@SJONESRONES: If only it were that simple!

VW has a hard enough time staying price competitive with US- and Asian-built vehicles at a time when US $1.50 will get you a 1-euro cup of coffee.

Considering that the price of diesel fuel in the USA is relatively higher than gasoline on average, and the price of a diesel powertrain costs more than the equivalent horsepower gasoline powertrain, and the majority of the North American public has no experience nor interest whatsoever in something that they have no former experience (as shown by 20+ years of dismal diesel car sales), there has actually been very little incentive for ANY european manufacturer to exert themselves to import diesels to North America. They can sell every diesel they make in Europe for a vastly greater profit margin.

Jeep is apparently inept at everything they do these days, so what did you expect?

Thank goodness Honda found the courage to introduce a diesel. Because diesel powertrains cost more, Honda is correctly putting this in their higher-end Acura line. This is good marketing for them, because it will preserve their eco-goodness image while simulating a market for diesels in the USA.

Meanwhile, Stupid Useless Vehicle drivers should be petitioning VW to get that 40+ mpg diesel sportwagen [www.hybridcars.com/news2/volkswagen-unveils-clean-diesel-jetta-sp....html] to North America as soon as they can, and offer to pay the exchange rate premium. My guess is that it will be a wise investment for the next decade.

Honda, remember the Accord wagon and the Civic hatchback? We'd like them back. Once you get your clean diesels into distribution, you might toss a few diesels into in these long-missed car configurations too.

my favorite car is a motorcycle

Automakers seem seem to have trouble when it comes to intoducing diesel vehicles in the US market. First, VW blows its sizeable diesel lead by not developing compleient diesels for '05, '06 and '07 (and well see on '08 -- their delivery schedule has already slipped).

Jeep seemed to crack the code by offering their CRD in the more entry level Libery (it sold well), but then shot itself in the foot by dumping the option when the new regs kicked in and then failing to offer the compliant 3.0 CRD mill in the Liberty once it became available.

Jeep compounded the error by putting the 3.0 into the most expensive trim of the Grand Cherokee, pricing it out of the budgets of diesel enthusiasts (a situation they have since remedied).

Honda looks poised to pull a "Jeep" by installing their diesel in an expensive vehicle, rather than putting it into their Accord. The "right" buyers won't have the access and sales numbers will be lower than they could be.

sjonesrones

I'm thinking TSX (euro-Accord) as well. I'm waiting to hear the specs on Nissan's diesel Maxima that should be out in a year or two... but I do like that Jetta Sportwagen as well. Usually too much choice is a bad thing, but not this time.

TBlueMax

When I was living in Spain a couple of years ago some guy gave me a ride in his diesel Accord (so it looked like TSX). That thing hauled, and was quiet and smooth to boot. That being said, the 50-state diesels will likely be quite different, but it's nice to see some diesel options finally making their way over. I'd love to see this engine in the next TSX or RL. Now we just need Audi to follow sibling VW's suit and release a diesel and we'll have some major diesel luxo players in the US.

awright

Okay, so we'll have to wait another year for this engine to show up in a Honda-branded model, which may or may not be the Accord? Hmm. If the Acura model is the yet-to-debut Mk. II TSX, and said new TSX looks and drives halfway decent, I might consider it.
Otherwise, my oil-burner money might be going to a Jetta Sportwagen after all...

Tomsk the red-nosed reindeer
