It was a Nissan 240SX commercial from the 90's, with two 240's, one red, one black, drifting in unison on a wet, twisty road, as the song "Me And My Shadow" plays in the background. Now A1 GTI spots from the early 80's were pretty damn cool and cemented the idea that they were about the coolest cars, regardless of price, available. That Audi spot mentioned yesterday with the racing footage was damn cool except for the editing that would show the cars about to do something really cool and then cut to a different uh, help me out here ad guys, scene.

artistic wise the honda si commercial with all the groovy rotoscoping action going on, but id have to say the tunderbird commercial when it like first came out. thi sguy pulls up to the new t-bird in a ferrari (i think it was) tells his gal to step out to flag them, the ferrari revs off filling the screen with smoke, when it clears off the t-bird is just idling and the gal hops in and they take off.

In 1968, AMC had a TV ad for the then-new Javelin where a meek, milquetoast man was driving his new Javelin, and was being challenged to race by hot cars, motorcycles, etc. He keeps turning down the challenges with lines like "I have a bowl of goldfish in the back seat". Finally, we see him cringe when a parking attendant peels out and burns rubber in the Javelin.

Back in the early 1970s, the National Lampoon folks did a spoof on DD&B's floating VW ad, using the same photo and the tagline "If Ted Kennedy Drove a Volkswagen He'd Be President Today". Anne Beatts wrote it. Since the ad used the VW logo, there were threats of litigation and the ad was first razor bladed out of existing copies and then left out of subsequent reprints.

My web research indicates that it was published in the Nat Lamp's Encyclopedia of Humor, but I seem to recall it first being published in one of their Life Magazine parodies, and that a friend was able to buy an original copy before they were pulled off the shelves.

For absolute nutbarrishness I would go with the Grace Jones ad, which seems surprisingly appropriate both for Citroen and for the CX, and for absolute radness i would go with the Starion ad. I regularly show all of my friends that ad and they all laugh and quote it. I only have showed one person (another car nut, though no Jalopnik) the Ferrari ad. Boy, that Starion ad is a work of art. I should write a paper about it. Now all I have to do is find a class where a treatise on the nature of an old Starion ad is applicable and relevant.

It's an advertisement that may never have aired in the states but Continental Tyres produced an amazing ad featuring a BMW sliding around on the roof of a tower block, literally to within a centimetre of the edge. It had to be done in South Africa as it was the only country mad enough to allow them to do it. Amazingly it was done in one take.

SPORTTRUCK!

I'm also a big fan of the SNL car for OCDs. It has a sink in the center console for you to wash your hands 50 times while driving, and an unlimited amount of buttons to constantly push. And I believe Will Ferrell was the actor in it, so it's wonderfully overstated. Not to mention the fact that the exterior was a 3rd gen Taurus.

A video doesn't seem to exist anywhere on the interwebs, but the "Me and My Shadow" commercial for the Nissan 240SX. I believe it aired only once, during the Super Bowl, in the early '90s.

It was a white 240SX followed by a black one, doing perfectly choreagraphed slides, spins, etc. Great video.

That, and just about any Porsche commercial in the last decade or so.

There was a great commercial for the Goodyear Eagle F1 tires several years ago. It featured Derek Bell driving four supercars on a winding mountain road. It had a very "Top Gear" feel to it. I couldn't find any video of it, unfortunately. That Shell Ferrari F1 is great, too.
