No question...Starion.

I wanted one since I was 11...finally got one when I was 21 (a 1987 model). I only had it for about 4 years. Dropped massive cash on it (for the time) and never did get the front air dam fixed or the dents that the drunken teenage previous owner was kind enough to throw in for free. It had all kinds of problems (most of which were eventually solved by swapping in an '89 ECU about 6 months before I got rid of th old girl). But when she was running, man did she run. I owned her during the absolute height of the 'rice boy' days of the late 90s early 00s. So much fun, smoking riced out civics with a bone stock, cranky, and frequently leaky, Starion. My sweet girl from Japan...

But all good things...

I had to sell her. To the state actually. She wouldn't pass smog so I filed for the CAP program and the gov paid me $1000 to have her sent to the yard. I was sad she wouldn't run free anymore, but in a way happy that I got to put her to bed (I kept the shift knob though), knowing her parts would help a bunch of other Starions bring delight to people for years to come. The money went towards a year spent in Japan learning to speak Japanese. As it happens I lived in Aichi-ken, birth place of the Starion, in a little town called Okazaki, home of the worlds only Starion museum. It seemed a fitting trade off. Particularly considering it wasn't too long before I met another sweet Japanese girl (or 10...though one in particular);P

My one regret (aside from returning to the states) is that I'll never get to cruise with BOTH my J-girls at once. Ah well...can't have everything.

@respawn: Actually I see prices dropping fast for US cars and EU cars are for sale more than the usual 2 days. Hype is almost over and (from what I think) people (in general) are in need of money. Two years ago the average SR5 was sold for at least $2k, nowadays not more than $1k and I see GTS-es for sale around $2k.

banpei

Good (but very spoiled, only child) friend from high school got a brand new Conquest for graduation or a year afterwords. This after driving his dad's used early model 300Z. That Conquest was the biggest POS. He had something about the rear subframe go bad and the car ended up scraping the rear tires going around curves and bottoming out bad. As he was a 20year old yankee hippy-wanna-be in a university in a large city in a southern state, the local dealer claimed the parts would take 6 months from Japan, etc. and warranty work would take 3 months etc. So it turns out that my friends' blue blood parents end up knowing some lady who's husband is somehow pals with Lee Iacocca. They bitch about the car (which they were still paying for) to her and hubby at a cocktail party. Hubby calls Lee the next day. Lee personally calls dealership principle and says service this car even if you have to remove parts from a brand new one for sale on the lot. The dealership calls my friend up and he brings the car in and receives a free loaner to drive for the two days it takes them to fix the car completely free of charge. The way my friend told it he walked in and every person in the dealer ship addressed him as "Mr." Smith and kissed his butt from one side to the other. He got the car back with a full tank of gas, washed and detailed.

He'd later bash the car up bad (only the roof was undented), it would have engine bearing trouble ($2k and then a recall on the bearings 1 month later) and other stuff would go wrong, that his parents eventually got a tax write off by donating the carcass to the local vocational technical school.

econobiker

@banpei: Actually, the current cost is the worst part about the car. I bought mine before the whole Initial D/Dorifto craze made the car wildly popular. I also bought it from some rednecks in small town Louisiana who probably think that anime is what I call my mom's sister. Grand total: $300. Fast forward several years and I didn't have the money to work on the car after Hurricane Katrina killed the starter, so I sold it to a friend of a friend. I cut him an excellent deal and still made a profit. Off a car that was involved in a flood. (And for the record, the car itself wasn't dead, just the starter. If you push started the car, it would still run and drive all day long.)

I would love to have another, but they're just not worth $2K to me.

respawn

This is a tough one. Having previously owned a 1986 AE86, that's where my heart lies. But, I also know just what level of hell is involved in building up one of those... and it's really not that bad. Unless you're on the hunt for junkyard parts cars for interior parts and such, aftermarket mechanicals are plentyful. The only thing that makes this car hellacious is that most people that own them are 16 year old drifter wannabes without the budget to spare for that Quaiffe diff or those Koni shocks. The drivetrain is also very tough and reliable. I overheated the $#!+ out of my 4AGE (I was hoping it would blow so I could justify a rebuild with boost) and the damn thing still didn't die. There are guys actively racing on their original motor with over 200k on the clock.

But this is Project Car Hell we're talking about here. The Starion is more rare and less popular. Plus, it's a Mitsubishi, so it comes complete with their legendary unreliability. ;) Hands down, the Starion for the hellacious win.

(Although I would personally rather have another AE86 to play around with.)

respawn

@MURILEE MARTIN: think you mix up two things here... Ever seen musclecars at LeMans? (those Corvettes don't count: they are race-prepped) And we're talking here about project cars, not race prepped cars.

Besides that: sub-$500? Perhaps you can find a EE80 for that money, but you seriously need a lot more than that for an AE86.

banpei

Did own a 85 SR5 (converted to GTS) up till this summer and I must say that the car is a bit underpowered, but nowadays I see swaps with from the supercharged 4AGZE to F20 (S2000), SR20 (Silvia S15) or even 7MGTE (Celica Supra) which makes the car a compact musclecar!

On its own it may not be very hellish, it's a toyota after all. But there's plenty of engine mod/swap hell potential. You could do the MX-5 piston swap, or maybe the 4A-GE out of an AE111, how about the F20 from an S2000. Or you could source one of the TRD race engines, getting that cleared for the street would be hell. If you wanted to be really weird you drop a 13B from an RX-7 in there, or better yet the 20B tri-rotor from a Cosmo.

something_unique_and_descriptive

Super Starion man, the period key is here: "."

Oh my oh my.

I have many a time commented how the AE86 is among my faves as a "drivers car". Because it is just that. Nothing more, nothing less, a swift, rwd platform for bare-knuckle driving. No Power this or that, only slightly servo'd brakes and light weight.

But.

I'd pretty much forgotten about the Starion. The Japanese Capri! With the available 2.7 litre I4 (Europe at least) and those '80s shoulder-pad wheelarches, available rear screen slats and the blackest of black paint. OMFG I <3 it.

And I wouldn't even entertain the notion of keeping that engine in it. Oh no, this would be the home for two turbochargers, probably with a 2JZ-GTE Supra engine.

Or if I was feeling really dirty and perverse, maybe a 20B Mazda rotary..... No, that's just sick.

Rust-MyEnemy
