i think its rad that so many people also have thoughts on the cruiser - i've written songs about it, sculpted miniature figurines, and even used it as the theme for a comedy sketch i wrote. it haunts me.

Bravo to American auto for making a car that found a market below 20K, even if it was all retro aesthetic and little engineering. My beef is solely with the demographic that seems to have embraced it and the manor in which they slowly tour our fine country. Few cars seem to truly sterotype a driver as well as the PT does. It's by no means just age specific, but the PT definately appeals to a specific demographic that's at odds with those focused on auto enginnering quality and the advancement of performance hoonage The article does touch on some of the factors that produced this phenomena, though heavy handed in it's thesis development. THis should be included as a footnote in all articles on the failure of the Aztec... if only they glued a retro shell on turd, it could have been a PT competitor.

I might have bought a PT, it's just the right size for what i use a truck for, running errands and hauling musical instruments, but my wife had such bad luck with Neons, head gaskets every 30,000 miles, i just stayed with the 80 Toyota truck. Had to put in a new engine last year, but 1,500.oo goes into 15 K how many times?

I'm not saying Civics are bad cars, they are just boring. Just like the Camry, Corolla, and all of the other jelly bean Japanese cars that take no chances on style.

Most people look at cars as appliances now. Japanese cars cater to these people. PT drivers want something different. What's wrong with choice? The car has been recommended over and over again by Consumer Reports.

All it comes down to is style and that is all subjective.

My seminal moment (revelation) came when I was almost t-boned in my PT, by an SUV that ran a red light. I realized that that I didn't want to die in a PT Cruiser. A small economical utilitarian vehicle with a look that really stands out from other vehicles in its class (until the HHR came along, that is). Usually when a division such as Chrysler with lux or near-lux aspirations tries to make an entry-level car, it fails because it's not different enough. The PT Cruiser fulfilled its job quite well, I think. It hung around without any major updates far too long, but a useful econobox starting around 15K that doesn't look like an econobox is a good thing. It's not a performance car, but it was never meant to be. I can understand people not liking the styling, but it's not bad by any means...some people don't like the retro thing, and that's fine. But most people for whom the styling isn't their bag wouldn't call it hideous at all.
