		    <description><![CDATA[<P>The Viper is cool, but I gotta agree with those who say it has run its course. Chrysler needs to make money to be a company, and the Viper is not making money.</P>
<P>Plus, all the dealers who keep a Viper in the showroom to sell cars are going to be parking Challengers in that spot. I bet there are a TON more people coming in wanting to see the new Challengers than there are people who want to see Vipers.</P>

About the only interesting memory I have of the Viper is seeing one coming the opposite way on the Alcan Highway in the Yukon. It was hilariously ragged, too. Like several others mentioned, most of what turned me off to the Viper is the plethora of retards it attracts, but the copious amounts of ugly don't help my opinion, either.</p> <p>INTERNETRACECAR</p>]]></description>

<P>The bulk of Japanese cars that pass the new CAFE standards always would have, since theyve always made small cars. The Germans just pay the fines, they have no interest in making their cars pass, pick on them if you want.</P>
<P>In this case, its just not possible to make a 600hp Viper get 35mpg. I suppose you could give it a smaller engine with less power and more fuel economy, but in that case, they might as well just kill it, because its better to burn out than fade away.</P> <p>danio3834</p>]]></description>

		    <description><![CDATA[<p>The dealers killed this thing- a friend and I went into a dealership looking to buy one; my friend well had the means to buy several if he so wanted.  Dealer's first questions: ''do you already have one?''  'No' was my friends reply.  ''well, come back when you have one to trade in.  Ours we sell to basketball stars, football guys, and the like.  If you don't already have one you probably can't afford one..'  What a tool.  Guy better hope he never, ever needs to buy furniture...</p>
<p>And if you've ever seen one of these pull quickly into your rear-view mirror, you'll know why these cars are still relevant.  Its the ONLY car my GN gives way to...<br>

		    <description><![CDATA[<p>I think they want to funnel people into buying lots of Challengers rather than just the low numbers on the Viper. A lot more Vettes are sold than Vipers because the Vette (even the Z06) is a much more streetable car you can drive everyday. <br>
  Sure it's a halo car to get PR, but they lose money on it and it's probably a LOT spent to keep making these in such tiny numbers compared to how many Challenger Hemis they can sell. <br>
   Just to work on a Viper V10 you have to send the mechanics to a special school and spend $10,000 on special tools to service it, and how many dealers shell that out just to get a few in for service.</p>
<p>It's an awesome car, but they've paid a price to get that free advertising and reputation. Personally I'd much rather have a Challenger hemi when the manuals come out than a Viper. I'd drive it a lot more. <P>Think about it people, we wouldn't even have the ZR1 if it wasnt for the Viper. Thats the beauty of competition. And look at the Ferrari 599, it also has 600 hp, so does the Viper. Yet compare the prices!</P>
<P>However, you cant get a 599 Cabrio. Nor can you get a ZR1 Cabrio. But you can get a Cabrio Viper &amp; it costs Less than the hardtop!</P>
<P>Why dont they subcontract it out to a third party?</P>
<P>The Next Gen Viper surely would have been an Amazing vehicle. One designed to trump the ZR1. Now we will never know. And for certain they will never bring it back. 		    <description><![CDATA[<p>Muy next door neighbor is gonna be pissed, he buys a new one of those every year.  But I agree with ESTERN and MOKERS, the time has come.  Cerberus needs the capital spent on vehicles with more volume.  The upward spiral of sticker price on the Viper means that it isn't really a mass market car, and Chrysler doesn't have the luxury to play the exotic car game until they get the basic business back in order.  Not that I won't miss it. 		    <description><![CDATA[<p>What is so funny is that the Viper is VERY profitable, doesn't impact CAFE averages by even a tenth of a percent (too low in volume), and continues to sell as well as it ever has (they didn't build a 2007 model, so last year's sales numbers are misleading).  And you think the Challenger is the savior?  Hardly.  Consider a better source like Bob Lutz (GM Vice Chairman), who recently said, "I think anything in high volumes that falls outside of 35 mpg is out of the question. Translation, niche players like Corvette ZR1s and CTS-V have a future, 50,000-plus-selling Camaros and Challengers -- not so much."  Bottom line? 		    <description><![CDATA[<p>My wife and I once looked at a used (and likely, abused) first-gen Viper roadster on a dealer's lot. I was shocked to find it was just a mammoth engine spinning a pair of wheels very fast with a couple of seats squashed in between. Everything else, up to and including the very health and well-being of the driver, seemed to be of a secondary, even tertiary nature to it. It was awesome.</p>
<p>Here's to hoping that V10 makes its way into the Challenger to offset the sheer amount of pork that vehicle has to sling around. Challenger SRT10 ACR, anyone?</p> <p>DragoonRaven</p>]]></description>

