As always, the comments here make me feel even older than I am. I was born in 1949, and I think I must have come home from the hospital in a 1942 Chevy 2-door coupe, baby s**t brown, as my mother used to describe it.
In a related story, I was 3 years old, riding in the front seat next to the front door as my mother turned a corner--the door swung open and I fell out on the street taking the box of strawberries that I'd been holding with me. It took my mother about 2 blocks to stop due to the bad brakes on the car. I don't remember it of course, just heard the story told more than once.

The way I heard it was I came home from the hospital in a brand new 67 Ford Country Squire Wagon.
My Dad had just traded the 65 Sport Fury convertible that my Mom had got for a graduation gift in on the wagon because he needed a "family car" now because of me. Ugh...I've never been a Mopar guy, but I've held a grudge against the Old Man for a lot of years over that move.

1977 Chevy Custom Deluxe 10, purchased a month prior for my dad's (now mine) cabinet shop. A month later, I was driven to Denver in it. Having driven it later in life, I am quite happy to still be alive. Apparently, "deluxe" meant power nothing, and the ability to imitate the driving characteristics of a Sherman tank. We retired it in 1998, and it is now probably your child's recalled Chinese toy. It deserved better.

I think my mother hitchhiked home from the hospital so it could have been anything.

But seriously, it was a not new 52 Ford. I distinctly remember it, as it hung around for quite awhile. Followed by a 52 Chevy, which was six years old but rusted to pieces, as it lived on the Lake Erie shore. I can remember looking at the road passing along through the floor boards. It had 3 on the three and I asked my first gear head question in it--"Every time the car goes faster, you move that (gear shift) and it goes back to slow? Why don't you just let it keep going? (reving)?"

I am completely envious of some of the amazing rides that home-delivered Jalops!

156 comments and no '57 Chevys yet? Unbelievable. I can fix that. I came home from the hospital in a '57 Chevy 210 2-door wagon. Sort of the poor man's Nomad if you think about it. It was that ubiquitous light blue with white roof two tone scheme that about half the '57 Chevys in existence seem to have received. Unfortunately its tranny went south 2 years later and my dad will never get a car fixed when that happens; he treats it as a sign that it's time to take it out behind the barn and shoot it. Not literally, but he did trade the wagon in on a '60 Lark. Damn that's a trade I would like to have back.

She subsequently cracked the oil pan and drove it (totaling the car), and replaced it with a Dark Red Acura Legend SE in which she regularly did 180s and raced the other parents back from field trips with us in the car.

I remember staring at the headliner as a child and getting dizzy from staring at the pattern...playing with the fresh air knobs cause I didn't think they worked...chewing on the "oh shit" handle...Mom losing control and doing 360s on an ice covered I-70 just west of the Eisenhower Tunnel...yeah good times

1948 FL with a factory sidehack. It wasn't untill 1953 that my dad bought a new F-1 pickup with a inline 6 and 3 speed. In 1954 he bought my mom a new Ford rag top. Red with a black top but no contential kit(bummer). My mom drove that 54 for years. in 1961 dad put a T-Bird 312 with a McCulla super charger in it. That thing went like hell at the time. I think that 54 is what started me going.

According to everyone in my family, the first car I rode in was a brand-new 1967 Chevy Impala convertible that my dad bought to celebrate my birth. He brought my mom and me home from the hospital top-down, to my grandmother's horror.

The other part of the story is that this was also the first car I ever owned, my father having titled it in my name.

Sadly, however, the trifecta was not to be complete. It was not the first car I ever drove. My father totalled it when I was still a wee laddie. This also killed my shot at the superfecta (in which the Impala would have also been the first car I got laid in).

I was probably driven home in my parents late '60s Volvo though it probably wasn't a long ride since I was born in an Army base hospital and they lived in base housing.

First cars I remember were an early '70s square Volvo 4dr with natural sisal woven matts in the floorboards and a 1956 Olds 4dr much like the post picture. Just 15-16 year old a hand-me down car from my paternal grandparents as a 2nd car it was rusty and dinged from NJ winter salt. It ate mufflers as it had the dual exhaust and was parked outside all the time. It sat with a mechanical problem for a couple years in my paternal grandmothers large driveway until my parents sold it to some teenager for $50 in the late spring 1976. Literally they and my uncle pushed it out into the street to be done with it and the kid to worked on it to get it running.

