"The heads' unique two-tiered internal construction segregates the intake route, the chain-driven DOHC valvegear, and water jacket."

"It was totally clean-sheet," Freese recalled. "Starting with very rough sketches, our path to every technical solution began with a 'what if.' We ended up avoiding traditional approaches."

very cool

maybe they can acid-proof the fuel carrying pipes and injectors so we can run veggie oil? the veggie oil likes higher injection pressures that the new diesel will be running..

wheels OF satan!

-But: just Insane creative repurposing given the constraint the designers received.

-If no hood scoop or really good e-bay ventilation though, looks like a self-destructing engine with a turbo to help accelerate that process.

This is awesome. They need to put this in the mid size SUVs too. I bet it could get mid 20s MPG all day long. For those complaining about the cost of the Diesel option in a new pickup: yes they are on average $5000 more new but a diesel pickup is worth on average $8000 more then a comparable gas truck 3 years down the road and will last longer too. Stuff like this could make Max Bob a hero. People still want vehicles with all the room they just want a little better MPG.

DanWarner

Dunno. . . . this is reminding me a bit of the wonderful advances GM made in the early sixties: OHC-6, unibody, aluminum V-8, torque-tube in their mid-size cars. Turbocharging with water injection. The Corvair. Does no one remember that the way the ended the decade (Front engine/rear drive, live-axle, pushrod, iron block and head, massive cubes) wasn't the way they started? GM has some real engineering talent and enormous resources. They just don't seem to have the will to stick with an innovation long enough to perfect it for the market.

It does, and I have to wonder about what they're going to put that engine into. They've done some interesting work to minimize plumbing and put the exhaust/turbos in the V8's valley, but how are they going to deal with all that heat right on top of the engine? It might work in a ute that has room under the hood, but not in a car.

Well, from what I know about modern diesel engines (remember, I work for a Truck Company), that big black device sitting on the front of the engine looks like a gigantic EGR valve. This is one of the tricks to keep the Modern Diesel clean.

A little story though. When the Mercedes Sprinter came into the US (as a Freightliner or a Dodge), they all ran well for the 2002 and 2003 model years. The 2004 was introduced with an electronic EGR (Placed on the front of the engine) to control the stricter emission standards, that part failed in over 70% of their vans. When it failed, the engine went into 'limp' mode, and would not turn faster than 1500 rpm, and you could not go faster than 45 MPH.

The moral to this story? I hope GM gets it right before they go to market.

UDMan

For the time being I'll have to make do with a 6.6L. Impressive, the same numbers at 70% the displacement. If it's anything like the current generation of dmax engines, it's likely underrated and could be programmed for more boost and more power. On top of that, with 19-20mpg today, I could see this getting 25mpg or more, which is darned impressive.

I'd also like to see a 6 cylinder, in a decent small truck, none of this colorado nonsense (but a ute wouldn't be too shabby either)

Now if we could only get greater availability of biodiesel...

loosse
