-Toyota Avalon: the previous Avalons were great cars, but they weren't competing directly with the big American barges. The new Avalon matches them in size and surpasses them in refinement, even if the overall reliability is on the lower side for Toyota.
-GM 1/2-Tons: while GM still has a way to go before it's competing with the Japanese in quality, these new trucks are surprisingly efficient and well-built. The primitive OHV needs to be laid to rest, but nonetheless, good job GM.
-Buick Grand National: every year leading up to the glorious GNX was an improvement, and the rest is history.
-Toyota Prius: the first-generation Prius was...less than spectacular. The current Prius, while not quite adrenaline-stirring, is an incredible vehicle overall, and proof that efficiency doesn't have to mean low-budget econoboxes with rough rides and cramped interiors.

Saaj

i dont think you guys get it, i think they are looking for a one year huge improvement. YJ > TJ or 95 to 96 takoma are big improvements, but look at the CJ7 to YJ or TJ to the new Wrangler. Every progression of the Toyota truck was just as big a deal or more than 95-96. there are bigger ones, especially if you don't look at vehicle names and just look at another vehicle that replaced it. take Hondas sports car the prelude arguably replaced by the S2000, now THATS huge! And if the car has to keep the same name, its not really going to work because usually when a huge change happens, the car gets a new name. In that case there's hundreds. Dodge omni to shadow to neon to callaber, those are big improvements. Ford Tempo to contour to focus, Chevrolet cavaler to cobalt, there's at least one from every manufacturer. If a car is a pile of crap they always give it a new name when they make a vastly improved replacement. You also cant say stuff like the new mini is way better than the old mini, there's 7500 years between them. The new beetle is way better than the old one, no shit. But if i have to pick a car that had the same name before and after i have to pick the Pontiac grand prix from 87 to 88. This doesn't seem like much now and I'd also like to point out that I hate GM, but this was one of the hugest improvements in a single vehicle in history. The car went from a huge pile of crap built on 1960's technology, 305ci V8 that was totally gutless, rear wheel drive radius frame platform, solid rear axle, SLA front suspension. From underneath this car was a 68 Malibu. It got bad gas mileage, rode and handled like a truck and was unreliable. In 88 it changed to a high tech uni-body, fully independent suspension, modern FF layout with a new modern V6, multiport fuel injection, even high tech stuff like ABS and HUD display and distributer less ignition. In 88 it won motor trend car of the year and Pontiac went from selling 17088 grand prix in 87 to 76723 in 88 and on to 128073 in 1990. It was a Daytona 500 pace car, pikes peak hill climb car and put Pontiac back into the number 3 sales slot, from 15 years prior. You could even get a special model grand prix turbo STE with 205hp modified by McLaren. The new one still kind of sucked, but that's the biggest improvement I can think of. Put some thought into your posts you lazy bastards.

car_bum

I'd agree that the Model T to Model A transformation is probably the most momentous, as they were the best-selling cars of the period. Someone who can drive a modern car can drive an "A," but if you jump into a "T" and put your foot on the right pedal you'll just engage reverse.
But I feel that the Jalopnik zeitgeist isn't about what change is most momentous-- it's about what change is most awesome. Tire-smokingly, hoontastically awesome, and to me that means power. My nomination, therefore, is about power. Not just horsepower, but staying power: The 1954 Chevy "Blue Flame" six being replaced by the 1955 Small-Block V8. I'm a fan of inline sixes, but I can't ignore the engine that launched a million hot rods and turned untold numbers of tires into smoking piles of shredded rubber.

Armand Bengle

The Honda Accord. I used to have an 87, and it was a great, peppy, and reliable car. However, I recently drove my father's 2001 and it was fantastic. Tons of power, nice comfortable suspension that was surprisingly good in the corners, and a nice interior.

The Elantra also improved leaps and bounds from 90's versions to the 00's version. I have a feeling that it is becoming the new civic (which incidentally, I would like to nominate for worst change going from a nice, small, agile car with a beautiful rear suspension, to a big, bloated sedan with a torsion bar. If you've driven the 90's version, and loved it, I don't recommend trying todays version. It handles like a barge.)

Evil-Jeremy
