I remember a specific time at a BMW dealership when i was reading the sticker of a z4 and looking at the "parts content" which was suprisingly high. Thats the thing. I dont think i would try to buy a car just becouse it was made in America or not. Mercedes makes GLs/MLs and our beloved Rs in Alabams, BM makes x5s and the z4 in South Carolina, and a lot of GM cars are made in Canada. But their parts content are from all over the place.

However, our American designed and made products do not fit in with the Korean (or almost the rest of the worlds) marketplace. There is no other place that really will take our best selling vehicles, our Pickup Trucks, due to space limitations, fuel consumption, or the fact that their commercial vehicles are smaller, and carry more cargo!

Reminds me of the early 80's when our car manufacturers complained that Japan wasn't buying enough American Made vehicles. Well, one reason was the fact that we didn't even try and make RIGHT HAND DRIVE models. More than have of the driving population in the world now operated Right Hand Drive product.

I'm with you! Used to be, seeing the new models at the Texas State Fair in October was a big deal. I recall not that long ago seeing an '07 which was released in very late-'05. Um, so what, when you sell it in '07, with 40K miles on it, it has suffered no time-based depreciation?!

Good friend bought an '06 Sonata new. Very nice inside and out, strong V6, overall nice fit and finish for a $23k car. Thing has spent almost as much time at the dealer as in his driveway. Nothing major but plenty of minor issues (AC, poor paint and trim fit, electrical niggles, etc). Dealer gives a service loaner every time but I'm left thinking Hyundai ain't quite at Suzuki/Mitsubishi level yet, and a looooooong way from Toyota. Color me unimpressed.

If they can cause Lexus to wobble... (cough Veracruz cough)...

The bigger question is... is everyone else catching up to the benchmarks, or are the benchmarks not pulling far enough ahead?