		    <description><![CDATA[<p>I once dyno'd a first-gen Viper with a customer-tuned 2-stage nitrous system and open headers into cherry bombs. It was hard to drive around the parking lot, let alone at speed. It was the most pissed-off sounding car I had ever been around...it was literally daring you to try something funny. "Go ahead punk, let me see what you've got?" It was a scary car.</p>
<p>At the end of the day, it made around 730whp and 950wtq before it blew a 3-foot fireball out of the intake manifolds at 5500rpm. Both air filters caught on fire, all the hoses blew off the intake manifolds and a huge freeze plug was jettisoned in the process.</p>
<p>After I managed to put out the fire the customer checked his nitrous jets, shrugged and said "guess I didn't size them right." I helped him put the freeze plug back in (it idled at 3000rpm without it) and he <i>drove it home!</i></p>
<p>After that experience, I learned that a Viper, no matter what, demands respect, as I've never seen an engine survive a nitrous backfire like that. Fuckin' A.  R.I.P</p> <p>beta.rogan</p>]]></description>

To be honest if I had the funds (And I've looked into this, turns out I'm bloody poor) I'd buy myself a Viper RT/10 or perhaps a GTS. After having gotten the chance to drive one (RT/10) in Sweden of all places, I pretty much fell in love with that damn car.</p>
<p>Brash, brutish, a tough son of a bitch that's a menace to society and liable to kill you? Love it. It's just so bloody American too, no ABS, no traction control, just body panels and a big low slung truck engine in the front shoving a teraton of power to the big fat tyres at the back.</p>

And there is a probably a decent chance that it comes back. The Viper may have saved Chrysler in terms of image a long time ago, but it is past the point of saving anything now. <p>Halo cars can't have a halo effect continuously.</p>
<p>In the early 90s, the Viper was part of a string of new/different/innovative vehicles that Chrysler pushed to say "we're back." It worked great there. Unfortunately, it was never designed for mass production or shared parts with the rest of the line (the way the Vette is).</p>
<p>The purpose of a halo car is to get people who otherwise wouldn't consider your brand to say "<i>That's</i> a Dodge?!". Once "Dodge Viper" is a common term, the effect is dimished.</p> <p><a href="http://robotarmhaiku.blogspot.com">Mad_Science</a></p>]]></description>

If you look at my notes from last October I had stated that some of the following were about to die on the vine including one of the C-Segment vehicles. At that time or near that time period it was announced that the Pacifica was going away as was the Magnum and Commander but that had been known for months. I was mentioning that there would be even more drastic measures and certain lines above and beyond the three I mentioned would eventually be axed or phased out. The Compass/Caliber debacle happened while product development was ongoing. 		    <description><![CDATA[<P>Until recently my neighgors had a pair of Vipers, a '00 roadster and a '99 TNT Kingsnake with 777 (because 666 was not enough) hp. He had a penchant for doing late night donuts in a nearby parking lot. I've never seen so many wide swathes of rubber. Enough to retread all four tires on the Miata I owned at the time. I was sad the day he sold them to put more money into his business. I miss the sound of loopy V-10 idle at 7AM on Sunday morning. I recall it is the only car I have ever driven that made me laugh outloud at the utter wretched excess. And I never got past 3rd gear. Didn't need to. Adios Viper.</P> <p>jbarrow</p>]]></description>

