I still like the old-timey teardrops, since they're really only a couple of notches fancier than a tent, so you could still rough it in one, really.

I've always been under the impression that the whole point of camping was to avoid modern civilization for a while.

If I wanted a hotel room, I'd stay in one, rather than get 8mpg towing it behind a truck.

@paul_y: The Sylvan Sport Go thing isn't getting enough press IMHO. Brilliant design and fairly affordable ($6500ish). Airstreams Base Camp is a similar concept but $14,000 more expensive. The T@B was the tear drop trailer I was trying to think of... [www.tab-rv.com]

The former is meant to be roughing it (mobility, low cost, outdoors). That's something I enjoy, but not the wife. Dirty and smelly and "roughing it"

The latter, to me, is simply a way to take your hotel room exactly where you want, with none of the stained sheets and weird hairs in the shower. I find it silly when people even call that camping. Most of those things are better equipped than my house.

@eltonito: That trailer is really cool. I've tossed around the idea of cobbling together a teardrop trailer, because you could practically tow one with a bike. Plus, teardrops look really good, and are astonishingly practical for two people. Besides, users of those monster-trailers are not camping. They are merely exporting everything that's already annoying about the suburbs to a "campground."

All this said, I could use not only a CX, but one with extra wheels and length, but I probably speak for a number of Jalopnik readers.

@ash78: I think there are lightweight alternatives for trailer camping but most Americans want to tow a house, not a camper. I'm a tent camper, but I've been eying this trailer which is versitile and incredibly light weight - it can be towed with a New Beetle for Ralph's sake! Lightweight, small car towable tear-drop campers like those of the 50's and 60's are making a comeback as well.

I see way more "Prarie Schooner" 5th-wheels complete with furnace, generator and air-conditioning at campgrounds than I do basic, small campers. They are still fairly rare here.

One crappy thing about America is that RV camping almost always requires a truck (unless you go with a small pop-up). But in Europe, you see lots of midsize cars towing 4-person trailers. They simply build them lighter over there, since most people own cars. What's more, a car over there will have twice official the tow rating as the exact same car here. Must be a liability issue.
