Bring back yellow and cream and pink and orange black with orange and green and Chrome! Gotta love Chrome! why just two-tones, what wrong with three tones and 5 tone interiors!

More Color!!

BMW used to have fantastic colors available. Sure, not everybody would buy them, but I would!

Porsche has a fantastic 'any color you want' option that would only be better if they could do two-tone. I know almost nobody uses it, but that's okay. It's good that it's there for those of us who want to see something different.

ihateauditions

Yes, more color. I'm in love with the crazy lotus colors as well, we've got an orange and a yellow in town, and there's this cherry red lambo around too. And a girl down the street who drives an orange fiat as her daily driver.

Now, I seem to be stuck in the land of black honda civics with white pinstripes, but the project truck is a flaking away bright red (its second or third color, depending on the body panel) and we're debating whether or not to two-tone it and just how much chrome it needs.

cq

Yes, more colors! When I got my Mazdaspeed6 I had the choice of gray, silver, bright red, and black. Not wanting a cop magnet, and gray and silver being so...gray, I went with black. They had a nice black cherry color the previous year though. I am annoyed that manufacturers offer so many shades of gray (titanium, silver, carbon...) but no nice greens or blues or dark reds. Gray has become the 2000s equivalent of brown for the 1970s.

zedmanauk

In 1976 you could get 11 different colors of leather in a Cadillac Sedan de Ville, or 6 different colors of Magnan knit fabric, or 2 different plaids, or 2 different velours -- that's twenty-one different interiors in all.

My next car is going to be a 96-up E-class Benz, and it HAS to be black. I will take no other color.

Muscle-car era stuff goes for more money in the bright, eye-grabbing colors than they do in the plain stuff. There were TONS of triple green GTO's and beige Chevelles built in the 60's and early 70's, but you'd be hard-pressed to find many these days.

How many people order a new car these days anyway? I don't know of any, I'm betting that 99% or more of new car buyers are picking something off the lot. Lowest common denominator means lots of "champagne" colored boringmobiles.

squablow

I love that with the c30, for example, you can make a black car with like red trim and red interior -- a nice mix of elegant and spicy.

In general, I want cars offered with more colors and more color saturation. And I want two or more colors on the same car. And metallics should have larger flakes.

Personally, though, I want my cars not to draw attention. My Buick is eye-searing white, which is an acceptable compromise between my competing desires for brightness and stealth. The bright blue-green interior helps, too.

The bottom line—yes, I want more color, but I want other people to do it. It's NIMBY hypocrisy so I can't complain in good conscience.

I would, however, welcome the two-tones and other retro paint schemes on retro-based models. Looks like Dodge has the market cornered on these so far.
I'm a huge fan of the metallic sunburst orange commonly found on new Eclipses, which I've had many people tell me is hideous.

depends on the car really
I always thought BMW=Black personally and Lambo=Red
anyways both of my cars are silver but they both work for each car
Given some colors actually make the car look cheap
I saw an Audi Q7 in black and it looked like a Ford
but the next day there was one in a Creme white thats screamed luxury.

anyways I have had cars in a borad spectrum so to say of colors so you cant accuse me of being a silver fanatic:

1985 Buick Century Custom sedan - white w/red pinstriping (not a p&*!y magnet)
1986 Buick Century Limited station wagon - metallic sky blue
1993 Nissan Sentra XE - burgundy mist (looks red in some light and purple in others)
1995 Altima SE - Super Black
2000 Nissan Maxima GLE - silver
2001 Suzuki Swift GL- Silver

yellofury * * * * *

When I lived in Tucson, a contractor who lived a few houses over used to collect 'different' factory painted cars. He would wait a few years and buy them used. Usually at a great discount. Dodges, Fords, and even a British racing green 308 GTSomething Ferrari (who would do that to a Ferrari???? Original according to the spec sheet.) His last purchase was an Orange-ish Eclipse. He also used to live in a huge slumpblock home (4500+) Even some of the interior walls were made of the stuff....something about skimming a few pallets on/at every job site.

LandofID

I would also like a Triumph 2500TC to wear it.

I am utterly sick of silver cars, though. My Saab is a dark burgundy metallic. Quite a change around here from the usual silvers, graphites and blacks, and it makes the driveway more colourful.

Rust-MyEnemy is stll out there!

In Europe, you can get e.g. a VW Golf Comfortline in any of 38 exterior colors (shades of grey, red, blue, purple, green and yellow plus several levels of gloss). There are also 6 options for the interior materials, each in three colors (all shades of grey or brown).

Even for a model that sells in very high volume, that is quite a smorgasboard. Budget brand Skoda offers 12 exterior colors for its Octavia. Upmarket Audi offers 15 for its A4, plus an individualization option. It's worth asking if the inevitable manufacturing overheads in the factory paint shop are justified. The European car market is contracting, last not least because new cars are increasingly out of reach for middle-income families.

Btw: color choices are actually determined very early on in the genesis of a vehicle because they have such an impact on consumer acceptance. Most manufacturers are indeed limited to roughly half a dozen shades by the paint shops in their assembly lines. Consequently, they fret about their ability to anticipate consumer fashions in car colors and end up picking a few muted hues plus white and black. Bringing back gaudy 70s favorites like chocolate brown, orange, lime green or canary yellow is a major gamble.

rgseidl

The "staples" are always there... black, white, red, blue, gray/silver. It's like that with almost all consumer products, from MP3 players to guitars to automobiles.

There has actually been quite a lot of great colour happening lately. Beautiful "rootbeer metallic" and copper/orange on the Honda Element. The Camry and Escape hybrids coming in interesting shades of metallic green. Lots of copper/orange everywhere. Even Buick is doing a nice metallic brown on the Enclave.

But what it comes down to is buyer preference. People are conservative. And they want to keep the resale value high by sticking with colours with mass appeal. (This also applies to rental and lease fleets, which need to preserve high residual values.)

So i think the colours are out there... they're just not being ticked off on the option sheet as much, so we see parking lots that are a sea of shades of gray.

gotsmart

I've really enjoyed the black on warm tan two-tone interior of my current and last V-dub. Nothing outlandish or ritzy, but it doesn't look like an appliance, which can't be said for most cars on the road. I do take issue with the bi-polar selection of most exterior colors. If it isn't the shades of grey, silver, or champagne-beige, then you might get to choose "Pull-Me-Over" Red or the appalling Hard-Hat Yellows from more recent years. I've got nothing against red, what have you, but color doesn't have to sear the retinas. How about some rich tones in the middle ground of intensity for those of us who would rather pass on KitchenAid Vanilla and I'd-Rather-Die-In-Ball-of-Flames Red?

Cars need more color on the INSIDE. Look at new cars today, and for the most part, you have the choice between black, gray, and beige. Sometimes there's some very desaturated brown, and occasionally (BMW and Saturn, I'm looking at you here), there's nice rich browns, and some sporty cars have colored trim.
But, in general, the choices are black, gray, and dirty gray, and that's just entirely lame if you ask me. It's as if interior designers have forgotten that such things as color palettes exist and can be applied to plastics/fabrics/leather, and instead they're just told to use more (usually fake) metal trim or (often fake) wood trim if it's a car for old people.
How about something creative and attractive that could make the inside of a car seem like a nice place to be, and letting people have some interesting actual choices to match their personality and tastes?

sandwich_pants

Cars need more INTERIOR colours the way they did 15-20 years ago. Now all you can get is black, which often looks grim, cubicle grey, which is dismal and shows dirt, or beige, which gets filthy. Beige is a good colour for hiding dirt and hiding from the cops. Nothing is less visible than a beige four-door sedan.

SavageATL