		    <description><![CDATA[<p>Im a big Mopar fan, and I think it is time for it to go. They are losing money on the Viper.  The Challenger is the affordable Halo car that will replace it.  They can build other cars off the LY platform.  The Viper is essentially a hand made car...and that plant is scheduled to close. The new Cafe laws didn't help either.  Also, the Viper's top Engineer is retiring so there is nobody left to fight for the project.</p> <p>Bluegoose</p>]]></description>

		    <description><![CDATA[<p>no big deal...there really isnt anywhere left to go with the viper anyway.  what can you do?  give it mroe power? offer colors that are more absurd than the ones currenlty offered?  at least the interior couldnt possibly get any worse.  more or less, the car still looks almost exactly like it did in 92.  the performance car buying world has realized that the viper has bottomed out and chrysler took the hint.  <br>
I dont believe this has anything to do with CAFE.  they dont sell enough Vipers to offset the mean efficency of their fleet.  <br>
Viper was simply an image enhancer, a pitch tool that salesman could use on the floor to upsell R/T packages on neons and strati.  how many dodge dealerships have you seen that DIDNT have a viper in the showroom?<br>
ford just had tremendous success reviving a sluggish brand by offering the GT.  the GT served its purpose and faded quitely into the night.  <br>
i believe GM is doing the same thing right now with the introduction of the ZR-1.  GM is in terrible financial trouble (the automotive arm of GM is currenlty the only profitable sector; GM's ResCap bond rating was just downgraded to junk) amidst growing public concern that their engineering is incapable of keeping up with European brands.   <br>
Consider this: who is going to walk into a chevrolet delaership with the intention of spending a hundred thousand dollars?  (i believe this is why the phaeton failed...it would have sold much better rebadged as an audi) there will be many sales in the first year...buyers who have deep emotional attachment to the corvette brand, but once those people are satisfied, i dont beleive the car will sell based on its own merits.  have i gotten off track?  ithink so...</p> <p>i drive a dodge stratus!!!</p>]]></description>

		    <description><![CDATA[<p>long story short; this is probably the sifting through the brands, giving each one its core definition of the brand, and then growing on that. <br>
300c = Chrysler / Challenger = Dodge / Wrangler = Jeep.</p>
<p>I think DCx has been changing its design language so much, people don't have time to adjust, and the sales numbers reflect that.</p>

		    <description><![CDATA[<P>Cerberus should be killing the garbage that's actually sinking the company, not the cars people want to buy from it. Halo vehicles are good for brand image and create enthusiasm for the company like the Viper. Like the Corvette to GM the Viper is a more vital product than they think it is.</P>
<P>The Compass, Patriot, and Commander must go. They should have redesigned the Pacifica (the original crossover) instead of bringing out the crappy-looking and half-baked Journey. The Sebring, Caliber and Avenger need new interiors ASAP. The Durango needs to be redesigned ASAP or dropped. The HHR proves Chrysler should have redesigned the PT Cruiser instead of letting it rot.</P>

<P>Let's just content ourselves that this marks the beginning of a shift to smarter performance cars. Instead of 3500 lbs, 500 horsepower, and A mile per gallon, let's shoot for 2100 lbs, 300 hp, 30 mpg.</P>

		    <description><![CDATA[<p>As a Mopar fan, i'm kind of torn here. After reading all the comments here. I can see the point of removing Viper. Re-establishing Dodge as a new brand, I just hope it does so in a good way, or the Viper will have died in vain.</p>
<p>I want RWD back for ChryCo, dammit. Screw this cheap and easy stuff.</p>
<p>Easy for me to say, i know:<br>
Keep Dodge as Muscle/Go-fast cars and the usual, capable trucks. Keep Chrysler turn up the heat on the "luxury" part of the Luxury brand in the trio. Keep Jeep as what it has been for decades - the offroad wonder of the world.</p>
<p>I almost want to say add a small brand ala' Scion for the cheaper small cars, tuners/hybrids. Hornet, Demon, Zeo, [something to replace PT], Caliber 'twins', etc. Although I would NOT recommend bringing back Plymouth, because it was remembered as a muscle-car brand; maybe AMC, because they were the monetarily cheaper version of the other ChryCo brands, bang-for-the-buck category I guess.</p> <p><a href="http://suzq044-chopartist.deviantart.com">suzq044</a></p>]]></description>