Yes to everything you mentioned. The 1983-1988 New Yorker was part of Chrysler's "E Class", basically an enlarged K-Car. All years had the electronic voice alert gimmick, similar to the Austin/MG Maestro and Montego of the same period.

The turbo engine was an option from 84-88. Somewhere on Jalop is a Ricardo Montalban commercial for the E-Class, which features the talking computer.

Never saw any other car do so...what was funny is that the voice was speaking in english so I couldn't figure out anything, even when I was able to understand people talking to me, given the fact that I'm from Quebec Ciry hehe...Go Nordiques heheh...

One other thing someone could tell me about is that I can recall my dad working on the engine one evening and he was furious about the turbo...did Chrysler actually offered the turbo option in 1984??

As far as i know, it's the 84 navy blue impala wagon i grew up with. Pontiac hubcaps, and bench front seat, to fit loads of shit. My sister cried when we got rear-ended and had to write off the car. I remember pulling grown pines with that thing, breaking the tow hitch in the process and then retrying the same thing. the craziest thing was the one puddle we forded in the middle of some deserted logging road, i swear there was water on the windows. Went we took a road trip up to Sept-iles one summer we mounted the backwards facing rumble seat in the boot and me and my sister rode most of those miles with no seatbelt and an electric bass case on our backs. It seems to me that at one point, perhaps involving our short lived farm, there was an incident with a pick axe. This would have been very early as the story was denied a couple years before the car met its end, in any case there was this round rusty hole about the size of the one for the key for the tailgate, opposite said tailgate keyhole for as long as i can remember.

A big, forest-green four-door Ford LTD (must have been a 72 or something like that). Dad scrapped it when the interior doors started falling apart, must have been around 1976. He ended up getting a gold-colored Ford LTD station wagon which was much the same car but a lot longer.

Our next car? A two-door Toyota Corolla (78 I think). Dad drove it for about 130,000km. Turned out to be the most reliable car he ever owned, although the fact that it had so few features (less to go wrong) probably had a lot to do with that.

At the same time I had a large Tonka Volkswagen Beetle - maroon w/ white interior - that I got when I was in the hospital getting my tonsils removed. Between the Corvair and VW, I have liked it in the rear as long as I can remember (uh, maybe I should rephrase that...)

I believe my first ride in a car was technically my ride home from the hospital soon after my birth in 1966 in my Dad's Fiat 600, however the one I can actually remmeber is his letting me "steer" our 67' Alfa Romeo Giulia Super into our garage from the driveway some time in 71'. My budding love of the automobile just grew exponentially that day! To wit, I have had 7 Alfa Romeos of my own, a Fiat, various Audi's, VW's, and a BMW. Plus a 76' Mercury Capri (my First car), 73 Pontiac Ventura and my current drive a Ford Focus ZX-3.

It was almost certainly the one and only car my parents owned at the time I was born, a red 1960 Pontiac Catalina (this was in late 1969).

They sold the car in late '72 or early '73. I have only the vaguest memories of the car - that it was red and that there was a small triangular puncture in the back of the front seat.

However, the first 2 cars wern't Mopars, but I'm not sure which came first: the black Rambler Classic station wagon (62, I think) or the beige 62 Ford Galaxie 500 convertible. My father, appropriatly, wrecked the Rambler....did I mention that the man drank?....and the Galaxie was returned within hours of arriving home, when the convertable top failed to deploy when a thunderstorm interrupted the inaugural family drive.

That would have been a blue 1959 Chevrolet Bel-Air 4-door w/283 V8, 3-speed column shift with factory overdrive. My folks bought it new, and though I wasn't born until '65, they continued to use it daily until the early '70s, when it was replaced by our '72 Impala...which was eventually replaced by a '78 Caprice Classic (I always thought it was cool that we climbed the ladder from Bel-Air to Impala to Caprice just the way GM planned...and MY first car was a Buick).

I never drove the '59 (though I hooned the '72 and '78 more than once), but it sat parked beside out house probably until after I went off to college (not really sure what was wrong with it). Back in the days before safety seats and seatbelt laws, I routinely rode beneath the rear glass on the package shelf, and I have vivid memories of being slammed into the backside of the front seats (and my brother's head) when a deer or something would run out in front of us and my dad would have to stop suddenly.

