I totally agree with you. The 16 is one of my fav cars of all time. There's no reason why there cant be an American Maybach. Actually, Cadillac derives its origins from France so it really does have European DNA.

It was impressive. However, that was 2003. Cadillac was (and is) still building an image for the cars underneath the Sixteen.
What's to compell a buyer to fork out for that much Cadillac? To a European buyer, it'd be like buying a full-sized, rear-drive V8 Hyundai . . .

And for GM to build it now, given the current economic/alt. fuel climate, the Sixteen would just seem "irresponsible", as Lutz said.

The XLR is a waste of space. Taking the Corvette and giving it cardboard box styling does not make an appealing sportscar, which, by the way, doesn't make a good halo car for Caddy anyway.

The Sixteen would've been a halo car.

Apparently they didn't learn their lesson from the Allante. With the amount of $ they spent on this, they could have designed a very nice new Eldorado (and sold a hell of a lot more of them.) What a shame.

I would say the LSA would be the best bet under the bonnet. The gear-head in me wants to believe that everything is better with more horsepower, but let's face it - if the buyer want's a ZR1, they'll buy a ZR1. It's the same money, after all.

And then, Jezzer ripped the car to bits on what is a dubiously shoddy interior for a car in that price range. It -might- have been viable at $75k. Even so, "good 'for the money'" is not an image Cadillac should strive for if it wants to be known as Standard of the World once again.

I did some quick math.

2,000 cars X $100,000 each = $200,000,000

Even if they only make %10 profit on these (the margin is huge on these cars) thats $20,000,000 to the bottom line.

@crevans: Funny, I love the angular look of these.

...but I can't think of a strong enough adverb clause for how vehemently I despise that maroon color.

I think it has a decent chance to help the brand as a halo car, but like Syco says, they need to go completely over the top.

But, knowing GM it'll be either underbuilt for its price point or overpriced for its build quality, marketed to no one, and cited as "evidence" for why performance cars don't sell.

The styling (if you can call it that) of XLRs have always made me wish the term "Flying Brick" wasn't already taken by BMW's earlier K engined bikes...

I just see no reason whatsoever to get one of these over a Corvette.

@reefer: Mystery model between the CTS and DTS? Last I heard that mystery model was the DTS replacement but was not going to have the livery models to go along with it to compete against the now fleet only Towncar Limo and Hearse.

The car will stay as it is with the performance model only being the Vette ZR1 for GM new performance division Chevrolet.

I guess this mean Pontiac could die in the next 5 years. the only saving grace for Buick is its popularity in China with American models and badge engineered Holdens.

What they really need is to bring back the 4.9! But, isn't Cadillac working on a replacement for the Northstar? I suppose it'd make sense (if they were actually making it, and I'm not going delusional on a sugar high) if they introduced it in the next XLR.

@graverobber: It says "Chevrolet hints at a price of around $100,000 and says it will build only about 2,000 per year." Which pretty obviously refers to the ZR1, not the XLR. Why they included this info in an item about the XLR is beyond my comprehension, though.
