the matter is my survival of exam week would not have been possible without the VW. It served its purpose many times over, but in all eventuality the 'ultimate' survival tool must provide more than just a means of 'survival'. You never use all the gadgets and gizmos on a Swiss army knife, but it's comforting to know they are there. On the rare occasion that you DO use them, it is usually for a purpose entirely irrelevant to the actual purpose of design of said gadget and/or gizmo. The camper van helped me survive college, but it had that little extra touch that was oh so essential when gathering friends to go kite surfing/buggying, that essential toast maker for when you just crave a cheddar and salami toast in the middle of the night, the always full mini fridge to accommodate the odd guest. It was always there for me, like a best college buddy.

oyumurtaci

I was thinking about going Afghan-Warlord style in a Toyota Hilux with a bed-mounted machine gun. Now that I think about it, though, I want an old Group 5 rally car (preferably a 205 T16 or a Lancia Delta Integrale, although I'd take an Ur-Quattro in a pinch) on dirt tires. With that, a bowie knife and a Colt Single Action Army revolver, I'll be able to handle pretty much anything. The car won't be particularly reliable, but I imagine that in a postapocalyptic scenario I'd learn to wrench on it pretty quickly just out of necessity.

Armand, Star-Spangled Pedant

that's an ultimate survival vehicle? In an apocolyptic scenario, how many mules are you going to need to tow your F550 cabin cruiser?

I foresee a return to sailing vessels when the oil runs low. With cannons.

@beta.rogan:

I've got that too, but i don't necessarily agree with the all tactics in the book. Stealth and quietness are perfectly fine, but the riding around on a bike is a little bit dangerous. It offers no physical protection despite it's manueverability and stealth factor. Also the fact that it is human powered really limits you. Professional cyclists have to eat tens of thousands of calories a day to sustain their efforts, and they're NOT killing zombies along the way. In a zombie-infected world, there's no guarantee that you'd be able to consume enough calories to maintain your pedalling whilst fending off brainless flesh-eaters.

Papercutninja

That stupid bus from a couple of days ago. The Prevost. Attach a towed Land Rover Defender 110 on it with anti-zombie armour. Of course the Prevost would have steel bars on the windows, anti-scaling fences on the roof and a couple of million candlepower floodlight system. I think that's called "Convenience Package B" on the brochure.

Modifications to said Prevost would be:
1. Cowcatcher type plow on front
2. Gun ports for the multitude of rifles on board
3. That cool chainsaw slot from Dawn of the Dead
4. Retracting outrigger wheels to prevent tip-over
5. Remote release for the trailer hitch
6. Solar panels
7. Outside gasoline tanks that double as a self-destruct system
8. Rainwater gathering system for drinking/bathing/cooking
9. "enduro" style motorcycle for recon missions

I think that that covers most of it.

Papercutninja

[i44.photobucket.com]

Marvin spent 18 months building this thing in his garage out of a Kamatsu Bulldozer. Here is the wiki entry:
The piece of construction equipment used in the incident was a Komatsu D335A bulldozer fitted with makeshift armor plating covering the cabin, engine and parts of the tracks. In places, the vehicle's armor was over one foot thick, consisting of concrete sandwiched between sheets of steel to make ad-hoc composite armor. This made the machine impervious to small arms fire and resistant to explosives; three external explosions and over 200 rounds of firearm ammunition fired at the bulldozer had no effect on it.

The dude was crazy, but Post appoctaliptic Bento will be able to make smart jabs at Jalopnik articles without fear of reprisals! All Hail Killdozer!

Bentos, Der Frischmacher!
