I've seen and sat in this car. This thing actually had more foot room in the back seats than the X5. This thing is incredible up close. Its like an off road luxury car. Lookin out the rear window isn't that bad. At the show, this was one of the most interesting vehicle's. Trust me, up close this thing is BAD!!!

Nice to see the Germans taking one for the home team. It's about time they had 10 to 20 years of fucking awful overpriced ugly ass cars. It will sell like the Cayenne for 2 - 3 years and then... I saw Legend too. Ford supplied the rides. Sure he could have had a different car every seen but what the hell. I liked the really clean Escape pulling up at the end. Nice to know inspite of plague and mutants theres still time to keep that Escape lookin pretty. Seriously a little more plot detail and not killing the main character would have made for a sequal. Still the shots of him driving the Shelby through New York were cool.

This is not an off-road car, so why jack up the center of gravity. It obviously doesn't have any more practicality to it than a BMW 3 or 5 series touring. I just don't get it...this is pandering to crowd that wants style and the false sense of superiority that comes with driving an SUV.

Of course, there are plenty of people slapping delicate chrome wheels on Range Rovers, so what do I know.

@ratieya: It looks like it has a very large boot and while it would be criminal to use something like this as a tow-car (much like the late-model 7 series I saw hauling a caravan this past summer), it would make a damn good one. 450lb/ft?

@LTDScott: It does have that look about it. I won't be surprised if we see a fibreglass-bodied, space-framed version hitting the Sahara in January.

I want to hate this thing, because it stands for people with more money than sense, off-road image but none of the ability, etc, etc. However, I can't help but like it. I think it looks really smart and it's different. At the end of the day you can't accuse it of looking like every other car on the road. Everyone has been grumping recently about how we need more variety.

I think the thing that makes my eyes hurt the most is that line connecting the upper front edge of the hood to the upper rear edge of the trunk. They seem to be getting more and more diagonally upward this decade, kinda like fins started getting taller and taller in the 50's...

Good god. I wonder what exactly was going on in the BMW product planning room the night they designed this thing.

I'd have to say they were on coke at the time, and not coke a cola.

The worst part about this car is, people are going to be paying 50-60 thousand dollars for this thing. Thats why the man driving in the X6 is far worse than the man in the Lada. The guy in the Lada needed cheep, transportation, one step up from a horse. The person who buys the xdrive6mobilethingey wants everyone to know how cool he is, but in fact, what he is really telling people is "Im a wanker and have no sence of style whatsoever!! and the zombie/vampire/whatevers won't judge you because you drive something that looks like the X6...

I think BMW makes great vehicles and I am sure the x6 will be a class leading product, but I REALLY hate crossovers. I despise them. Neither truck, nor car, nor wagon, nor minivan, they are instead the abomination of automobiledom . The automotive equivalent of a spork.

If you need to haul around some stuff, buy a wagon (call it an "estate" if it makes you feel better). Real car guys have a lot more respect for a sport package equipped 5 series wagon than a damn x5 (I know I sure do). Have gobs of kids, buy a proper minivan, they will be a lot more comfortable. Need to carry a lot of crap or haul a big load, get a real truck with a full frame.

Sorry, but these crossovers seem built for people who think they need better visibility but haven't glommed on to the fact that thanks to the baziilions of SUV's, trucks and other crossovers, you still can't see squat in heavy traffic. AND NO, a unibody crossover will not offer you the bulldozing crash resistance of a full-frame SUV, though it will provide you with nearly the same lousy rollover characteristics. So, to save us from these awkward, purposeless, tippy and generally goofy looking vehicles, just buy a damn car.

I like this. There's a whole lot of engine mechanical theory I don't know enough about to reference at the moment, but with increasing pressure (ha, get it) on European automakers to meet stricter C02 regs, BMW is right to explore ways to improve efficiency and power.

I think it's a great shame they just carried the dash straight over from the X5.

But, apart from the slightly fussy lower front, I think that's a damned fine looking car. I mean, the fact is that a huge off-road coupe is a totally unnecessary and slightly ridiculous concept, and maybe it's a bit too tall on the rear 3/4, and the whole plot is so ginormous that even those 19" wheels look tiny, but for an X5 Coupe, it's good stuff.

The only question I have is whether it is still worth selling the X5? From my BMW sales experience few people bought X5s for practical reasons, it was all about the image.

Now the "look at me" brigade are gonna buy this instead, and the residuals will drop on the X5 'cos there'll be loads of unwanted ones flooding the market.

I shall watch with interest.