		    <description><![CDATA[<P>@mad_science right there w/you man! the magnum is a fun car to drive.. has exceptional storage space... (when compared to the rest of their 'sedans') and it keeps those of us over 6' tall from hitting our head on the back window ever time the gas is touched (300C and charger....) when sitting in the back seat.</P>
<P>the traction control works somewhat how you want it to in nasty weather.. and if it is switched off.. it almost works like it isn't there... until 3-5 seconds into your drift/burnout... but disconnect the circuit and it's gone... and wonderful... though... your tires are gone shortly there after...</P>
<P>i say keep the magnum.. (which i know is pretty much dead) but i love me some wagons!</P>
<P>the viper made my jaw drop when i was a teen (when it was first coming out) and my first ride was damned fine.. but nothing that hasn't been equalled by a number of imports with low budget mods to power and handling...</P>
<P>the viper is/was sexy. and a good idea... but i understand that it isn't financially viable for the failing company that made my SN (aside from the 't'... that is a play on words for how i look.... long brown hair and full beard.. ((my friends tell me i look like jesus))) they just can't seem to get ahead in recent years...</P>
<P>i had always hoped that the daimler buy out would be good.. but it just seemed to drag MB down... aside from a few wonderful machines that were given strong ass engines on stable platforms.. (like the magnum... my dad bought one (the one i've driven) b/c it is essential an E-class wagon with a lot more power...)</P>
<P>always hope that the mergers bring the best for any company.. even if it means spending a alot of time researching what came from where... there always seem to be 'little' "diamonds in the rough"</P>
<P>i think the post from a day or two ago w/the rebadging issue covered a lot of what i think on this issue... would love to see the euro and australian "american" brands brought to america....</P> <p>chrystlubitshi</p>]]></description>

<P>Even two years ago, there was a 210 days supply of the Viper. It served its purpose by being a loss leader and puffing up a sorry image Chrysler had in the late 80's. The Viper did something else as well. It served as a testbed for the future product development organization that spread through the rest of Chrysler. Smaller groups, ad hoc meetings and a get it done attitude. This was based from Francois Castaing who headed up Chrysler Engineering at the time and was the early leader of Renault Racing's return to F1 back in the 70's. As well, if you read my comments from October 9th of last year, the Genesis "fix" was in the works even then. Now how come a lowly blogger like me would know that....</P>

<p>Cerberus isn't in the business of managing a car company and it's pretty obvious that the U.S. market is no longer large enough to swallow the production capacity of GM, Ford and Chrysler with the foreign makes (namely Toyota) being the new de facto standard here.</p>

As we all say every time something shitty like this happens, cost-cutting and the goal of a more civilized vehicle creep in when you don't grab the accountants and their Wall Street Journals and throw then out of the the room.</p>
<p>For all the lusty desires heaped on the V-10, the original Viper was distinctive for that wild front clip hood. A real knuckle buster to open and close for sure, but drop-dead sexy. I've been told that doghouse cost more than the 8-liter beast engine underneath it.</p>
<p>The car originally was awful to drive, and while the 2nd gen was a little less awful to drive it was a whole lot less sexy.</p>

I hate to hate a car based off who drives them, but with certain cars there's no escaping it.  My wife refuses to let me pull the trigger on a '05 CTS-V simply because "old people drive Cadillacs".</p>

<p>It sucks to see it go, but in a lot of ways it makes sense. When the Viper first came out, Vettes were still a joke, and neither Ferrari nor Porsche had mind-blowing power (at least not at the Viper's price).</p>
<p>The world's a different place now, where it's not good enough to have rips-your-balls-off torque attached to a joke of an interior for $100k.</p>
