to witness a bigger machine after a four foot snowfall has owned the land for several months...is exhilarating. I spotted some northen work machines chopping trees near the highway with what must have been 4-5 feet of snow on virgin ground..they leave a faultless trail of two ruts and a track that never spun,and there is the driver in the monster rig in a t-shirt puffin a smoke and no doubt listening to a cd not even skipping...at 15 below freakin zero. I want to jack up my old sube now...and flop over on straight aways like a tahoe...for no apparent reason but the big guy in the big machine makin me feel all tiny inside.

@Kelly: It's probably designed to run on low quality fuel (maybe multi-fuel), so that might contribute. I was also reading on [www.wikimakeitupia.org] that it's designed to start without pre-heating in temperatures as low as -25, which could also be a factor.

Could be worse, the predecessor BTR-60 and BTR-70 used TWO GASOLINE engines, one on each side with its own transmission. Not the optimal setup for crossing fire swept ground.

What kind of Lamborghini technology is being used to have an engine of almost twice the displacement of the 1999 Cummins ISB in my motorhome put out less horsepower & torque than said 5.9L Cummins?! I like the 2 MPG as a bonus, too. That beast outweighs the motorhome I'm comparing it to by about 4K lbs., and the MH doesn't float, but the 8-wheeled monster has me beat on aerodynamics.

Still, I want one.

The engine is actually a 260hp turbocharged diesel made by Kamaz, same brand that has a history of winning Paris-Dakar truck class. It just so happens that the block used here and in the Dakar truck is basically the same. So there are ready available parts to take this up to about 750hp. Top speed would then be something in the region of 100-110 mph

@13thfloorelevator: Stollies are great, but apparently the drivetrains are very complicated and a nightmare to maintain. As you say, the drivetrain 'wind up' due to the lack of diffs will cause the bevel gears to break if the vehicle is driven on hard surfaces for any length of time. Some Stolly owners combat the problem by occasionally mounting a pavement or running a set of wheels onto the roadside verge.

It would be true PCH, but I've often wondered if it'd be possible to transplant the running gear from a Saracen / Saladin / Salamander into a Stolly hull so it could be used more easily on the road...

Anybody else a little let down by 260 hp and 578 lb.ft of torque from a 10.85L supercharged V8? How can we remedy this unfortunate situation? I think 1000 is a good round starting point for this type of vehicle.

I used to know a guy with an Alvis Stalwart(same kinda thing, but British, leaky and with a huge Rolls-Royce straight-eight). It was awesome. Had to jack the nwheels of the ground to loosen up the transmission after driving it on the road, as the Alvis has no diffs. Which is pretty Jalopnik right there.

@evoCS: There is a Czech military version called the OT-64, which was fitted with a Tatra V8 diesel. Not terribly powerful, but very torquey. Performance isn't quite on a par with this thing, but adequate for scaring pedestrians and other drivers in city traffic.

Can Jalopnik find any more info on the YAK? It's a Russian snow vehicle manufactured using a regular truck or somethingorother fitted with airplane wheels and tyres/innertubes so it can travel the vast tundra of Siberia and float from iceberg to iceberg.