I can still hear the distinctive squeak of the clutch pedal as my mom drove me to school, and I remember the rusted out hole in the floorboard we covered with an old "Welcome" mat (great for discarding litter without getting caught). I took a number of chrome items off the car when I was a teenager to keep them out of the weather and still have them around somewhere. I also still have the cigarette lighter, which I've transferred from car to car over the years, as a memento of that '59. When it came time for me to buy a family sedan I sold my Celica and bought a 2000 Impala; I hope my kids get the same warm fuzzies from seeing an Impala 20-30 years from now that I get whenever I see a '59.

@ThnderbltDoherty: Wow, another Audi child :-) I came home in a mid 70s Audi Fox. 1.5 liter, 4 speed, 4 doors. By the time I was old enough to remember the car the rear doors has to be unlocked with a pair of needle-nose pliers and my dad had to keep his foot on the accelerator at stoplights to keep it idling. Still not enough to stop me from buying an Audi of my own first thing out of college (2000 A4 1.8T, Quattro). I've since sold it to buy my M, but still miss it on occasion, especially when it snows :-)

Ok, I have one no one has posted yet. Born in Portland Oregon in 1975, my first ride in a car was my mom's light metallic Green 1968 Opel Kadett 2 door wagon. Yeah, my parents had an Opel infection. They went through several of them during the '70's and early '80's. Mantas, Kadetts, and 1900's. My first car was a 1972 copper metallic Kadett 2-door wagon.

However the first vehicle I truly remember, and remember loving, was my father's 1955 Ford F-100 street truck. It was a grey black 2-tone job done in our garage. I was maybe 3, and I remember watching my mom hand painting the embossed FORD lettering on the tailgate in black. That truck had a Pontiac 389 Tri-power setup in it. One day my father went out to get the family dinner in the pickup, and came home walking. He'd sold it in the parking lot of a burger joint to someone who walked up to him with $2800 bucks. It was 1978, my dad had been laid-off, and $2800 was a fair chunk of change then. He, having 2 little ones just couldn't say no. But to this day, he wishes he could have.

It was also the first car I 'drove'. One day when I was 2 or 3 my father left the keys in the car. I hopped in and pretended to drive. I turned the key to the on position and moved the gear selector. I still remember the look on my father's face as he came running over to stop it before it hit my uncle's Chevy "Big 10" pickup.

Even though it wasn't anything really special I was pretty heartbroken when it was replaced in 1989 by a Pontiac 6000. My father talked about keeping it around to be my first car. Since that would be 6 years and we didn't really have a place to park it, it had to go.

My parents are both long gone, so I can't check with them. But I think that would be a 1942 Chevy 2dr coupe(this was in 1949)which as I recall from pictures was baby poop brown. The story was told that about 3 years later we were driving down the main street of Lovelock, Nevada and I was in the front seat and as my mother turned a corner the door flew open and I hit the pavement while she struggled to stop the beast due to bad brakes. Wish I had some pictures of it.

Dad went off to college in a new, powder-blue Ford Falcon 4dr. sedan, a '60 or '61. Met my Mom, knocked her up, then hastily married her out of town staying with his married older sister (this was 1963, and both families were prominant in their local communities -- they moved the anniverary date back a year to explain away my arrival seven months later). The car is long-gone, I'm middle-aged and greying, and Mom and Dad will celebrate their 45th anniversary in April.

If my Mom's mom ferried us from the hospital, it would have been in a less-than 2yr. old Buick or Chrysler wagon (Grandma got a new car every two years like clockwork until 1990. She will be 100 in October, and no longer drives herself.

When I was born, in 1978, my parent had a Renault 4. But I have no memory of it.
Then, my father bought a bordeaux Renault 20 (which was THE French CEO's car.)

Unfortunatelly, my mother destroyed it once, while parking. She had little space and there was a tree behind hear. She was that tired that she thaught she could go back and the tree would absorb the shock. Of course, the back-end of the R20 absorbed the shock and that was the end of the R20.

After that, my father had a couple of rented car, including:
- a black Renault 18 station-wagon

It was a nice car, at least until my father chose to replace the worn stock springs with some cheap aftermarket replacements that had it sitting about 2" too high. On mom's lap in a '65-68 MGB.

My folks lived at the top of a T-intersection in Frankfurt Am Mein at the time. When Dad left to take Mom to the hospital, the streets were one-way in one direction. When they brought me home, they were changing the directions of the one-way streets, and at the time, every street was one-way OUT from their apartment. One look at me on Mom's lap and the workers stopped all traffic to let Dad in. :) At the time, babies weren't taken out of the house until they were 6 months or so old, so I was quite a sight.

