You want a small, open-air 4x4, go buy a Jeep (preferably pre-JK, but that's just my anti-minivan-engine side talking). This thing won't see production without being totally castrated, and the only people who'll be caught dead driving it will be soccer moms trying to hang on to their carefree years.

It is true that Hummer has become a sort of parody of itself, but this could sort that out. They need to be more utilitarian though; it would ward off all the softies that buy them for the image. They also need to kill off the H2, since it's an overweight, ugly pig of a car. The H3 looks the part and I'd be confident in it having reasonable off-road ability.

Unfortunately for the UK market, they've seen fit to ruin its looks and off-road ability with the addition of black plastic wheel-arch extensions, side steps and a big under-run bar across the back. I particularly don't understand the under-run bar. You occasionally see them on pickups, but no other off-road car has one fitted.

Anyway, this is what Hummer should be all about. Good luck to them. I hope that when the Defender replacement finally comes about, it looks as purposeful as this.

Basically, I wanted soup. I want - I really want - the H2 line (H2, H3, H(n)...) be hot, delicious chicken soup. Instead, what we get is a large bowl of pee. It's yellow, and it is certainly hot, but it's pee. The Hx is that steaming bowl of urine served up with noodles, veggie bits, and chunks of real chicken floating in it, all set with napkin and spoon. Forgive me for complaining, but it's still pee and I still don't want it.

@danms6: exactly my point. If this thing wasn't wearing a Hummer badge, I think there'd be a bunch of people here thinking it was a brilliant production rock-crawler concept. But Hummer has become synonymous with grossly overweight, fuel-sucking, environmentally unfriendly, overpriced trucks that are used more to get attention than to get offroad. I don't know exactly how Hummer gets rid of this image, but if I were the brand manager for Hummer I'd make some changes by; 1) only offering vehicles in matte black 2) not offering any leather seats, air conditioning, or fancy options at all 3) not allowing the vehicles to be made into limousines 4) making sure there is a pickup in the line and 5) not promoting the vehicle by product placement in rap videos.

Hummer has the most ironic image problem ever. They set out to capitalize on the tough off-road adventure draw that SUVs have, but with their marketing and target audience have created an image as being the vehicle for people who buy SUVs for all the wrong reasons.

As a current (and past) Wrangler and two-time 4Runner owner, I can't deny that the H3 as well as this concept actually have some attractive features. But unfortunately, at this point I could almost never bring myself to purchase a Hummer on account of the stigma.

I'm hoping the upcoming H4 (?) Wrangler competitor will force Jeep to up the ante a bit with the latest JK Wranglers. The stupid minivan V6 just isn't cutting it, especially in 4-door. Small V8 or turbo-diesel, please.

Re: FJ Cruiser...
While no beauty contest winner (and I don't think SUVs should be), the FJ cruiser does a pretty good job of re-embodying the 1st-gen 4Runner. It's unfortunate that they used styling and a name that invites comparison to the FJ-40s of old, when in reality it's as close to my beloved 2-door 4Runners as you can get in a new car. I can only hope they make the drop-top concept they've been showing for a while now.

I'm sorry, if I'm going to drive something that looks like it can take over a small sub-saharan country on it's own, it actually needs to perform like it can. The current hummer line is the American equivalent of putting a carbon fiber rear wing on a '97 civic DX. I have little faith that this thing is going to be any more capable than a Wrangler, regardless of whether or not you can take the fenders off.

Jeep should do it too, what was it the Gladiator concept? I forget, but a small, inexpensive, basic pickup truck would have it's own hot market IMO. They all try to be giant 4 door family haulers now-- even the minivan lady on my street sold her Transport in lieu of a 4 door Dodge Ram. She's not taking any more bullsh*t, she's a truck driving mama now. Silliness.... pure silliness.

Apart from really cheap cars, what car doesn't come with disc brakes these days? I'm not being sarcastic (in this paragraph anyway), I'd genuinely like to know.
