As a professional actor I think the choice to use a Mustang is not a good one. The writing in the new Night Rider will have to differ from the first Night Rider. The first night Rider was a Pontiac and not a Retro/Modern design. The writing will have to change in the scripts with regards to comments and dialog about the car itself. Whoever talks about the car they have to speek about it as it is. A retro/modern design Mustang. This will differ from the first Night Rider episodes. Obviously they wanted the new KITT to be modeled after the highest saleing American made car at the time. The Mustange. They probably where thinking that (everyone has baught the car so they will like a KITT like the one they baught). I think they should have used a Pontiac Car as well. Its like the movies "The Cronicles of Narnia" and "The Bridge to Tarabithia". They have the same basic story line but a little bit different writing. But they are different movies some what. 1980's Night rider, 2007 Night Rider. Different some what. Not the same show.

Does anyone else feel like they've been stabbed in the gut by having a POS mustang play a legendary firebird's role. They take an 80's icon and modernize it by having the lead stolen by its biggest arch enemy the ford mustang. What were these people smoking when they made that decision? They are sure to have lost many of the original fans in their quest for market value, by going against the grain on this casting decision. It would make just as much sense to re-create smokey and the bandit and use a f***ing mustang or remake gone and 60 seconds or Bullitt and use a Firebird or Camaro. Its insane especially to the car aficionados that watch such movies for the pure love of seeing their favorite ride on screen.

Well some people may have called the original rubbish when in fact it was a runaway hit but for a show of the 80's they did a good job on the story lines and even the movie sequels were done pretty well. The people that knock this old series and the new movie are to opinionated for me. I pay as much attention to their opinions as I do the rest of the critics. LOL
Even those people will watch out of curiosity and its O.K. if they don't like it. Not everyone will!
After all its just going to be a movie which adds to the original by telling the story of the original KITT creator, and brings in some fresh faces, although it will be interesting to see what and how big a part David Hasselhoff plays.
With the special effects being what they are today, the morphing of the car into different shapes through nano-technology should be pretty exciting to watch.

Yes, Ford supplies cars (and gains "free" publicity, which is a positive, despite people on here's views), but the studios decide how to trash it up. Seeing as this is just the "pursuit" KITT look, this tacky mess won't be in the whole movie anyways. This movie certainly won't be hurting GT500KR sales.

Further, Ford, or any major corporation, doesn't take a giant vote on how to handle PR/marketing. So your assumption that the design and release engineers, finance, design studio, etc, all are accurately represented by what you percieve to be poor PR would be assenine.

@rlj676: Yes, I do know the difference between the company and the studio. I also read both parties characterize this as a "partnership". And I know the PR dept at Ford went "Knight RIDER!?" and promptly crapped themselves. They then agreed that whatever hack junk the studio wanted to do they would support with money(cars).
Ford's PR is abysmal-they can't even decide what to name cars half the time. It doesn't seem like they're actually interested in selling cars at all. I take that as indicative of a company as a whole, as PR is their way of communicating with me, a possible customer.

@Fierock: The Firebird is pretty much a defunct car and they probably would've wanted something that was more recent than that last one. Let's not forget that the Firebirds of late were ugly as all hell.

It really looks like this show, which proves that Hollywood is truly out of new ideas, is going to be absolute rubbish. True the original was absolute rubbish, but it was so bad it was good as a comedy.
This is basically going to be a Ford advert since the press release says "NBC Also Forms Partnership with Ford Motor Company That Provides for Unique Content Opportunity". Given the financial mismanagement at NBC-Uni, a two hour Ford ad plus regular spots is a win-win for everyone except the viewer.

Utterly wrong.

Not just that there's something wrong with it not being GM...I mean, unless they need a back seat, there's the Vette...if they do there's the Camaro. Or hell, the G8.

No....what's wrong is that the light strip is above the grille. The Firebird didn't really have a grille to speak of, so the light strip really drew the eye.

With this, it's kind of like that photoshopped picture of the girl with four eyes. [www.coolopticalillusions.com]

They should just illuminate the whole grille.

From what I read, the new KITT is supposed to be a transformer as well. So, all the work they did on the CGI Mustang in the movie will benefit the series.
