Great seeing REAL BMWs still running. How many of today's 635s do you think will be alive in 21 years?

@petersterncan: nah... in '88 the Quad-4 in the Grand Am only put out 150hp. Now, if we're talking about the 165hp 2.0 Turbo, then sure...

This is a very pretty car, especially considering the year it was produced. Personally, If I had one, I'd have to add some later model wheels and tuck the bumpers in about a foot.

When I was in college one of these would park in the parking lot, it was green, had some nice looking wheels on it and a big black chin spoiler. That was a hot looking car, I can still picture it clearly.

The E24s distract me so much that I'll turn my head all the way round to see one going in the other direction, wondering if it's an M6. I've almost rear ended quite a few cars doing that.

@Rust-MyEnemy: There's a wonderful song in the Sondheim musical "Assassins" in which Squeaky Fromme and John Hinckley proclaim that they are unworthy of the love of Charles Manson and Jodie Foster, respectively. Everytime I walk past my usually non-operational E12 to board the Metro Green Line, I sing a little bit of that song.

I must have been out to lunch in 1987, but I don't even remember the L6. I never thought BMW was making Luxury Packaged 6's and 7's. It would have been nice to see some shots of the interior, but other than that, this car is pure sex on wheels.

My friend's dad had an L7 (the 7 series sedan) in the late 80s/early 90s. It had more buttons than Cape Canaveral (sp?).

Neat. I had never even heard of the L6 before. Still, those 6-series, like everyone else has said, are great looking cars, and real BMWs.

I can't say when the last time I've even seen an E24 was, but this just made me think of the 8-series I see in town... in a neighborhood where you get stabbed for being white, no less. The oddly shaped BMW coupes are great.

@thesubstitute: I can see you winning the race if you had a Standard 125R on back. But given the weight of the STA, I'm compelled to call you a liar. In real life, as opposed to your fevered imagination, putting an STA on the bike rack of a Grand Am immediately caused it to wheelstand. This was the main reason Moeller sold so many PBRs.

A friend of mine had an L6 in highschool. He got it from a family friend for about $1000. It had a white leather interior. It was not fast. Not Fast.

The first time I beat him off the line in my 4-cyl 1988 Grand Am I think I broke his heart. It must have been all the extra weight from the extemely supple white leather headliner.

I came within a gnats dick of buying one immediately before I quit working for BMW. An old guy had an immaculate '89 635CSI Highline, 72k miles, in Platinum Grey. Not a mark on it. The guy was buying a new 650i off me, and since we had had a few drinks would sell me his 635 for £two grand.

But I didn't. Why? Because I didn't feel I deserved it. Because, with me in contol the car would have slowly dies. I would skimp on maintenance, it wouldn't live in a garage, I would accelerate hard rather too frequently. My friends would spill drinks on the seats. My girlfriend and I would soil the leather, obviously, I mean, this is a 635, right?

One day I will be man enough to own one. But not yet. I need to grow up first.
