I truly believe that great visionaries and leaders do not merely do things for themselves and their near and dear ones. I truly believe that a great person like Ratan Tata is sincere and he actually wants to elevate an ordinary person from bi to quad. Mind it: it is a big shift in your lifestyle. Most of those driving besides you in their long imported cars do not see you as insects and worms any more, but they at least see you as cats and dogs. But who cares; as long as one has some extra comfort and does not need to get drenched in rain any more.
So before I do some forecast, let me assure you that I am not a pessimist, but just acting on the pure probability based on experience.
What will fail Tata dream is the government of India followed by the respective states. In some states the car won't even cost what it is intended due to heavy taxes. In Karnataka, one can only die without paying a "death tax", rest is all heavily taxed.
There will be heavy increase in traffic and of course roads cannot be improved. We cannot tell Mr. Ambani not to go ahead with his 4000 Crore house and spend that money on roads of Ahmadabad. The government will not work on providing better roads, but instead work on measures like increasing fuel surcharge, road tax and toll, etc.
The fuel cost will shoot up in response to additional demand. I am not saying that the rate per barrel of crude oil in Dollars will have an affect due to a new car in market. No! A liter of gasoline costs approx 0.55 USD in Kuala Lumpur, while slightly inferior one costs approx 1.42 USD in Bangalore. Where does the difference come in from?
Let me cuts it short. Tata is of course trying to light up the stove in our homes to make our cooking a pleasure, but the successive governments have spread so much of gunpowder around that only what we can expect is "BOOOOOOOOOOM!."

Tata Nano is far better than those gas guzzling SUVs made by the Detroit 3. Tata Nano clearly defines the term OPTIMUM, the word that Detroit has never really understood! That it returns 30+ mpg and complies with Euro IV emission norms, it is excellent.

Part of the credit also goes to Bosch for their inputs in the engine.

It's time Americans woke up and started adopting the term OPTIMUM in their lives. No one needs a 3 litre 8 cylinder engine to transport one man around the city! That is not MACHO, that is STUPID, and that is what many Americans are - some are sensible though. If the Americans did not migrate to better fuel efficient cars, like the Tata Nano, then one fine day, forget about golf carts, USA will have to turn back to bullock carts!

That will drive the price up another $1000 at least, for the Indian version. To meet US minimums, figure at least another $4000, lower mileage, bigger engine, and replace those 45 mph bearings.
It probably will meet the demands of India and other developing, densely populated countries, replacing the venerable 2-wheel scooter with a weatherproof car, but in the US and Europe, the needs of the less well-to-do are served better by the $2500 used car- which will likely still outlast the Nano.
Undoubtedly, other manufacturers will be very interested in Tata's cost-cutting methods, which may or may not ultimately lead to savings for consumers, but a cheap "Peoples' Car" for the US and Euro markets will have to be a completely "clean sheet of paper" design- probably by Hyundai, Daewoo, Diahatsu, or Kia...

both in india as well as US and I cannot help thinking that the way tata motors is going is
correct.

first of all driving a new small car is a far better experience than a old car
The plan is to first sell it in india get some money back
put in more research and then package it to the devloped world in a few years
we all know that the prices of gas has increased many bounds in US
and contrary to india we need the car for almost everything.
I spend a lot more on gas here than in india
but the current standard of this car is far lower than people are used to in US

it will take a few years of research and some increase in gas prices for people in US to
shun their wasteful habits and start using more fuel effecient cars

Overall i think they will start with developing countries and move upwards.
After they have acquired the jaguar and lands they can also have a distribution network ready
in some of these countries
If anybody has any doubts that TATA can enter developed countries
please note that their steel and software wing are already successful in almost every country

This style of vehicle, regardless of how many peole here in the US fight it, will likely wind up being the defacto commuter car within 20 years due to morons driving 12 MPG pickups and SUV's to work and back, solo.

The first time I saw a Smart Car, I would have bought one, purely for commuting, but they're not sold here...STILL!!!!!!! I know, very soon, but this was five or six years back.

This car would lower my yearly gasoline expenditures from nearly $4000 a year to around $1500 a year. It would almost PAY FOR ITSELF in a single year JUST in gasoline savings. FREE CAR plus saving $2500 a year in gasoline.

GOD DAMN IT SOLD. Bring em on. Will hold me over till until we beat the NIMH patent out of the hide of Chevron so I can have my Electric Car.

I do not CARE how slow it is as long as it can do 60mph and my 6'4" frame can fit I AM FREAKING SOLD. I do not even care if it takes 30 seconds to get to 60mph.

While it is true that the car will not qualify US safety requirements, it is only because it is designed for Indian roads where driving over 40-50 in a city is a dream that will never come true :)

This thing is just 1/6th the price. I drove a smartcar in the US when it was on tour this fall and it's really cool, much larger inside than it looks.

i hope they bring it to the US, but how do they make it for $2,500? Don't US manufactures spend more than that on labor alone to build a car?

30HP won't sell in the US. The reason the 70HP metro was introduced was because consumers felt that 55HP was too low and were willing to forgo a couple of MPG for the 70HP.

I'd buy it. I just like more mileage, and the price is right.

The Bad: While the car has a top end of around 75mph, the wheel bearings take a real beating at anything over 45mph.

Of course, if you drive in India, going more then 45mph might just be a dream.

Personally, I'd love to see them for sale in the US. Currently shoping around for a car that gets good milage, and the cheapest new cars are over $13k. $2.5k will get me something 10 years old, and I think that the Nano will last just as long.

They have, hands down, the most INSANE drivers on earth in that country. The lines on the road aren't even suggestions. I remember opening the door of one of those crazy cabs to projectile vomit on the streets after having about 10 too many Kingfisher beers there, and immediately being yanked back by my friend so as not to be decapitated.

It will, however, be interesting to see this car on Top Gear playing car soccer (I know, I know, "football").

I'm sorry, I love the idea of a People's Car for India but this thing is hideous and with Tata's legendary emphasis on safety and build quality (comparable to Britney's emphasis on childcare and sobriety), this shouldn't be the answer to getting the people of India of scooters.

Finally something that moves BACK to the affordable range and away from all the momentum towards green&overly-stuffed-with-safety-features.

How fast does one need or can one go in very congested areas? Not very fast. So, you don't need more than basic motivation. This will be great for all those folks that CAN'T walk a block, etc. (though YOU might be healthy, cocky, and overly proud, not everyone is).

The car for the rest of us that see it as just basic A-to-B, no need for one-upping the Kumars, and can't afford to tow the green line.