I wish I could go back to those days! The first pic was taken at my Dad's parent's house. I made many laps with my older cousin in the pasture behind the house in my aunt's Beetle when he was learning to drive. My grandma passed away just last year.

The house I grew up in is the one in the 2nd pic. They moved that house onto my Mom's parent's property just down the road,and my parents built a new house where the old one was.

I was taken home in my parent's Metallic Blue 1972 Plymouth Barracuda with a 318cu V8. It had the white strip down the side of the body that followed the angles of the beltline of the car, a white vinyl top and Crager rims.

I would love to have a new Challenger with a 4.7l V8 in metallic blue with the 1972 style white strip. I would even consider having the top painted white to simulate the early 70's vinyl.

I came home from the hospital in my Dad's '67 396 Chevelle SS that he bought brand new. It was a 4 speed with a posi-rear, and it had chrome reverse wheels on it. It was also painted in the rare Royal Plum color which was offered for that year only. It was just a 325 horse car,but Mom and Dad both said it ran very well! These pics look better in person! That was awesome,but it jumped out of gear and rolled down an embankment at a shopping center. The car was bent so bad it had to be totalled. He then got the Nova SS I;m washing in my avatar.

In very short succession, a 1954 Chevy 150 two-door sedan, and a 1951 Dodge Meadowbrook four-door. Mom's car was the Dodge (Gray), and Dad's was the Chevy (Navy Blue) I was born in 1956, and I remember they kept these cars right up to the 60's, when dad bought a 2 year old 1958 Chevy Wagon, and mom got a used 1959 Rambler.

I came home from the hospital in a 1974 Buick Electra.

But the first car I ever remember riding in was a 1986 Mercury Sable.

When I made the decision to say hello to the world, my dad took my mom to the hospital in Bob Seger's Black Ferrarri 308. No. Really.

He worked at an import auto repair place in Detroit and had wanted to take some time off around when I was due. Unfortunately, the place was slammed and his boss couldn't let him off. So to make up for it, my dad's boss told him whatever the fastest car they had on the lot was his for the day. He didn't know who's car he had actually taken till the next day.

The actual car I was brought home in was a Rolls of some sort.

In bright orange.

My father drove my highly pregnant mom to the hospital, hazard lights on and finally plowing through the flowerbed at the hospital entrance, because there was an ambulance blocking the road. :-)

Without actually calling my parents to confirm. I believe it was the 59 Impala 4dr hardtop that sat in our backyard for about half my childhood. Remember Dad finally sold it bacause someone wanted the 283 in it. Might have been some other red full size Chevy with a white vinyl top, I have vauge memries of that. The first car I remember riding in is a 74 Chevy Caprice, blue 4dr hardtop.

I was brought home in a mint-green 1954 Ford. And it was only a year old at the time, so yes, I'm relatively ancient. I also remember crying at having to leave this car at the dealership as a trade-in when my parents bought a brand new 1958 two-tone blue Ford Custom 500.

What a ride home from the hospital I had!

1970 Oldsmobile Cutlass S Rallye 350 hardtop. Hurst 4 speed, bucket seats, and a sweet all black interior. Both my parents and I agree we all wish we still had that car.

I also recall driving (on my fathers lap) this car down the driveway, and getting my fingers slammed in the door (although I only really recall laying on the dirty driving writhing in pain and seeing that yellow rear bumper!).

I have told this here before.... My first ride was in 1966 in a red Ford Mustang convertible.. I was 4 or 6 hours old.. from the hospital to home.
My second ride was a few months later in my mothers bicolor Austin-Healey 100S... I have 16mm footage of both... in 1970 she exchanged the Austin-Healey with an yellow MGB.... I remember she would bring me to school in the rain and the car would go in all directions except straight on.

I have a vivid memory of my mom's beige VW squareback. I remember looking up at the perforated white headliner and the white vinyl hand loop thingy. I must have been less than two years old.

1980 Chevy Malibu. 4-door and boxy, the way cars should be....in the summer my mother had to place a beach towel over the steer wheel because it would heat up so violently. The metal seat belts and door handles used to singe my little kid fingers. The interior was like a furnace until winter, when you had to leave the thing to warm up for 15 minutes before you could drive off in her :P

Ha! I have a good one. Mine was nearly new Chevy Corvair. It died in a snow storm on the trip bringing me home from the hospital and wouldn't restart. I guess I was 2 or 3 days old. Dad traded it for a Ford (a Fairlane I think) later that week and has driven Fords ever since.
