On the alternative fuels episode this was actually the last type of car to be shown, by an old guy and not by a 15 year old. They did use compressed air to move the pistons, but at the time you had to use another compressor to put the air in the car as the fuel. They were of course considering making the car have the capabilities to compress it's own air so it would never have to refuel.

Steam engines are much better suited to using compressed air for motive power.
